next year, im driving to baxter from indiana. i figure the quickest way is to drive thru southern ontario and quebec to quebec city, then head south to the u.s., then take u.s. 201 to state hiway 6 til i get to greenville. from there i wonder if i should take the private road straight to baxter, or take the slightly longer but with better roads route to millinocket and then in. are there any permits i need to buy to take the private road, or is it not worth it because the roads are too bad. any advice, especially from twiggy or anyone else living in the are would be mucho help.

Dang! ;)

Keep driving a couple more hours on 201 and you'll be at my house!

Golden Road has my vote, no facilities though, so gas up and make sure your spare tire's good! The road is good, logging trucks have the right of way and they ain't kiddin'.

I'll look at my info (it's at home) see what I can find about gate fees and open/close times if they still exist. The gate before Abol Bridge isn't in operation anymore, but I've never been on the Greenville end.

i will, twig.

when IS the best time to go for mild temps and few bugs? and when can i start making reservations?

my goal is to spend 2 nites each at roaring brook and chimney pond, and 1 or 2 nites at katahdin stream, and i defineitely want to cross the knife edge

I'm pretty sure the reservation system is changing this year, and you'll be able to reserve a couple of months in advance of your trip rather than having to reserve Jan 1.

August is good.

I climbed there in early July. Temps were great, can't remember the bug situation--which means it couldn't be too bad.

The knife edge remains one of my favorite all time hiking experiences.

next year im getting an extra five or six vacation days for a total of 15 vacation days and 7 or 8 personal days (not sure which). im tentatively planning 4 5-night trips, with baxter as the must-make trip. also on the itinerary are gsmnp, grand canyon or archs np (or similar), and the minong trail on isle royale. also, i defineitely want to reschedule pictured rocks, and might try to hit algonquin provincial park in ontario.

If you're going through Canada make sure you have the proper identification. I'm looking at a conference in BC and they are telling people from the US that a driver's license is no longer adequate, you need either a passport or a picture ID AND a certified birth certificate.

Additionally, if you changed your name at marriage, a certified copy of the marriage license.

If you're coming through SW Ontario, beware the Toronto rush hour, seems lasts most of the day. Highway's like a long parkinglot! I find it easier to go through in late morning or middle of the night.

Algonquin is nice but overrated. Try Tobermory (Bruce Penninsula Nat. Park) or Killarny Prov. Park. If you're coming to hike up here, and want company, I'd love to join you.

Getting a passport isn't that big a deal. You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate. I've got one for just in case stuff, like exiting the country in a hurry.
