Bug off!
I've been searching for a long time to find tea light candles that were citronella and finally found them at the Dollar General store of all places. I got 10 candles for a buck. SCORE! They are made by Old Williamsburgh Candle Corp. but I couldn't find a web site for them. I think Wallgreens carries their products too.

I've had better luck with the sticks/coils than with the candles. I've also heard that citronella can attract bears. I might be wrong with dat, tho. The only bad thing is that with the West Nile scare, the price went up alomst triple of what they used to be for sticks/coils. However, you really can't "set the mood" with coils/sticks.

"Love, by the glow of the burning mosquito repelling sticks...."

doesn't have that same moxie, ya know?

I find that where you camp is much more important than what kind of bug dope I have. I like being up on the ridges away from water for camping. Normally I can go with the minimal dope on and most times I can even run around camp with no shirt on. I have gotten more chewed up by the mozzies this year than any other year.

...but anoder good question here is what gets rid of those biting gnats? Geeezz! After i came home from N. Manitou Island two weekends ago, I was pillaged on my legs and arms. My wife freaked, thinking that the boy had'em too! I gladly let the little buggers get me instead of him, tho. I tried Repel (which had some DEET), but it didn't seem to work. This is the first time I can remember that I got chewed that bad.

We use Avon Skin-so-soft for gnats down here on the Gulf Coast. Men and women both.

Go to a school ball game and everyone in the stands smells like skin-so-soft. ;)

Just don't go hiking in the summer months - no need for repellent.

Plus it gets too hot! The heat bothers me more than the bugs.

I use skin so soft...black biting flies don't like it....and I take garlic pills......I carry deet....some times I have to use it for skeeters...but not often.......

DEET!!!
the only true preventitive. I put it on my food and eat it, this way, it permeates from the inside out.

Sweet smells attract bears. Citronella smells sweet. Ergo, ...

Citronella does not have any effect on mosquitoes that I've ever been able to see. Met a guy in Vermont once who smeared oil of citronella on his exposed skin and swore it kept the skeeters from biting. Of course, I went out and bought a vial of stuff, thinking my bug bite days were over.

All I accomplished for my trouble was keeping humans away. Sometimes not a bad idea, but not why I bought the stuff.

Now I use permethrin spray. It works. I have no idea what it does to the skin, but it works.

If you are in an area without bears, I would say go ahead with the citronella and keep the nasty buggies at bay.
