“Do the critters come out? Or just the stars... Scary or cool? Petzel Tikka on or off? LOL Anybody prefer to hike by moonlight??” 9:28:20 PM 8/19/03 “I like it! 8)” 9:29:30 PM 8/19/03 “Both come out if you are quiet. Cool. Depends on the tree cover and the phase of the moon. Prefer it? I dunno but I won't pass up a chance to do it.” 9:30:17 PM 8/19/03 “i coulda done it last weekend. cept for bigfoot lurking in the dark shadows there was nothing stopping me.....” 9:31:05 PM 8/19/03 “I think it is so cool if you leave the lights off and be quite and take in the deep sounds of the night and try to figure out with each sound is now that is pimp! 8)” 9:31:54 PM 8/19/03 “I love it. I like XC skiing by moonlight even better! I like skiing under a moonless ski with the aurora the best. I use my headlamp only for emergency or detail work. When skiing or hiking it's better to go without when you can, you see more. With a lamp, you only see what is in the light and nothing else.” 9:39:53 PM 8/19/03 “It's great! I prefer to bring a tall, dark and handsome man... Rockman, are you available?? ;o) I like to snowshoe on a clear winter night best! It's hard to find full moon days with little cloud coverage. It's hit or miss but those are the best.” 9:40:02 PM 8/19/03 “yeah..and then sasquatch jumps out and sucks your brains out through your nostrals.....then whatchu gonna do?” 9:40:34 PM 8/19/03 “Biz there was an article in Backpacker Magazine this month about a man who only hikes in the dark..doesn't use a light..eyes have adjusted...How bout that? I love night hiking myself..really SPOOKY and MYSTERIOUS... I LIKE IT !!! :~ )” 9:40:51 PM 8/19/03 “biz lives!!! yeah!!!” 11:21:58 PM 8/19/03 “and liz bivs?” 11:56:30 PM 8/19/03 “Don't stump your tootsies!” 12:06:22 AM 8/20/03 “Ya talking to stumprider there, Tilt? And hey, youse was a cute little kid!! (yeah, probably a shot of some NEIGHBOR kid!)” 12:38:13 AM 8/20/03 “Yeah... that's my stunt double, <G>” 1:20:50 AM 8/20/03 I'm an ALPS Mountaineering Pro Gear Tester “I'm an ALPS Mountaineering Pro Gear Tester. I've found that the animals at night like to come up to me and take my gear. I do not know why. It is very strange. Just the other night I was sitting in my living room, watching American Idol reruns and eating microwave pork skins and drinking sugar-free Kool-Aide (I have diabete's), when all of a sudden I noticed an opossum outside gnawing on the full polyester rainfly of my ALPS Mountaineering Taurus 2 tentshelter, which is oddly enough manufactured in the same country in which REI manufacures their HALF DOME PLUS TWOS. I just got a Crescent pack from ALPS Mountaineering ALPS Mountaineering due to me bing a PRO GEAR TESTAR, and the opossum was trying to bite off and run away with a D-ring on one of the shoulder straps. Fortunately for my pack, I kicked the hell out of that possum and threw him in my freezer. As I write this he's still knocking around a little bit, but I know that by tomorrow he's just more faux beef in the freeze. I can't wait to try my ALPS Mountaineering Crescent pack and to perceive nature@ I love uyo” 1:37:30 AM 8/20/03 “I love hiking by moonlight, but I hike in the winter or cooler weather. I like it much better with snow on the ground & a full moon. If I take anybody with me (& I've introduced many to midnight hikes) I'll take a pistol with me(at their request) so they can relax. Never needed it.” 4:40:43 AM 8/20/03 The (almost) Annual Birthday Hike “I went on a few moonlight hikes with a friend of mine to help celebrate his birthday. On one, we hiked up an 11,000' pass from our camp and waited for the full moon to rise before having a couple beers and hiking (falling) back down. The moon was so bright, we could see the shadow of the mountain we were sitting on across the canyon. We had headlamps but didn't use them. It was cool.” 8:27:07 AM 8/20/03 “I'm with CH on that one. Last November, we hiked out on the Bald Rocks trip with a full moon and snow on the ground. Like Aero, we had headlamps too, but only flashed them once or twice to double check a trail marker or two. The reflection off the snow was so cool! If it weren't for my intensely aching heel, it would have been perfect...” 8:34:49 AM 8/20/03 “It makes sense that the snow helps. The other thing people do, which sounds like great fun, is hike above treeline by moonlight. People plan such hikes to coincide with a full, or nearly full, moon.” 8:54:34 AM 8/20/03 “Well there, maybe she likes to stump her tootsies!” 12:04:38 PM 8/20/03 “I like hiking in the daylight and sleeping at night.” 12:44:54 PM 8/20/03 “My midnight hikes started because I always wanted to camp on top of the Catskill peaks which you can only do in winter. I hiked into the night because I knew that I could stop anywhere & set up camp. When I got to the peaks, the temp had dropped & wind picked up, so I kept going. Stopped just before I got to my jeep & set up camp. I could have driven home but it was perfect (out of the wind). That's when I realized that I didn't need a heavy pack. I started hiking EVERYWHERE with a daypack, yet I always have gear in my vehicles.” 6:12:07 AM 8/22/03 “"yeah..and then sasquatch jumps out and sucks your brains out through your nostrals.....then whatchu gonna do?" stratdewd 09:40:34 PM 08/19/03 LMMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” 6:24:24 AM 8/22/03 “We hiked into and out of Havasu Falls by full moon during June because it was tooooo hot during the day to hike. Amazing how quickly your eyes adjust and have no need for the headlamps! I loved it!” 4:21:10 PM 8/23/03 “I carry a gun for my job so I occasionally carry one while hiking. I've seen a bunch of critters but am only bothered by ones in heavy traffic area's where they have been fed by city folk. I don't bother them & in 35 years of hiking none have bothered me. I usually back away from all critters both four legged & two. If either poses too much of a threat, they're done. I have to qualify every year & shoot a perfect score.” 4:36:42 PM 8/23/03
