This is new to me
I ran across this page which shows a bunch of people taking "Garbage Bag Baths."

I looks like you fill a black garbage bag with some water and let it warm up in the sun for a while. Then you climb in and bath yourself.

Anyone know more about this method? It's new to me.

I've heard of it before but always wondered if soap was involved and if the runoff is considered?

I have a spare nalgene cap that I drilled 7 equally spaced 1/32 diameter holes. I place my three quart collapsable naglene container full of water on one of my black bags in the full sun, and after two or three hours, the water warms up to regular shower temperature. I then switch the standard cap with the one with the holes drilled in it, and I get a shower for use in the wilderness that last about two minutes.

Hey prosecutor! I did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Except I don't have a 1/32 bit so I used a 1/16. I used the top to a plastic 2L soda bottle and it fits nicely on my platy bag. I held it over the sink the it took over 3.5 minutes to empty (2L bag). That's a nice long shower!

Problem is that the handle and the opening are on the same end so I haven't figured out a way to hang it. Might need someone to hold it for me.

----

I did read about the garbage bag baths. I've suggested it to people before... but never actually done it myself. Seems like it would be difficult to hold the bag up around you if you want to use your hands to clean up.

I will pass on the bag. It looks like way to much trouble for what is you get out of it. Interesting idea and it seems to work, but they don't make bags big enough for me to sit in.

Where's that anti-bagite bacpac at? I do the dilled cap thing too and just stand on my Cow Patty Placemat to shower.

They guys might have gone for garbage bag baths on our HST trip but I think they would draw the line at yoga and hair braiding.

Kinda adds a broader meaning to the proverbial 'bag night'...

I just take my collapsable water container and use it. The nozzle, turned about halfway, puts out a reasonable spray. Nothing extra to carry. Works fine. Used in the right spot, there is no runoff to worry about. It just percs into the ground.

WTF?? Bath? Shower?

And just how do you people expect to run the crowd off at the Pizza Hut buffet if you are nice and clean??????

Nothing like "trail aroma" to make people get out of your way.

I know, this obsession with cleanliness on the trail. It's just not healthy.

I'm with chili... There's no reason you should need a bath/shower on any length of trip, once you get to a certain point you can't get any dirtier... then you get used to the smell - and if everyone smells u don't notice anyone else, longest i've gone without a shower on the trail is probably 40 days, no problems.

simer, the dang problem is all these neatnics that do take a bath! They don't stink and can smell us! ;)

Oh TT ladies! Just to be helpfull, I'll hold the water bottle shower for you anytime you want to shower and scrub those hard to get at places too! LOL

part of the reason to want to bath/shower (i'm talking w/out soap, anyway) is cause I have long hair that is difficult to brush and the last thing I want is to come home after two weeks of hiking and have dreadlocks. the more oils in the hair, the more likely it is to dread (so i'm told). so, getting my hair wet, occasionally, is the only way to attempt to remove the knots.

the truth is, i've never actually showered on the trail. but, on a longer trip, i will absolutely "shower" if a lake or river isn't available for a swim.

mtnsteve - yes... swimming is ALWAYS the preferred method.

Well, it's obvious that garbage bag baths would not be a popular TT activity. LOL.

That's OK, I can't braid my hair anyway.

I'm really curious about how one would take a bat in a garbage bag. It seems like you'd need to have some sort of frame to keep the thing stable while you were in it...

All things considered, it sounds like a pretty dumb idea, sorry to say.

You don't actually step inside the garbage bag. You fill it with water and soak your head in it.

No shower/garbage bath needed!
I remember a trip in Rawah Wilderness. Three of us were out for a week. We stopped at a restaurant on the way out, before showers and the waitress took our order a few feet from the table.

We just laughed.

Come to think of it, I want to say that when she had to serve our food there was a clothes pin on her nose! :-)

j/k

Just thought of something....
is the cost of food in the first diner outside a trailhead higher than the ones further down the road?

Hmmm, if yes, why! Is this a service fee for 'the smell factor?'

I didn't think you were folically impaired.

I looked through the entire gallery and the thing that struck me was the "ton" of gear they were packing.

A five gallon cook pot? WTF?

Years ago, when we came out of the Palisades after 2 weeks, we stopped a Local Denny's or something like that, the waitress smiled politely and said "climbers/back[packers?", we said yes and she took us to a booth WAY in the back and proceeded to recommend the bacon burger and fries along with the appetizer plate and milk shakes.....they get a lot of our types in there.

Lyra...I was responding to the line about being "too cute" after Mutt's lesbian remark....a thousand apology's if I was mistaken.
