Winterfest 2004

“In the early planning stages...

"Ladyhiker03...the Tipi is usually the main cook, party and conversation tent. If the weather isn't real bad, most good 3 season tents will work fine. I usually pitch the Kiva and a Megamid as back up tents.

jvz and Free...Don't worry about experience, there should be plenty of folks who will show you the ropes, it's just like summer packing, except its way different......actually, for those who want to get into winter camping this would be a great experience. Many of the folks that were newbies on our first New Years trip are now hard core winter types. Between myself and some of my buds, we may be able to supply some tents, snowshoes and perhaps skis for a couple of you.

I haven't had a chance to talk to Rodney or the girls yet, but depending on when everyone can make it, we might set up camp just before New Years and stay for a week or more, perhaps until the 9th.

The dates are still flexible, we need to decide on where everyone would like to go (Shasta, Lassen or ?) and we still need to see just how many folks we can get to join in. I feel a party coming on...."

“The only requirement I have for the Tipi is everyone has to help gather a little firewood for the stove.

The ritual for the newbies is really very simple and virtually painless, the marks go away after a few days....not to worry.

I am talking with a friend about setting up something for a sweat, we have discussed this in the past, I have to check on the logistics.

We still need a vote on where everyone wants to go, I'm flexible, either Shasta or Lassen works. Right now I think we have one vote for Lassen.”

Pathman... You have some great areas for a "Palooza" in your neck of the woods... You put together a great hike a few years ago that coincided with the balloon festival..... Just a thought...”

“The idea started out with a "Out my backyard" hike on another board. (No, not that board!)Also did Wheeler Peak in that Wilderness to Commemerate 9/11 by hiking last year with Toejam and Stumped. Haven't heard from either lately. I'm not sure I want to do a "Palooza". 5 seemed like plenty on last year's trip. The choices are great though-Pecos Wilderness, Aldo Leopold, Gila Wilderness. Phaedrus knows this area too, as you probably know. My biggest problem will be the next few month are short on time off as I am changing jobs. The Winterfest is possible because we get 4-5 days at Christmas. Things will also get easier for me as we have a wild 17 year old in the house that requires somebody be in town. He'll probably move out next summer and we will only have our 8 year old. yippeeee. He's shown some interest in getting out.”
