Gear List ListView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 21 of 21 messages posted.
A Few Gear Lists “ Gear List List I have been purusing other gear lists around the net for a while, it's a way to pass the time between trips. I decided to put a page together of many of the lists I've seen on the web. There are a bunch of ultralight sites and some trail-talkers on there as well as a few others. The idea was to link straight to the gear lists. If you have such a list on the net that I haven't linked - please let me know and I'll add it, I'd love to add a bunch more and I'm always interested to see new sites. If I've linked to your site and you don't want me to - then please let me know.” 8:40:37 PM 9/01/03 Big Coop. “Do you want me to add you to my clubs websites links page? 8)” 8:46:55 PM 9/01/03 You Only Need A List Of What YOU Own “I have my own gear list on spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel, and all I have to do is highlight only what I want to use for a particular trip, then when it's in my pack highlight the block beside it so I know it's packed...kind of like making the list and then checking off the items as you pack.” 8:50:34 PM 9/01/03 “That is a very good idea Buddur! 8)” 8:53:19 PM 9/01/03 “CMB - Sure that would be cool - I looked at your site when putting the list together, but I couldn't find a gear list per se. It's interesting to see how some folks are more gearheads (like StoveStomper) and some are more trip picture focused like you and SnowNymph. I get a real kick out of people who backpack all of the time, but don't really care to talk about gear. I just can't seem to resist the urge. Other accomplished trailtalkers with sites but no real gear list are: SnowNymph, Phil, HumanPackMule, CMB and many others. Buddus - yeah - I have a similar Excel spreadsheet with slightly different lists depending on the weather. I keep it handy while packing as well. I guess I think that some of the value of reading other lists is that when I do want to add to my gear collection - I can see what works for others. I think I have been able to skip some bad gear choices and bad trip experiences by reading what others have experienced.” 9:03:24 PM 9/01/03 “Ok I will add it. 8)” 9:20:31 PM 9/01/03 Big Coop “The beautiful thing about TT is you can pick and choose what works for others here on TT, and morph it into what your comfort levels and what you want to get out your backpacking experience. For example, after hiking with some TT'rs, I've learned to incorporate lightweight ideas, without giving up some of the creature comforts that make my backpacking experiences enjoyable, but there are some things on people's lists that I'd never try or buy, just because of personal prefernces. Be sure to think about what you like about your experience before buying some tof the things on gear lists. Oh, and what Buddur said...lol!” 9:24:28 PM 9/01/03 “Hey Buddur - could you email me your spreadsheet file? I'm no so curious about the gear you bring but how you set up your sheet. It's bjj@fast.net tanks!” 9:37:42 PM 9/01/03 For Gear "Ruminants" “Don't get me wrong - there is no substitute for experience. My list is not so much for beginners, but more for a gearhead that likes to read other peoples' lists to get more ideas or to just pass the time. I too have learned far more from fellow TT'rs than reading all of these lists, because you can actually see it in action. For example, I can read all day about the Hennessy Hammock, but until om let me try hers out I had no real idea of whether I wanted one or not, the same with Stovestomper and his Henry Shires Tarptent. I have noticed that some of the most intense lists I have linked to are by people who don't seem to hike that much. The time they spend on gear vs. the time they spend actually using it is is far greater than many of the TT'rs. I think, for those gear "ruminants", it is more about the gear then getting out there - that's ok though - they are the scientists of the bunch. I myself would love to hike every friggin weekend, but that would pull me away from my family too often. When a trip is not on the horizon I tend to start playing in the gear box. It's sort of a way to pacify my mind. Reading gear lists is an extension of that. So is reading TT for me.” 5:53:54 AM 9/02/03 “Coop I am going to put your website on the clubs website tonight. What do you want me to call it? 8)” 2:13:07 PM 9/02/03 Big coop. “I have added your website to the clubs website. Go check it out and tell me if you like it? 8)” 2:24:23 PM 9/02/03 “I have a winter mountaineering gear list posted on my Unca Gremlin trip. It's on the What gear? post at the bottom. If you're interested.” 3:00:48 PM 9/02/03 WTF??? “How could you neglect Phil's "pack weight estimator" which he has on Phil's photo page? I like the way its laid out?” 3:18:36 PM 9/02/03 Thanks “To CMB for the cool link - but such prominence? I should be lower down on that list somewhere. To Limpy for pointing out Phil's list. I was scouring his personal site and never noticed the link on his photo page - it's a good one too. I'll link it up tonight as well as the mountaineering one from Gremlin.” 4:46:07 PM 9/02/03 “No I put them in order as I see fit! 8)” 5:27:59 PM 9/02/03 It's A Type Of List Everyone Should Have “Hey Buddur - could you email me your spreadsheet file? I'm no so curious about the gear you bring but how you set up your sheet." Pennsy 09:37:42 PM 09/01/03 This is how you do it... Make a few different sheets within a file and mark each as "Summer, Winter, Spring/Fall" then, only put on the list for each sheet all the gear you have that *could be* used for that respected season. Then, after considering the weather forecast the days before hiking, you can easily use the list to figure out what you need (and don't need) to bring. Highlight only the items you want to take, then when each is packed, highlight the box beside it to show you have it I don't really use the weights of each individual item anymore, and rather just weigh the pack when it's packed full (then when I get home too).” 8:38:30 PM 9/02/03 “-Phil's list has been added. -CMB's website has been added to backpacking links. -I searched but couldn't find Gremlin's list. Can you give me a few more hints Gremlin? If I could figure out how to upload Excel files to my cheapy free site then I would upload my version of essentially what Buddur outlines above. Depending on your Excel expertise you can use database, sorting, and a few other fancy formulas to make it pretty slick.” 8:51:24 PM 9/02/03 Dang, now I'm going to have to update my List! “Hey coop! don't forget about Backpacking Gear Weight Calculator for Windows. Chris Ibbeson's excellent free program for keeping track of gear weights. I use and recommend it.” 9:24:23 PM 9/02/03 “SS - good call - I've used his program as well. I've added it.” 9:36:59 PM 9/02/03 “BC, Got to the 'Trips' page and click on 'Unca' Gremlin's Male Menopause Trip', scroll down to the 'Pete, what type of gear are we talking?' thread. It's all there.” 9:07:02 AM 9/03/03 “Found it! - thanks Gremlin.” 12:28:12 PM 9/03/03
