No, I've always been a big fan of his. I even wrote him a letter for a HS engrish project about 16 years ago. Not too common to meet another. And I didn't use my sarcastic font.

I couldn't limit it to 5
I'll probably take some heat for this but here goes...

In no exact order... except for the first two:

1) Bob Marley - my Rasta Brother
2) John Lennon - for speakin his mind you gotta have him in there
3) Pete Townsend (the Who) - inventors of the "rock opera" no list is complete without them
4) Page/Plant (LedZepplin) Remember "Stairway to heaven"???
5) Joe Strummer (the CLASH) my tribute to punk, but they were more than that - they made a political statement & rockin music!
6) Crissie Hynde - the Pretenders I love tough chick singers
7) Janis Joplin - ditto for Janis... you gotta have a screamin beeeeach like her on this list

Some very notables:
Ray Davies (the Kinks) Davies was a great songwriter who had a knack for catchy melodies and quirky lyrics.
Jimi Hendrix - 20 years ahead of his time
Jim Morrison - every guy wanted to be him
Rolling Stones - you can't argue with success
Bono (U2) - as you can probably tell from my list, I like songs with a political message
Johnny Cash - yeah , for his life experiences & Cool factor
Frank Sinatra - yeah... I'm serious!

John Lee Hooker - cool, but not as influential as the others

Jim Croce - Pleeeeease... come on... how'd he make this list?

BackSlacker... another that won't make the list but can kick (or shoot) your ass would be Ted Nugent!

OK, seriously though:

Paul McCartney
John Lennon
Bono
Pete Townsend
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

I still think that Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most amazing albums ever.

Ironically enough, not a single one of the above-mentioned is American...

Ahh, JLH. Who could forget classics such as, "Big Legs, Tight Skirt," "Boogie Chillin'," or "Mama, You Got A Daughter"

Anyone have JLH, "The Healer" It has him with other notables such as Santana, Bonnie Rait, Roberty Cray, and Charlie Musselwhite. Good stuff.

The Healer is what turned me on to JLH. I was in High School when it came out and was blown away.

I don't think McCartney deserves more credit than George Harrison as a song writer. In fact I never liked McCartney as a musician.

George Harrison wasn't known as a song writer until the Beatles broke up. Even though he wrote quite a few hits for the Beatles.

Not really, it's a big world with lots of options. We're bound to disagree at some point. Lennon was prolly my favorite of the bunch.

McCartney is a brilliant musician. The guy smokes on guitar, bass and piano and can even play a trumpet. I think McCartney (as does Lennon) ranks up there with Beethoveen and Motzart.

dayhiker, he did indeed write Cocaine. He also wrote After Midnight, Call me the Breeze.

ENS, McCartney doesn't even come close to Lennon as a song writer. IMO Harrison was a better song writer than McCartney
