after 5 1/2 years with the same pc, im in the market for a new one. i like the gateway 310s, but what im really looking for is a package without a monitor (i have a really good one), and with CD-RW. any suggestions?

dell has great deals online. You have to be patient and wait for the free shipping deal. You can get a loaded pc (cdrw and dvd)for 400.Plus theres no tax for most states. And they give you 6months free dial up isp.Always go for internal burners they are way faster and are compatible/ready to use.I am having a nightmare trying t get a compatible dvd burner for my dell-so many software conflicts etc...

always had some kind a problem. My biggest problem was an upgrade problem though. The worst: the monitor. I send it back the day I got it. Bad.

It's been so long ago, so I can't really remember exact details. I could've been spoilt to though. I had only dells before. Still don't know why I have tried gateway.

i have to say though, I had a neighbor that loves his gateway, but he had a packard bell before gateway. lol

2scoops, have you looked into building your own. Buy all the components separately and install them yourself. My son built one and he had top of the line computer and it cost him half of what it would have if he bought it already assembled.

My DELL just killed ANOTHER hard drive. First one was replaced under warranty, this one, it seems is on me!

I'm with Ewker on this one. The one I have now is a homemade job my cousin put together for me with stuff I already had. When I decide I need more horsepower, I'm going to buy the components and do it myself with his help. It will save beaucoup dough.

Have you considered a laptop? I have an HP - but wouldn't necessarily recommend it - what I do like is the wireless modem and being able to take the thing anywhere on the house with the same functionality of sitting at my desk.

ABS computers http://www.abspc.com/ are better than Dell. None are terribly cheap though.

I bought a dell Dimension 5100 last month. It came with a screwed up registry. The thing would freeze after 40 minutes.

I tried to send it back to Dell, but they wanted to discount my refund. I am waiting on the final word from Dell.

My advice, buy your computer from someone who has a brick and mortar store.

Periodically check out techbargins.com. They post all the most current special deals that dell has going, as well as most of the other manufacturers. Beware: you can fall into the...oooh, I need that!....and that! trap.

how much better is a 2.4 gig processor than a 2.2 gig? i normally only have a couple programs running at a time. im not a heavy computer user.

I feel that if you max out the RAM and get a 2.0 Gig Processor you will do just fine. Also get at least 220 Gig's for a hard drive!I have 3 hard drives in my PC and I use all of them to the fullest!

I have also maxed out my ram as will as other things!

220 gigs? no way dude. 40 is plenty.

my choices for the dell im building online are 2.2 and 2.4. so you think 2.2 is fine for light computer use?

I do tons of stuff on my PC.

Music
My Band.

Tones of stuff!

Electronic music.

Games!

2scoops get a 80 gig and max your memory out and that is the ticket!

I have 1.5 gigs of ram in my PC and I have 2.5 megs of floating mem for XP to use and my PC runs like a rabbit on crack!

Just for comparison, I have two drives on my computer, 40GB and a 60GB. The 60GB drive is almost empty. The 40GB drive has 29GB free, I think, and I have lots of games, a couple of compilers, about 30 or 40 albums ripped and converted to MP3's, and lots and lots of photos and digital maps, including all of the 1:100000 scale USGS maps for the Appalachian Trail.

A 40GB drive should be enough.

o yea. for normal ppl like you and me. then theres mike. to say that he has a prodigous amount of stuff on his pc would be an understatement. hell, my current pc has something like 3. thats awful cramped. im more interested in processor speed, bit. is 2.2 good enough for light to moderate usage?
2scoops
5:13:45 PM
9/10/03

Oh sure. My P3866 is fine for most of the stuff I do. There's only a couple of games I have that its too slow for.

If you were trying to decide between 2.2 and 3.0, I'd say go higher. But 2.2 and 2.4? Not a big enough diff.

I would go for a lot of memory though. XP is a real hog. I'd go for 512MB at the very least. If you do go with that much, make sure you've got memory slots free so you can add more in the future.

Go to CostCo & buy an eMachine. Everyone uses the same mother boards, hard drives, memory chips, etc., If you spend more $$ than that you're simply paying for sombody's marketing & advertising budget.

dude,539 is a lot especially for celeron...You usually can get that set up for 399 or 349...Dont worry about the free shipping that happens 2x/month.Cdrw are like 30 bux now so dont think yer gettin a whale of a deal. Also my dell came with cdrw+dvd palyer w/60gb harddrive. The only thing lacking is my 128ram.Things slow down a lot if im using a graphics program-macromedia -and have 4 or more ie windows open.Wait for a better deal.
