Pretty good jolt at 6:40 this evening (Pacific) - we had time to decide we should get under something. USGS has it at 3.9. Then a 3.0 aftershock about 25 minutes ago....

I felt it. The epi was about 12 miles from me. Seems like every earthquake is 12 miles from me. I should move one of these days. Hmmm, maybe Pt. Reyes.

Dang, I was hoping this would be a thread about the game Quake. I rock at Quake! [no pun intended, ok, yes it was intended]

I heard about that on the radio this morning, Bowlderman! I was wondering how close you were. Must have been a big one- your typing looks a little shakey!

The epicenters (main and aftershocks were only a few hundred yards apart) are about 5 miles from our house. It brought all of the neighbors out onto the street to discuss it. Of course, I had printouts of the quake info from the USGS site for everyone to review within 5 minutes of the quake. A 3.9 usually isn't much, but the proximity of this one to us made it feel pretty strong. Cameron's eyes got pretty big - it was his first earthquake while conscious. Will post a map of the epicenters shortly....

Pretty good shaker this morning at 3:35. It was a 3.4, centered near lake Temescal in the Oakland hills, and only about 6km deep. Woke us up, that's for sure!!

As BowlderGal explains, she prefers earthquakes to other things like tornadoes that she got to experience in her home state of MI. When a tornado is approaching, they let you know for a good hour before it gets there that you're about to die. Worse with hurricanes. At least with an earthquake, you don't have all that time to worry about it....

I know. I went through a few fairly mild ones in the Philippines. For the next week I walked around with the feeling the entire world was made of Jello.

i had a couple of small shakes in West TN as a kid - fairly surprising events. We also had to deal with tornadoes. And down in FL last summer there were of course the multiple hurricanes.

The hurricanes were BY FAR the worst - we all watched them churn around the Carribean for several weeks before they bore down on us. I told folks that I'd take my chances with tornadoes ANYDAY over the hurricanes.

Glad to hear yall are all ok the Bowlderman!

The tornado that I experienced in Kansas did not give us more that about 15 seconds notice. One minute it was raining hard and then it sounded like a freight train. Luckily the tornado was just skipping down the street. We didn't get the whole thing but enough to cause a tree to fall on the front porch of the house I was living in. After that, everytime I heard thunder and hard rain I got a maximum pucker on.

we have earthquakes in Germany, but they are nothing compared to the ones in CA. IF we have a little crack in the walls we are hit "badly", at least that's how it was years ago.

Tornadoes: I sleep through those suckers, which makes them even more dangerous for me at night. I would never wake up, and actually slept throught the one that hit clarksville back then.

Glad you are okay
