Why I Love My SUV

“Four wheel drive.

Great clearance.

More crumple zone in a crash.

Nice rack.

Plenty of room for gear.

The dog likes to roam in route to anywhere.

Was economical to buy.

It just drives eco-terrorists nuts!”

“I'm not too crazy about mine at the moment. I bought it a new set of tires last month and how does it repay me? It's in the shop having it's transmission yanked to have a seal replaced.

And with the transfer case for the 4WD, that's another 3 or 4 hours worth of labor...

“I live high on a hill about 1200'+ above the surrounding area & work. I have a wrangler & my wife has an Xterra (to pull her pop-up). I plow a few driveways with my jeep & dependable help around here is hard to find. My jeep also has a wooden rack for canoes,lumbar & such on it's hardtop. I actually take my vehicle in the woods so I needed an 8,000lb winch too along with bridging material. It's a '95 with 150,000mi on it, so I don't mind leaving it in the woods. I work crazy hours so I wanted another for back-up. Ended up with a hyundai elantra. Dealer got me to try it by taking 3,000 off the sticker price. I LOVE it. Kept my jeep for winter & bought some knarly tires for the elantra. The hyundai went through everything & we had a bad winter. The savings in gas (before prices went up) paid for it.”

I can load large purchases in it without a problem (recently loaded both a washer and a dryer with the rear door closed, also did the same with a new fridge)

gets me to any ski area without a problem

gets me through anything in NH that old man winter throws our way

dog loves to ride around in it

oh yeah, my Yakima rack looks great on it

what I don't love about it:
- going to the pumps
- price of decent tires
- just barely fits in garage due to height”

I have to admit, I loved the Ford Expedition I had in Fairbanks.”

“I have a Forester. The only thing I don't like about it is I can't get as far on a tank of gas as I could with my GMC Sierra. It had a 30gal tank and on a good day I was getting 20+ mpg. I could drive all week and only have to fill it once.”

I had recently thought about getting one of the popular import AWD wagons when I get my next car. The comparable wagon was $3,000 more than I paid for my Jeep, only had a 4 banger yet only got 3-5 MPG better mileage, had far less room inside, and wasn’t anywhere near to the 5,000 towing capacity as my Jeep.”

“We have a Ford F-150 extended cab 4WD, V-8 to use up at the cabin in tool around in the mountains, haul wood, etc., but get way more use out of the Subaru which is great on the highway, climbing up to the ski hill in the snow and gets about 30mpg. The pickup is a 1992 and we've only put about 40K miles on it.”

“An SUV-ist? Actually, I don't see a lot of SUVs (Explorers, Yukons, Suburbans, Hondas and those little KIA thingies) in the mountains; mostly pickups and an occasional Jeep. And the ranchers don't drive them; they drive their Eldorados into town.”

For what kind of "sport" do they drive Eldorados?”

“No aero you see before SUVs people who had boats and trailers and things to haul couldn’t haul them with the vehicles of the day so these things just sat in their driveways never used and that wasn’t much fun. You couldn’t even get to the mountains with the vehicles of the day, but SUVs changed all that. Now these things can be pulled and hauled and people can get to the mountains. Better living through SUVs.”

We actually have more pickups tooling around than SUV's. Usually there's a muddy dog and a couple hay bales in the back.”

“I got my Sport Trac as a sales car to start (cause i'm too young and manly for a car) But i wish i had gotten 4wd. My next vehicle will be a 4WD sport trac, or a 4WD f-150 crew cab with a Full brush gaurd. Sport tracs are awesome rides”

“Tax write-offs for most business vehicles are limited so taxpayers don't subsidize luxury cars, but it dosen't apply to light trucks -including SUVs that weigh 6,001 lbs! So if you buy a Monstero or Range Roller you can expense it rather than depreciate over limited write-offs over several years. The amount eligible for expensing was supposed to be $25,000 for 2003, but the new tax law bumped it up to $100,000, so if you buy the $71,000 Range Rover this year for "business" you can expense the entire cost! Cool! If you're in the top 35% tax bracket, the taxpayers get to pick up about $25,000!! Sweet!”
