One of the local stations motto is, "Always live, local djs, local prize winners...obviousely NOT a Clear Channel station!". The local #1 station (it's all #2 in my mind though) is a CC station and they play the same shlt day after day after day. It's the same shlt from 25 years ago they were playing.”

Yeah, it's kind of hard to NOT make money when you're about the only show in town. It's like owning every gas station in town. They don't even need research. All they need to do is exist, make money and watch the bar get lower and lower.

I generally buy CDs and listen on the internet. NPR is about the only actual radio I listen to.”

“They didn't just all of a sudden become the "only" show in town. They started small and grew because people were listening to them. They're making money because people listen, and they grew because people listened.

“I got my Arbitron radio listening diaries today in the mail. It's really kind of cool to be able to do this survey. then again, I've always wanted to serve jury duty too. Wierd thing is my little gift? they stuck a dollar bill in my fiorst letter telling me my diaries were coming and then a dollar bill in each of the two diaries. Weird they'd be sending cash in the mail.”

“Well my week of tracking my radio listening for Arbitron is almost over and I was glad they have a space for general comments. I wrote, "The most important thing for me concerning radio listening is variety. I find the Clear Channel stations to be repetitive, boring and stale.". LOL! I was also glad to find that internet radio does count too so I was able to track my favorite internet stations too.”

“Really? I am pleasantly surprised about internet radio being included with that! That's very interesting! The last time I dealt with Arbitron, there was no internet radio or satellite radio, for that matter.

So, how long are they asking you to monitor this?”

“The funniest thing about the CC station here in Huntsville, is that they insist on doing traffic reports on I65, which is about 25 miles away from Huntsville.

Weather reports are a hoot too, since they go by whatever the NWS puts out, which can be inaccurate, because they use the report from the airport, which is 20 miles from downtown Huntsville. It's hilarious to be driving down the street on a sunny day, and hear them talk about light rain in Huntsville.”

“Ya know, they have the building with the transmitter and everything here, they could hire some local schmuck to do the traffic and weather. They rely on people calling in to a 1-877 number to get their traffic info, so the local teenagers have figured out that they have no way to verify the traffic report. So, occaisionally, some one will call in with a totally bogus accident, like a few months ago when they reported that a semi had overturned and spilled it's load at one of the busier intersections in town.”

“Traffic reports, news, weather and the like are extras that outlets will institute to give an appearance of community involvment to a segment of the listening audience and/or to reel in some of those that may tune to another outlet for this information. They figure that crappy coverage is better than none at all, in this case. So, without denting the budget too much, this is the net results sometimes...”

“I usually only listen to them in the morning, when they have "John Boy and Billy" on. In the afternoons, I switch to the local alt rock station. Except during commercials.”

“Roam, I've been following this very closely and yeah, I probably should do a segment using the music of The ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie,etc. Hell, I should find the tape of myy interview with Johnny and Joey Ramone and use a few bites from that, too. Good idea! Actually, I'm doing the show early tomorrow because of an open house that I am hosting for scout recruitment. So, I may not have time to plan it.
