How about the San Diego Zoo? Having done docent work for the Wildlife Conservation Society here in New York, that's a place I would definitely visit. That is, if this kind of thing interests you...

“You're gonna be in one of the sweet spots of town to begin with. I would recommend renting a bike and cruising the boardwalk, from the South Mission Beach jetty all the way up to and slightly past Crystal Pier in PB. This wont cost you much and you'll be able to do it within a time frame that works for you, since you will never be far from your hotel and traffic will not be an issue. Ride for a while, stop and quench your thirst in the sand for a while, ride for a while... you get the picture. The Mission Bay boardwalk is also a very nice ride.”

“Mission and Pacific Beaches were pretty nice as well as La Jolla.

Trader Joe's was a nice little place to shop for munchies.

I had no luck in getting any TTers to join me while I was in SD, maybe you will have better luck.

“To kill smaller amounts of time, even after dark, you can toss a chunk of squid into the bay somewhere not far from your hotel. Sit there with a few frosties, watch the freaks and hope you hear drag. I could meet up with you on my lunchbreak and bum you a rod & reel suitable for this kind of fishing if you're up for it.”
