For a songwriter/musician, I would probably have to include Warren Zevon as well.

My personal fav pf all time is Fran Zappa. And he goes down in the multi category of writer/musician/arranger/conductor/producer. I also have to reiterate some of the previously posted: Pete Townsend, Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, Roger Waters, Paul Simon, Springsteen and i don't think anyone mentioned Jagger/Richards. They wrote a good song or two through the years...

Damn! That does look stupid, doesn't it. Well, you remember the cover of 'We're Only In It For The Money'? The mothers dress in women's clothes. Maybe that's Fran, the alter ego, there...

Steve Winwood:
As a teenager he sang and played "soul organ" for the Spencer Davis Group(anyone remember, "I'm A Man" or "Gimme Some Lovin'")
In '67 he started Traffic.
For about a year in '69 Winwood recorded with Blind Faith(Clapton/Baker/Gretch/Winwood)
After that there was more Traffic.
In '68 Winwood played on Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland album on the track "Voodoo Chile"(not to be confused with "Voodoo Child, Slight Return). Winwood on organ, Jimi guitar, Jack Cassidy on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums.

Bass Players?
Jack Cassidy/Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna(with Jorma Kaukonen)
Jorma and Jack went to Bethesda Chevy Chase high school just outside of D.C........you, lyra!

Jack Bruce/Cream and so much more.
Jack Bruce is a jazzman and great singer.
He teamed up with Pete Brown to write the best of Cream's songs.

Teebeard says, you are right about a few things, TT. Steve Winwood, aside from being 'child genius', is one of the most talented singer/songwriter/musicians in the biz. And Jack Bruce is tops on the bass...

Yawn-ee never got a mention.

METALLICA!!!
OMG!!! you must be joking...second rate hasbeens...hacks for muscians...they should relagated to the used record bins...

Those guys were a joke then and still are now...

you can't even put them in the league with the likes of Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, Eric Clapton, Alan White, Bill Bruford, Bill Wyman, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman...Metallica...they SUCK!!!

Lets not forget Al DiMeola, Jan Luc Ponty, Paco DeLuca. Take pearl jam, metallica, acdc and all the rest of those musical morons and dump em all into a pile of leftover Smegma...cripes...

nobody mentioned Rennaisance, Loreena McKennett, Shadowfax, Focus, the Winter Brothers, The Alman Brothers...these are MUSCIANS!!! not idiots that picked up instruments and banged a gong. Oh yeah...Roy Buchannan, John McGlaughlin, Alice Coltrane...comon folks...get real. there is a difference between muscians and bands...how bout Roy Clark...one of the finest american guitar player, and Davey Johnston (Elton John's guitar player) Carlos Alomar (david Bowie's guitar player) Denny Diaz (steeley dan)...I"M TALKIN MUSCIANS HERE, not just popular mass music. Take a listen to "Can't Buy a Trill", or Trick of the Tale or Close to the Edge, or Works vol. 1 & 2

this is music...not some crap head bangin music...

not that Im opinionated or anything like that, but...well never mind...you drink Gallo, I'll drink Mouton.

stickmon, please don't lump Pearl jam into the pile with Metallica!

Let's face it there's alot of great bands, musicians, and songwriters. That being said, very few have changed the industry or defined a generation.
The Beatles - changed everything.
Elvis - brought R&B to the massses.
Hendrix - changed the way an instrument was played and made guitar a mainstay in ROCK_ROLL.
the Doors - brought poetry and theatrics.
Black Sabbath - brought a new style of music - metal
Allman Brothers - brought Southern Rock
Run DMC - brought a whole new style of music to the masses - RAP.
Nirvana - changed alot whether you like them or not. They forced radio to play music they didn't want to. They were unstoppable because of the grass roots fans and changed pop music forever. They would have never existed without the Beatles.
And i believe Pearl Jam defined the 90's. Eddie Vedder has a unique voice that is instantly recognizable and is a great songwriter. And if you ever seen 50,000 people singing "Alive", you'd know what I'm talking about.

Stikmon
I realize that you are not a Metal fan but I ask you nicely to refrain from using the work "suck".
I don't care for most of the bands & musicians you mentioned but I would not say "suck".

Your a good friend so I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you over this. Just please don't disrespect. other peoples taste in music.

BTW, Metallica IS one of my all time favorite bands and always will be.

I suppose nobody could REALLY say who the 5 greatest are, so I'll list some of my favorites:

Johnny Cash - Should've got video of the year over Justin Timberlake.

Beck - Singer / songwriter / performer

George Clinton - Make my funk the P-Funk, I wants to get funked up

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Was just reaching a new level when he passed.

Chet Atkins - Arguably the best guitarist ever.

Les Paul - I had to include him because he's kinfolk.

Neal Young - Incredible discography.

Willie Nelson - A voice as smooth as malasis.

The Grateful Dead - Blues, Country, Pop Rock, Folk and Jam band.

Doc Watson / Ralph Stanley - Legends

David "Dawg" Grisman - Plays so smoothly that butter melts.

Sly Stone - It's a family affair.

I forgot about
Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

Rico Rodriquez - One of the first Ska musicians.

Herb Albert & the Tijuana Brass

Willie Dixon - One of the great bluesmen.

Taj Mahal - Acoustic, Electric, folk, blues, Island, multiple instruments.

Song to Woody

I'm out here a thousand miles from my home,
Walkin' a road other men have gone down.
I'm seein' your world of people and things,
Your paupers and peasants and princes and kings.

Hey, hey Woody Guthrie, I wrote you a song
'Bout a funny ol' world that's a-comin' along.
Seems sick an' it's hungry, it's tired an' it's torn,
It looks like it's a-dyin' an' it's hardly been born.

Hey, Woody Guthrie, but I know that you know
All the things that I'm a-sayin' an' a-many times more.
I'm a-singin' you the song, but I can't sing enough,
'Cause there's not many men that done the things that you've done.

Here's to Cisco an' Sonny an' Leadbelly too,
An' to all the good people that traveled with you.
Here's to the hearts and the hands of the men
That come with the dust and are gone with the wind.

I'm a-leaving' tomorrow, but I could leave today,
Somewhere down the road someday.
The very last thing that I'd want to do
Is to say I've been hittin' some hard travelin' too.
