Shopping for a New PCView Messages“after 5 1/2 years with the same pc, im in the market for a new one. i like the gateway 310s, but what im really looking for is a package without a monitor (i have a really good one), and with CD-RW. any suggestions?” 4:54:03 PM 9/09/03 “dell!! nothing else to say! DELL!!” 4:55:48 PM 9/09/03 “which one?” 4:57:42 PM 9/09/03 “we just got the dimension 2400, I think. It smokes!” 4:58:44 PM 9/09/03 “oh, i forgot to mention. price is also a very important consideration. im looking for the best price with a cd-rw (as long as its a quality product)” 4:59:30 PM 9/09/03 “5 and a half years with the same pc,,,, what do you have, a 486?” 5:01:48 PM 9/09/03 5:02:04 PM 9/09/03 “Probably a P233...or maybe an early PII...” 5:02:51 PM 9/09/03 “i already have a monitor and a burner, i might go with the gateway 310SE for $399” 5:15:09 PM 9/09/03 “I wasn't sure what computer to get. I saw a Eddie Haskell look alike on a commercial. "Dude" your getting a Dell...well ok” 5:17:51 PM 9/09/03 “Here's another vote for Dell.” 5:19:27 PM 9/09/03 “i bought one gateway a while back. never again!” 5:22:53 PM 9/09/03 “dell has great deals online. You have to be patient and wait for the free shipping deal. You can get a loaded pc (cdrw and dvd)for 400.Plus theres no tax for most states. And they give you 6months free dial up isp.Always go for internal burners they are way faster and are compatible/ready to use.I am having a nightmare trying t get a compatible dvd burner for my dell-so many software conflicts etc...” 5:30:02 PM 9/09/03 davexx “can you point me to the loaded pc (cdrw and dvd)for 400? what i saw was 600 minus 100 rebate gem- whats the problem with gateway?” 5:36:14 PM 9/09/03 “always had some kind a problem. My biggest problem was an upgrade problem though. The worst: the monitor. I send it back the day I got it. Bad. It's been so long ago, so I can't really remember exact details. I could've been spoilt to though. I had only dells before. Still don't know why I have tried gateway. i have to say though, I had a neighbor that loves his gateway, but he had a packard bell before gateway. lol” 5:51:09 PM 9/09/03 “2scoops, have you looked into building your own. Buy all the components separately and install them yourself. My son built one and he had top of the line computer and it cost him half of what it would have if he bought it already assembled.” 11:13:29 PM 9/09/03 “My DELL just killed ANOTHER hard drive. First one was replaced under warranty, this one, it seems is on me!” 12:21:12 AM 9/10/03 “I'm with Ewker on this one. The one I have now is a homemade job my cousin put together for me with stuff I already had. When I decide I need more horsepower, I'm going to buy the components and do it myself with his help. It will save beaucoup dough.” 2:42:09 AM 9/10/03 “pee containers are cheep dont spend too much on one” 4:32:48 AM 9/10/03 “Have you considered a laptop? I have an HP - but wouldn't necessarily recommend it - what I do like is the wireless modem and being able to take the thing anywhere on the house with the same functionality of sitting at my desk.” 5:59:01 AM 9/10/03 7:01:24 AM 9/10/03 “I bought a dell Dimension 5100 last month. It came with a screwed up registry. The thing would freeze after 40 minutes. I tried to send it back to Dell, but they wanted to discount my refund. I am waiting on the final word from Dell. My advice, buy your computer from someone who has a brick and mortar store.” 7:17:24 AM 9/10/03 “ewk, thats something im considering. i figure thats something even someone with my limited electronic skills can manage.” 8:12:11 AM 9/10/03 Hey 2scoops! “Call me and tell me how much you want to spend and I can give you a great hook up! 8)” 3:00:16 PM 9/10/03 cmb “400-600” 3:19:00 PM 9/10/03 “I will see what I can do! 8)” 3:41:12 PM 9/10/03 “Periodically check out techbargins.com. They post all the most current special deals that dell has going, as well as most of the other manufacturers. Beware: you can fall into the...oooh, I need that!....and that! trap.” 3:59:49 PM 9/10/03 “how much better is a 2.4 gig processor than a 2.2 gig? i normally only have a couple programs running at a time. im not a heavy computer user.” 4:42:54 PM 9/10/03 “I feel that if you max out the RAM and get a 2.0 Gig Processor you will do just fine. Also get at least 220 Gig's for a hard drive!I have 3 hard drives in my PC and I use all of them to the fullest! I have also maxed out my ram as will as other things! 8)” 4:46:17 PM 9/10/03 “Jeez, CMB, what did you do? Download the whole Internet?” 4:47:45 PM 9/10/03 “220 gigs? no way dude. 40 is plenty. my choices for the dell im building online are 2.2 and 2.4. so you think 2.2 is fine for light computer use?” 4:49:18 PM 9/10/03 “I do tons of stuff on my PC. Music My Band. Tones of stuff! Electronic music. Games! 2scoops get a 80 gig and max your memory out and that is the ticket! I have 1.5 gigs of ram in my PC and I have 2.5 megs of floating mem for XP to use and my PC runs like a rabbit on crack! 8)” 4:57:37 PM 9/10/03 “ill settle for a beagle on amp” 4:58:58 PM 9/10/03 “Oh all right! 8) When I upgrade again I could sell you my PC for $1400.” 4:59:56 PM 9/10/03 “all the massive pirati....err downloading you do, you need an african swallow on crack” 5:05:50 PM 9/10/03 “I might! I have good IP blocks set up now so have fun trying to find me!Fuc@ the RIAA!!!! 8)” 5:08:33 PM 9/10/03 “Just for comparison, I have two drives on my computer, 40GB and a 60GB. The 60GB drive is almost empty. The 40GB drive has 29GB free, I think, and I have lots of games, a couple of compilers, about 30 or 40 albums ripped and converted to MP3's, and lots and lots of photos and digital maps, including all of the 1:100000 scale USGS maps for the Appalachian Trail. A 40GB drive should be enough.” 5:10:09 PM 9/10/03 “o yea. for normal ppl like you and me. then theres mike. to say that he has a prodigous amount of stuff on his pc would be an understatement. hell, my current pc has something like 3. thats awful cramped. im more interested in processor speed, bit. is 2.2 good enough for light to moderate usage?” 5:13:45 PM 9/10/03 “Oh sure. My P3866 is fine for most of the stuff I do. There's only a couple of games I have that its too slow for. If you were trying to decide between 2.2 and 3.0, I'd say go higher. But 2.2 and 2.4? Not a big enough diff. I would go for a lot of memory though. XP is a real hog. I'd go for 512MB at the very least. If you do go with that much, make sure you've got memory slots free so you can add more in the future.” 5:17:40 PM 9/10/03 “No way MAX IT OUT!!!!!!!!!! 8)” 5:20:16 PM 9/10/03 “im on a budget, and as much as id like to have lots of memory, i think im going to have to go with 245 megs for now. right now, anything would be an improvement over my current pc. besides, i can always add more memory later, right?” 5:23:54 PM 9/10/03 oops “make that 256 meg” 5:28:52 PM 9/10/03 ok heres the build i think im going with.......... “Dimension 2400 Celeron $534 Intel® Celeron® Processor at 2.20GHz with 400MHz front side bus 256MB Shared DDR SDRAM at 333MHz (Performs at 266MHz for 400FSB systems) Dell Recommended 40GB Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive 48x CD ROM Drive FREE UPGRADE! New 48x/24x/48x Max CD-RW Drive Dell™ Wireless Keyboard and Optical Mouse No monitor Altec Lansing® ADA215 Speakers Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition¹² 1 Year Limited Warranty plus 1 Year At-Home Service” 5:35:13 PM 9/10/03 “Thats a good set up 2scoops! 8) Get more Ram tought!” 5:38:01 PM 9/10/03 “don't you have order today in order to still receive free shipping? I think that's not bad at all for the price. Dang, those things got cheap.” 5:38:37 PM 9/10/03 “eventually, but right now i do have plenty of other bills, including hospital bills. insurance isnt covering everything” 5:39:40 PM 9/10/03 eMachine “Go to CostCo & buy an eMachine. Everyone uses the same mother boards, hard drives, memory chips, etc., If you spend more $$ than that you're simply paying for sombody's marketing & advertising budget.” 5:40:30 PM 9/10/03 “im pretty psyched about the free burner. oh and i forgot the free shipping (ends today). and since i already have a sweet monitor (youre so jealous, cmb), i can afford to get the wireless keyboard and mouse.” 5:42:04 PM 9/10/03 “do they have a website?” 5:44:41 PM 9/10/03 “dude,539 is a lot especially for celeron...You usually can get that set up for 399 or 349...Dont worry about the free shipping that happens 2x/month.Cdrw are like 30 bux now so dont think yer gettin a whale of a deal. Also my dell came with cdrw+dvd palyer w/60gb harddrive. The only thing lacking is my 128ram.Things slow down a lot if im using a graphics program-macromedia -and have 4 or more ie windows open.Wait for a better deal.” 7:03:28 PM 9/10/03
