Minneapolis is considering opening public restrooms to both sexes

Public bathrooms in the city of Minneapolis may be open to all sexes if a city councilman has his way. That is, as long as you're just there to do your business and leave.

For years, women have complained about places like the Metrodome, because there are always long lines at the women's bathroom and no line at the men's. So often, women would use the men's bathroom. This new proposal would make that legal, but it would also make it legal for men to use the women's bathroom.

Just ask City Councilman Scott Benson. He says he simply wants to clarify the current law.

"If you happen to stumble into a women's restroom, I don't think we're going to arrest you. But to take the city attorney's interpretation of that we should be arresting you for that."

Benson believes the city law only applies if go you in the opposite sex bathroom for an indecent, immoral or illegal reason.

“Despite the media's interest in this, I don't think it's a major issue.”

If you ask Tom Prichard from the Minnesota Family Council it's a major issue. Because he believes it's all a part of a larger issue, of redefining family and sexual issues.

"And so this issue, of who can enter men's and women's bathrooms is really tied into gay rights and gay marriage even.”

In fact, Councilman Benson introduced this new legislation to help transgender people, who self-identify as the opposite sex.

The opposite sex bathroom issue will go to a public hearing on Wednesday.
