Oriole Trail East: Hoosier National Forest
I did a Sunday morning dayhike on the Oriole Trail East in Perry County. The trail is a multi-use trail for horses, bikes and hikers.

I hit the trailhead around 7:30 a.m. and seemed to be the only one there. I saw three equestrians later in the morning on my way out of the woods.

The top half of the 7.7 mile trail is graveled for the horses and the bikes, but the back half is mostly dirt trail. Some wet areas were a little rutted by horses, but not bad.

The trail is fairly flat, running across a series of ridgelines above the Ohio River. The back stretch of the loop runs along a ridge about 650-750 feet directly above the river, but there was no good view of the river because of the foilage. I'd like to try the trail again in the winter to see if there's a better view.

Nice open hardwood forest with some stands of pine. Nothing spectacular, but a nice dayhike. It would also be a great trail for mountain biking. I may go back and check it out with the bike sometime.

Wildlife watch: Blue heron, box turtle (+ two dead ones), lots of spiders and biting flies, deer, various birds, a field mouse and a blacksnake.

I was off the trail by 10:30 a.m. and it was getting hot!!
