Anyone canoed Mammoth Cave areaView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 13 of 13 messages posted.
“I'm planning a two-day float in the Mammoth Cave area. Anyone know a good place to put in and get out? Shuttling is not a problem and we have our own canoes.” 8:27:32 AM 9/05/03 “wow that sounds very cool. can you tell me more about the cave? state, history stuff like that. thanks” 8:29:52 AM 9/05/03 “LOL, do a search. There's tons of info on the Web. You can start here. http://www.mammoth.cave.national-park.com/” 8:39:31 AM 9/05/03 “so i take it that you have never been there before. oh well” 8:40:41 AM 9/05/03 “I did a tour of the cave complex many many years ago, I was probably in grade school. So, the answer is no, I'm not familiar with the area.” 8:44:08 AM 9/05/03 “It is very wet in the river part, and very deep in the cave part.” 8:45:09 AM 9/05/03 “Hmm. In that case, I may reconsider this trip” 9:02:54 AM 9/05/03 “There's a wilderness area there too. I've been planning to go up there to go backpacking, but haven't ever made it.” 9:09:32 AM 9/05/03 “What kind of mileage? You can put in at Houchins Ferry (Green River mile 185) and take out at Entrance Road (mile 197) or Dennison Ferry (mile 205).” 9:25:52 AM 9/05/03 I did the Green River... “last year with Prowler. All I can tell you about the Green, is that I'll NEVER go back to float it again!!! Not that it wasn't pretty, but it has NO current. We did the section between the Ferries, and it took 9 hours to float it...and we paddled and paddled and paddled...all friggin day. if you stopped paddlin, you went backwards with the wind. There is absolutely NO flow. If your lookin to notch off rivers, then do it, but I could certainly find greater river enjoyment elsewhere. As for backpackin...its ideal!!! there is a warren of trails there that can get you far into the backcountry. Permits are required, and I believe free at the visitor center. Dogs are allowed on the trails, not in the caves. There is a hotel on site that has kennels available on a first come basis. The caves are cool, but they are not your typical stalagtite/stalagmite formation type cave. It is a national park, so go here to get all the details you will need. If I remember correctly, crazy mike has a trip planned for Mammoth. I will more than likely be on that trip with the Dog Faced Boy. Hope that this info helps.” 9:26:17 AM 9/05/03 “Reverse that. Put in at Dennison or Entrance.” 9:29:15 AM 9/05/03 “"warren of trails???" Is that some lord a leaping or what? How do I meet "Warren of Trails?" Is he a nice guy? Kinda like Robin Hood?” 6:02:10 PM 9/05/03 lizs....your too witty for me... “you must have had a restful day to be able to put that pun together.” 9:35:46 AM 9/08/03
