There is a "Blaster" worm that has been exploiting and RPC worm in Windows NT, 2000, XP and Server 2003. Many users do not even now they've been infected. I would recommend going to Microsoft Windows Update site and make sure all critical patches and security updates for your system are applied.

It is a violin virus.

The only cure is to stop posting on trail talk or get violin banned from this site.

This error is caused by the software security system. Violin has included the worm script in his links.

welp, my 'puter won't boot all the way to windows. I have windows '98 second ed, all patched up, but not the latest sec updates, which was the reason I booted the thing up fer in the first place. a window ran briefly that said Reg Tib, then nothing, just my backround pic with no tool bar, no nothing.
Any help would be great and I'll buy ya a beer when I see ya.
Thanks!

Q, I'm not going to pick on you for running W98 but you need to update antivirus right away. W98 will be easy to clean up but get a free for personal use firewall right away (Zone Alam is good).

It is strange to see an RPC Windows Worm - I'm used to RPC vulnerbilities in Linux. Can't say I'm not unhappy at the message though.

Thanks for taking it easy! I unplugged the thing and plugged it back in again (power cable). Got scan disk, but didn't boot to win. I think I'll have to get my hands on a 98 start up disk and see what I can find. The thing worked just yesterday. Wondering if I might have what goin' round....

A week or so ago my computer wouldn't load windows 98. I flailed at it for a few hours then went to bed. Turned it on in the morning and it booted fine. Left it on for a few days, now it boots and loads Windows every time.

I've never had so many problems... and with 2 computers... u'd think with 2 computers one of them would work well enough to talk to someone... but no... wow, this one... the good one, though it's running me, it works quite well compared to my other, this one is having some stupid problems, causing errors and such, but it won't stop grr...

oh, and how am i supposed to update or fix my other computer when it shuts down every 5 minutes? huh? i'm really having problems with that one, help, somebody give me answers

IF it is the worm, Symantec has a removal tool. Microsoft also has a patch for the vulnerability.

Visit: Microsoft RPC patch downlad page and download the appropriate patch for your version of windows (Windows NT server, Windows 2000 XP and Server 2003 are all vulnerable)to a floppy disk.

Download:

OK...take a break from posting and I get rusty with my HTML.

We'll try it this way.

Go to Symantec's Security Response page and click the link for W32.Blaster.Worm. Scroll down the page and click the link to download the removal tool (beneath the note regarding the definitions that recognize the virus). Save this to a diskette.

Download the appropriate patch for your operatng system to close the vulnerability (XP, 2000, NT Server and Server 2003 are all affected) from Microsoft. Save this to a floppy disk.

Disconnect your computer from the Internet and any network (unplug the cable).

Run the Symantec tool from the floppy

Run the Microsoft Patch from the floppy

Reboot the computer

Re-run the Symantec tool (just to be sure)

Plug your computer back into any network or log back onto the internet.

If you have antivirus, update it. If you don't GET IT.

I've been hanging out over at grc.com. You should read, or at least skim, the story steve gibson has about a DDOS attack against his server by a 13 year old hacker. It's pretty technical in parts, and long (29 pages), but it should help you realize the importance of a good firewall, for those of you who don't have one. In case you don't read it, let me just say BlackIce is apparently a sucky firewall. Plus his site has all kinds of cool little utilities for the computer unsavvy such as myself.

Looks like from what I've found, I'm going to try booting in DOS and doing "scanreg/restore" and see if that works first. If not, buying some anti virus software, change the boot seq so it boots CD first and see if that clears it up, then just reformat the damn thing (which is is due fer any ways) if nothing else works. I'll loose everything, but again be reminded of how important it is to back everything up.....

Update:
I tried to restore the reg, didn't work. Cupp and I worked on it for about 4-5 hours last night. No errors on the hard drive, no virus. Tried to do a complete restore and had major problems. Could be mother board, amoung other things. This computer is on lone and I will not see any return for spending money on it, so we just went ahead and bought a new one. The goods:

There's things that are on here that we will not use. Video card is a little "light" and sound card is basic. We felt the money would be best spent on upgrading the Processor, RAM and getting a CD-RW. I liked the free upgrade on the hard drive and Flat panel screen.

Get a writable DVD burner, CD writers are going to be old school real soon. You can store more material on DVD and you are not losing functionality by getting the DVD compared to CD. FYI

VIRUS??
Okay, so I checked my email and there was this one email that had "*Urgent" in the subject line.

When I opened the email I received something like "if you're dumb enough to open this email...." now a worm will be installed on your computer...

something like it. I did not read it all, because I have no clue if a worm really can get on your computer without opening an attachement.

ahh, please tell me that's not possible. I had enough trouble with viruses!!
Gemini

There is a new worm out there that can enter you computer without opening it. It is my understanding that you did not even need to read the email, there is somekind of hole in Microsoft progaming that allows anyone in if they know your address.

Now that I scared you, I think it is a hoax. Like I said, that particular worm does not even require you to open the email or there does not even need to be a email. If it can find your IP address, it can get into your system. All the other current worms and virus, require you to open them.

I would suggest two things. Update you virus protection softeware, run it and see what comes up. Two, secure all personal information. If you have your social security number, bank account number etc on your computer, make sure it requires a pass word before you can access it. Identity theft is the real scarry thing.

Oh, and of coursce back up, back up, back up your hard drives regularly.

thanks. I always update my virus program (can't afford not too)
Tried to run it after this email but it froze. which worries me a little...

anyway, I am running the virus right now.

Hope it was a hoax, yeah it scarred me :) I always get emails with "urgent" in the subject line. I have to open them. Darn!!

Outlook Express
I have tried twice to forward some messages, which contain attachments, if that matters. And another new message with the same attachment (a trail map).

It is partially sent then I get an ERROR message, and it appears none of the messages were sent.

Also, there is no error ID code. Am using Outlook Express on Windows XP.

This is not, not, NOT good! Help!!

Scan your attachments and make sure they don't have viruses.

Zip them into .zip files and send them that way, if you can.

If you were on ME, I'd say it was asking you to reboot. You might try that anyway.

Hey, bloody, I FIXED IT!! woohooo!

Went to Microsoft newsgroups for OE. Looked for similar problems and did what it said:

Follow the instructions below to create a new Sent Items folder. If the problem persists, do the same for the Outbox.

Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the
folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start>Run>Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WindowsXP & 2K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Sent Items.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created
automatically when you open OE.

Do not archive mail on default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often.

File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar).
File>Folder>Compact all folders.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background
and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.
