MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Reuters) - The Alabama chief justice who defied a U.S. court order to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments this week was suspended on Friday by a state panel that monitors judicial ethics.
Alabama's Judicial Inquiry Commission said it filed a complaint against Roy Moore, who has been fighting to keep the two-ton granite monument on display since he installed it in the state judicial building two years ago. The monument remains in the building's rotunda, and Moore's supporters have vowed to risk arrest to prevent it from being moved.
Moore, who was suspended with pay, will be tried before a judicial court. If found guilty, he could face sanctions that include removal from office.
"The chief justice left (the panel) no choice," said Richard Cohen, general counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the civil liberties groups that sued Moore.
This week, the center filed charges with the commission stating that Moore's refusal to comply with the Wednesday deadline to remove the display violated judicial ethics.
"This is not just Justice Moore against the federal courts," Cohen said. "This is Justice Moore against everyone."”

MY only question that i want answered is.....WHO PAYED FOR THE MONUMENT? Taxpayer dollars....Moore....a gift from an outside party...why haven't the reporters jumped all over that question..because 10 bucks says WE payed for it..and if that's the case...specially with all the budget and revenues crisis's in our state...Moore will be rode out on a rail, and never see public office again.

But the fact that it is there means that other faiths have a strong case in having a monument of their own installed. To erect a Christian monument in a goverment facility and then refuse other faiths the same accomodation would in effect be state sponsorship/approval/recognition of a religion.

Do we really want our goverment buildings to become showplaces for every faith that yells for recognition? I'd rather they concentrate on being a government.”

He was told to take it down and turned the publicity into a run for the State Supreme Court. No joke, he had this grantite version installed in the middle of the night. If you have to do something at 2 am so that no one sees you, then you, yourself KNOW that what you're doing isn't right. This guy is so lame.”

I'm not an expert on the Alabama costitution but I found they actually have six of them.

The first and second had this phrase: "No person within this state shall, upon, any pretence, be deprived of the inestimable privilege of worshipping God in the manner most agreeable to his own conscience; nor be compelled to attend any place of worship, nor shall any one ever be obliged to pay any tythes, taxes, or other rate, for the building or repairing any place of worship, or for the maintenance of any minister or ministry."

It was modified slightly in each sucessive constitution and reads in the 1901 (newest) costitution as "That no religion shall be established by law; that no preference shall be given by law to any religious sect, society, denomination, or mode of worship; that no one shall be compelled by law to attend any place of worship; nor to pay any tithes, taxes, or other rate for building or repairing any place of worship, or for maintaining any minister or ministry; that no religious test shall be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under this state; and that the civil rights, privileges, and capacities of any citizen shall not be in any manner affected by his religious principles."

“What OPIE is referring too is that the Bama constitution is the longest in the country. It was written in about 1903 specifically to funnel power through a central area. The intent really was to keep blacks down. When a county half way across the state wants to change something, the whole state has to vote on it. Pretty stupid.

I think OPIE means that the letter of the law and the spirit of the law are NOT one in the same.”

this is a 5,000 lb. monument that Moore had placed in the courthouse in the middle of the night. he didn't even have the balls to place this monument when the building was open.
