Last week while on vacation at Sunset Beach, NC, I hung out with a group of volunteers who keep watch on Loggerhead nests that are expected to "boil", i.e., hatch. Their role is to make sure that all of the babies make it to the ocean. The volunteers build a trench in the sand and lure the little guys to the ocean with flashlights. Otherwise, some get distracted by house lights and end up dying in the dunes. Only 1 in 10,000 make it to maturity.

Some people argue that the Loggerheads have been making it to the ocean for, what, a million years or so without human assistance. This is true, but the turtles didn't always have to deal with human intervention which often results in their deaths.
