Am I gonna die?View MessagesIf I don't wash my fruit... “OK...I know that you are suppose to wash fruit before you eat it. I know this sounds lame but how many apples would you have to eat to get cancer from the pestisides? Are there any documentations that it is dangerous? See what happens when I have too much time on my hands?” 2:21:00 PM 8/26/03 “I never wash fruit and it has not affffffffffeccttttid me tu muchly, I dint thing so, didja? Huh? What was the kweschun?” 2:23:52 PM 8/26/03 “yes” 2:24:10 PM 8/26/03 “The short answer is yes, but this is one area of human endeavor where you may want to take your good sweet time getting around to it!” 2:24:56 PM 8/26/03 “Forget the pesticides. Just go stand by the fruit section at the grocery store and watch all the people handle fruit before they buy it. I bet you'll wash it then!” 2:26:34 PM 8/26/03 “aaaahhh...good point aero!! ICK...I'm half way through this apple I think I will retire the other half!” 2:27:42 PM 8/26/03 “My work here is done!” 2:28:49 PM 8/26/03 “umm can we ask tom terrific to do a test eat? or would that be wrong?” 2:31:47 PM 8/26/03 “If lyra were here, she'd just tell him to EAT IT!... But she's not apparently.” 2:33:18 PM 8/26/03 “I would think that by the time someone picks the apple, they move it from field to barn, they transport it to the warehouse, it gets packaged and delievered to the store, you handle it and bag it, that there would probably be few pesticides left over. Then again, sometimes they spray them with wax to prevent it from rotting but I don't know at what stage of the process that is. This reminds me of my chemical engineering class I took in college. We were studying risk assesment and the example used was peanut butter and cancer. Peanut butter is cancerous if taken in big enough quantities over a certain amount of time. If I remember correctly it's several pounds/day for almost a life time to get a viable cancer rate.” 2:41:06 PM 8/26/03 “I also thought a report came out at some point if you eat the apple seed it can cause cancer...HECK..maybe we should just stop eating doesn't everything cause cancer???” 2:43:21 PM 8/26/03 YUMMY “ ”2:43:49 PM 8/26/03 “ 2:45:51 PM 8/26/03 “It won't give you cancer, CG. It just toughens up your organs!” 2:46:12 PM 8/26/03 “ ”2:46:12 PM 8/26/03 “The purple one looks like it's out of a Dr. Seuss book!” 2:46:57 PM 8/26/03 “One cel two cell Red cell Blue cell” 2:47:20 PM 8/26/03 “LMAO Tree!!!” 3:12:16 PM 8/26/03 “I agree with ynami-Yes. I just cannot tell you when.” 3:19:09 PM 8/26/03 “crazy, I don't wash my fruit either, at least not very often. I am still alive. My kids only eat washed fruit. I won't give them anything else. I am worried that it will make them sick.” 3:23:29 PM 8/26/03 Priorities, people! “EVERYTHING can cause disease if done to excess. Drinking too much water, exercising too much / too intensely, too much sex, all normally "healthy" activities can KILL YOU! Why do y'all read this stuff?? The worst thing you can do, statistically, is leave your house in the morning! There are all kinds of EVIL THINGS waiting for you out in the world...” 3:25:45 PM 8/26/03 “Hmmm Gem....we wash it for our kids...not ourselves...what will they do if WE get sick!!!” 3:26:34 PM 8/26/03 “Gee thanks wanderer for those up lifting thoughts...I think I might just stay home!” 3:31:24 PM 8/26/03 Get a grip “The point, crazygurl, is that you can worry yourself to death about low-probability crap and never live your life. Put things in perspective... Example...I fly a lot for business & encounter a lot of people who are afraid of flying. The truth is, and we all know this, driving to the airport is FAR, FAR more hazardous than flying across country. But no-one thinks about driving, they fear the unknown, and they fear what they think they're not in control of. Eat as many da@$ unwashed apples as you want, it will probably make zero difference in your life, except you'll be happier because you like apples, and healthier because you ate them... unwashed or not.” 3:47:43 PM 8/26/03 “Worrying getting cancer from pesticides on your unwashed apples has probably cut your life shorter than actually eating the pesticides on your unwashed apples. Especially if you count the time spent worrying about it against the rest of your life.” 3:54:28 PM 8/26/03 “You know, when I hear that _________ is more dangerous than ___________, according to a study done by (fill in the blank), the cynic in me jumps up. They never tell you how much more dangerous!!! You know, if it was one tenth of a hundreth of a percent more dangerous, when taken with these other items, for persons of this skin color, and the stars are all aligned, while there is a full moon, yada, yada, yada... Well then, they are legally entitled, actually telling the truth, to make such statements!!! All they have to say is: "According to studies, ______ is more dangerous than ______. It is also interesting to note who paid for the studies (They never tell you, but they probably paid for the study themselves). Also, what were the controls, how many test subjects (10?) It just goes on and on. Years ago, sugar was deemed bad for you, so you should take sacharin or nutrisweet with your coffee. A few years later, suger was back to being good and "all natural". Apparently, if memory serves me here, there is a particular ingredient of sugar, that in the exact alignment of circumstances, may cause a slightly increased risk of something, for people with a certain chromosone alignment. The increased odds were something like one in ten million, or something like that. (Okay, I'm just throwing it out here now) But sugar was far healthier for you than sacharrin and nutrisweet. It all had to do with advertising and selling something and making a buck. It happens so much, how does one really tell what is safe? I know they use pesticides and all on groceries, but I won't put them on my garden. the bugs get some, and I get some... But seriously, we do try to eat better and live a safer life. There are some things that are pretty obvious, and others, well the stress exerted worrying about them is more harmful than what you are supposed to be worrying about. If anyone wants my full, unrestrained opinion on the subject, just e-mail me and I'll give it to you!” 4:13:11 PM 8/26/03 How old (naive) are you people? “Crazygurl... Monkeybutt, jeez, do you guys believe everything you hear / read? Do you need "proof" statements to tell you the sun is shining outside? Have you ever considered looking out your window & making your OWN decisions? (if you can't follow my point, you have other problems)” 4:28:13 PM 8/26/03 “Last time you were in a commercial orchard did you look around at the bathroom facilities for the fruit pickers ? I mean where they washed their hands after going potty. The psychological picture this paints is sufficient for me to wash all fruit.” 4:31:55 PM 8/26/03 “Wanderer, I think you missed my point...” 5:35:37 PM 8/26/03 Monkeyboy, I did “357 words & 22 lines to say "Don't worry about the small stuff" was too much for me, I jumped to conclusions. Learn to be concise. I just fired someone today for not being able to communicate effectively, he was way too effusive, most people tired of listening to him & tuned him out before he got to his point. Too bad, too, because he was an incredibly intelligent individual with a lot to offer.” 6:43:39 PM 8/26/03 Geobeet... “...do you wash your fried chicken before you eat it? If so, at KFC?” 6:50:32 PM 8/26/03 “Yes, you are going to die. We just don't know when.” 7:01:42 PM 8/26/03 “we are not going to start a debate about what can and cannot kill you, do we? If I would watch everything I do or eat just because I read an article, I would probably be not be eating or doing anything.” 7:01:56 PM 8/26/03 “Wanderer, normally I am more concise, I was rambling there for a while, notice my last statement. It was a sarcastic statement about me giving my full opinion, if anyone wanted more.... Hard to post inflection. uh... you actually counted the words and lines.....” 7:21:50 PM 8/26/03 “ Everything... Everything... gives you cancer Everything... Everything... gives you cancer There's no cure, there's no answer Everything gives you cancer Don't touch that dial! Don't try to smile Just take this pill It's in your file... Don't work hard... Don't play hard... Don't plan for... the graveyard REMEMBER! Everything... Everything... gives you cancer Everything... Everything... gives you cancer There's no cure, there's no answer Everything gives you cancer Don't work by night Don't play by day You'll feel all right But you will pay No caffeine... No protein... No booze or... nicotine REMEMBER! Everything... Everything... gives you cancer Everything... Everything... gives you cancer There's no cure, there's no answer Everything gives you cancer "Cancer" Joe Jackson Night and Day (1982)” 7:36:55 PM 8/26/03 “You can do everything right and get still killed when you least expect it. Personally, I choose to enjoy life. That includes participating in behavior that is higher risk than sitting at home. If it kills me, at least I've had a good run. My current goal is to live to 53, when my son (and youngest child) turns 18. Anything after that is gravy, as far as I'm concerned.” 8:00:12 PM 8/26/03 “Stay away from farmers' markets.” 8:09:52 PM 8/26/03 “why do you ask crazygurl.......” 8:12:31 PM 8/26/03 “OH Boy...I was actually kinda sorta being funny..but I thank everyone for their advice and insight. I really don't worry about all that stuff...in fact I probably don't take things into consideration as I should. I'm a pretty laid back gal! I don't listen to everything I hear..I eat McD's drink too much caffiene and drink water out of the spicket...yaddie yaddie yaddie. FLYING though...Grrrr....that is another story...kinda like that fear of needles we talked about on another thread!” 10:05:46 AM 8/27/03 “you should only fly DRUNK. thats how I do it.” 10:16:47 AM 8/27/03 “Don't fly drunk, you'll run into the other planes.” 10:17:30 AM 8/27/03 “You could get pulled over too... that balloon test is hell up there!” 10:18:18 AM 8/27/03 “i always eat organic fruit when it's possible and i don't worry much about washing it. invisible bug poop is probably healthy and rich in vitamin B12 and the pesticides are not an issue. when it's not organic, however, i wash and scrub and peel. but you will live. (incidentally, there's that great scene in that tenessee williams play with blanche predicting how her eulogy will state she died of eating an unwashed grape - comes straight out of left field and is quite remarkable because we all know, by that point in the play, that when she dies, no one will care enough to say anything at all...)” 10:18:59 AM 8/27/03 “LMAO, especially at Aero. Just don't eat or bite into the seed of the "May Apple." It will probably kill you. Deer eat them, but just let the seed pass through their system. bitpusher - I've already passed my goal. It was New Year's Day, 2000.” 10:22:53 AM 8/27/03 “Natalio.... you do have to wonder who's picking this fruit and what they've been up to though ;o)” 10:24:18 AM 8/27/03 “You're not dying. You just can't think of anything good to do.” 10:24:27 AM 8/27/03 “I've got 12 and a half long years for go...lol...” 10:24:56 AM 8/27/03 “clear” 10:24:59 AM 8/27/03 “ynamiynami, please don't... if i let myself wonder about that (or - ewwwwwww - the sneezing COOP shoppers), then i will become nauseaus and i will want to vomit up years and years of retrospective disgust. so i respectfully ignore your warning, ok?” 10:31:11 AM 8/27/03 here ya go 10:34:54 AM 8/27/03
