Many olcal colleges, particularly community colleges will have photo classes whcih are open to the public for little if any cost. I would suggest you take advantage of the opportunity to learn from some pros. But please be aware, the "gear" for photography is almost as expensive as the gear for backpacking and the gear mentality is every bit as addictive. The up side is just like here, people have stuff in the closet they will never use again and are often happy to let it go to someone interested in learning.

i hear ya RR, i wish i could, but i just don't have the time to take any kind of class right now.

i'm considering joining one of those online group/forums where everyone shares, comments, gives advice.

sacco...I just recently got a remote for my camera but I used the timer just as much as the remote.

Do join a forum...I've learned a lot that way..or see if there is a group that is in your area that meets monthly. I'm thankful my church supports the arts and I am the member of the photography team there..I have learned so much from the 'pros'.

You can always just set the 10 second timer instead of using the cable release. Works just as well, a bit slower, but that makes you think about what you are doing a bit more.

i know about the timer trick, but i'd like a release to do bulb shots.

maybe a remote will work.

off to google...

looks like i'm gonna have to bite the bullet and spend the 60 bucks on the 50 cent cable unless i can find one on ebay.
