Take it all back, REI takes stuff back for any reason.

Wait for it to go on sale, and get it then. You don't have to have it now.

Build some spending discipline while you're young.

Jeez I sound like bacpac.

Seriously, Free, We can get you soooo much good stuff for five bills.

BBinkly has some good deals on his site and Campmor and sierratradingpost.com are all at your service.

$500.00 would outfit a roving band of TTer's for a 6 months!

Plus, as much as love REI, you paid sales tax on all that. Shipping is usually less than tax, in my experience, when it comes to lightweight hiking gear.

I'm the ultimate cheapskate...

Ditto to what Phaedrus said. $500 will A LOT MORE GEAR THAN THAT, if you spend it at the right places on the right things. REI is full price, never pay full price. Especially for gear.

And sure, I can understand needing a piece of gear. But did you have to have it today? Or could you wait a couple of weeks and get something similar for less?

Learn to fight impulse buying now before it's too late.

Take back everything but the pants.

You intended to only buy stuff on sale and you should have stuck to it.

Decide now that you don't want to spend your life groaning under the burden of credit card debt.

All the backpacking gear I own cost less than $500. Hell, in fact, I would say in 21 years of backpacking, I haven't spent much more than that on gear (boots excluded).

right...what the others said...
hey wait a sec...I buy gear all the time...but I never pay full price...that roadster is ok, but there are lighter better tents that cost less...but it is a cool tent...take everything back but the tent...buy frog toggs for rain gear, take the footprint back, and go get a peice of 2 mm plastic, or buy tyvek, or slice a large garbage bag to fit.

Hi Free24, I'm Debbieb and just starting posting yesterday. I did want to say congrats. to you on your new gear. I am going to the REI in Brentwood myself tomorrow to see what I can pick up during the sale. But one thing is for sure, buying gear is an addiction. Maybe there should be some kind of gear buying support group or something. (Don't tell BBinkley I'm going to REI) LOL Enjoy

Come on, buying gear is fun. I admit buying it on sale is even better, but it's not always on sale, at least not the stuff YOU want or need that day!! I am never lucky!

Yeah, maybe a real gear buying class would be in order for some of us. I would attend. Maybe something we could add to T3?? (just a thought)
