Up and down, up and down....couldn't get enough. I had some of my best over 30,000' vertical days there.” 1:02:10 PM 11/14/03 “So you guys prefer the touristy towns over the "real" Western towns? I know, they can definitely be fun... never been to Jackson Hole, but have liked *aaaaaaack* (it kills me to say this) ASPEN, Vail, Winter Park, Breckinridge. BUT a friend and I had just as much fun with Roger at what I think was the Mangy (sp?) Moose tavern in Riverside/Encampment, WY. The boonies of south central Wyoming. A partron, Roger, told us how to reach a lookout tower and then entertained us at his big deer and elk outfitters tent in the woods. Lotsa fun with the locals!!” 1:09:43 PM 11/14/03 “I skiid at Grand Targhee. Only thing is I hadn't skiid much since high school and the "hills" is much bigger there. Had a riot, but looked like a snow monster at the end of the day. Finally got down a run without falling which was a big accomplishment. I think I need to go again this year!” 1:11:08 PM 11/14/03 “Hey, haven't you taken a long enough break? Where's the workin part of this story? lol” 1:52:00 PM 11/14/03 “LOL @ dhutch! Glad to see someone keeping him honest!” 2:11:02 PM 11/14/03 “I'll fill y'all in on my own little Freeze Yer A@@ Off episode, etc later..." gojo 04:56:40 PM 11/12/03 Come on gojo! Get to typing! We only went there for one day of skiing, but it was a day when they were getting 12-14" of fresh stuff.” 2:44:59 PM 11/14/03 “Come on gojo! (o:3” 1:23:56 PM 11/15/03 “sarabelle, that sounds like the condense version...” 1:35:31 PM 11/15/03 “You are verry corretc. I for got to say that we smeld a woof. It was a verry stinky smel.” 1:40:20 PM 11/15/03 “The Crags wern't much... the trip, that is. I was able to get surprisingly close to the CG, tho - considering 2WD. I drove to within a mile-point-five, I reckon. I made it (only) about halfway up the steepest switchback in central ID before reversing it and a couple more while returning to a wide, flat spot. There we "camped". It was c-c-c-cold! I didn't have a thermometer, but it had to have been well below zero seeing's how it was zero in Round Valley - 60 miles south and 3000 ft. lower. I had my 20 degree bag inside my 0 degree, plus a well burrowed Gizmo. Belle slept under a folded rectangular bag. All of us were in the bed of the truck, under the camper cover. Mattresses totaled two, and bags totaled six. We were comfy. Come morning, we took a hike. I dressed Giz in his sweater and booties, strapped on my crampons, and we struck out on the road. We followed ATV tracks to where they turned around at the Crags camp ground. From then on we were breaking trail in the foot-plus deep snow. We walked about 1.5 miles beyond the camp ground, where we stopped for an early lunch. What parts of Gizmo that weren't covered by his clothing was caked in ice/snow. He was pretty cold, though he pretended not to notice. He was having a genuinely fine time, as was Belle. I, too, was having fun. It is a treat to play in snow - seeing's how I don't often get the experience. Anyhoo, Giz was wet and shivering. I had laid out the poncho under and around the boughs of an evergreen sappling so's to block the wind. Giz brushed himself against the limbs in an attempt to get shed of the clinging ice. It worked pretty well. He has some pretty good instinctive measures for these kinda things. Speaking of Gizmo... even though he was following my tracks - which I deliberately made as wide and deep as reason allowed - his every step was a struggle. He was all but having to swim. His hoppity strides were as much vertical as horizontal. He was having to work hard to keep up. After munching and warming, I decided to turn back toward the truck. I was a little concerned about getting the Mighty Mighty Tacoma back to 2WD-friendly roads. The memory of some steep ascents and descents coming in had me worried that when going through in the opposite direction would be impassable. I wanted to get an early enough start so's to get back to the "main" road before dark. So I strapped on the ten essentialed slacked-pack, stuffed Giz in my coat, and we reversed direction. We were back at the truck in good fashion, and back over Morgan Creek Summit at *about* dark. It's a three hour drive from where we parked to pavement, and vice versa. I was glad to have not needed the come-along, jack, rope, and chains that I had borrowed from my brother.” 10:18:46 AM 11/18/03 “Mequon, WI. Passing through looking for an old friend/family - or remnants thereof...” 10:43:40 AM 11/19/03 Home Sweet Home... “"Bittersweet" is more like it. Man. I had a great trip. I met some great people. Two months... 9500 miles. I still have a little money. The road still beckons... Crap! I better start thinking about something else... hmmmmm...” 2:37:35 PM 11/21/03 “Hey gojo, is that hotmail address in your profile good?” 2:55:59 PM 11/21/03 “Yepper.” 2:59:06 PM 11/21/03
