Wanderer, our present plan involves leaving Sonoma County (you might wonder how I got on the Hey Sacramento thread......) very early Friday (or late Thursday and sleeping in the permit office parking lot) and being at the permit office on Hwy 50 when they open. We can definitely meet up with you somewhere along the way and drop you at the trailhead, assuming you don't mind an early start. The permit office might be a good place since we all have to drop by there anyway.

Wannibp - Last time I was up Highway 50 they had signs up about the permit office near Placerville closing sometime this season. You might want to check that out before heading up.

Obi - I would love to see you again. But don't think I will fall for that "the llamas have my tent" trick this time!! I will probably head up Saturday morning, does that work for you? Let's refine things as the date nears (gosh, it is pretty near already, isn't it?)

can't make the bp'g trip but....
Too bad I can't make the trip. Already have tickets to a winery in Lodi to see the Temptations.

Geez, I'm not sure if I want to be there Sunday with a bunch of stinky ole bp'ers. I've never been one of those before. =;O Oh, I'll be there! You guys can just take a nice big wiff of me!

Will be great to meet more tt'ers! Gosh, and Obi wan might be there? Wow! Haven't seen you for two years! Is Rockman coming? Will be nice to see all the people again that I've already met too!

See you there! Noon, right? Not THIS Sunday but the next-9/28.

Permits and quotas
Pepper, thanks for the heads up. I will call the permit office in the morning.

I thought the quota system ended on Labor Day. I just checked on-line and it is effective until October.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/deso/permit.html

Check out the Quota List and the Quota Map. Rockbound Pass only allows 3 people who do not have advance reservations. Island, which is zoned with Twin, allows 10.

Looks like we may all be sleeping in that parking lot and fighting to be first to the door!

Dunk, look up Mt. Price in Summit.post.com. You'll be passing right by Price, and Summitpost describes routes up Price from Clyde and Island. We can wave at each other from our respective peaks -- I want to do Little Pyramid. Maybe we'll see you at dinner time Sat night.

Permit pick-up location changed
A gazillion thank-you's to Pepper!

The Camino permit office IS closed.

Permits can be picked up at the Pacific Ranger Station (I think that's what she called it). Go west on Hwy 50 for 11 miles past the Camino location. Turn left and cross the hwy at Mill Run Road, a little hard-to-see road. The office is right there and opens at 8 AM. The phone lady said to watch for Sly Park and go 3 miles further to Mill Run Road.

Pepper, you're a life saver :-)

Wilderness Permits
Hey, I just got a permit for 4 people, and they are faxing it to me right now. Anyone interested? I have room for three on the permit. I called (530) 543-2647 to get the permit. It is the Forest Service number.

Wannabp, I've summited Price from the Grouse / Hemlock / Smith Lks route and it was a fun climb. I'll check the report from Clyde / Aloha to see if it's feasible.

My plan
Subject to change, of course.

1. Leave Sacramento around 3:00 Friday afternoon. (I REALLY try to beat the traffic out of town, especially on a Friday headed to the mountains).

(If anyone wants a ride up, pls let me know, I have plenty of room in my gas-guzzling, environment-polluting SUV!!)

2. Head to Wright's Lake CG, camp there Friday night. (I like to sleep one night at a higher elevation before I hike, I'm paranoid due to an earlier Altitude Sicknesss experience)
Anyone else who wants to hook up Fri Nite, we could do a campfire / party thing Fri nite!

3. Sat A.M head to Schmidell Lake for TROUT! Good fishing lake, I've had a lot of luck there in the past & I want to get in some more trout fishing before it gets too cold.

4. Sunday, get up early, head back down Rockbound Trail to Wright's Lake TH so I can get back to Sacramento in time to drink w my fellow TT'rs.

tahoe - what are the specifics of your permit? I will probably be at the Wright's Lake trailhead Saturday 10ish? If Obi ends up finding his tent and coming up I will wait and ride with him. I am looking at just hiking up to Island Lake to meet up with wannabp etc.

Looks like my opportunities to meet y'all on the trail are diminishing (timing off by a couple days - it's the curse of the Th-Sa weekend). I might back out of this one and head up to the Trinity Alps and hook up with some Oregon TT'ers. I believe they're goin' into Caribou.

pepperdog,
4 persons, in at Wrights Lake on Sat the 27th, staying at Island Lake, out on Sun the 28th. Besides myself, there are three vacancies on the permit.
Due to time constraints, I am doing the same as you. Hike to Island Lake on Saturday, meet folks, spend night, hike back to Wrights Lake on Sunday. I could meet you at the trailhead around 10, no problem.

We meet back up Sunday afternoon at Chevy's on the River & WE DRINK!

Sounds OK to me>>>>

Dunk - #$%@
I can't take that much time off, Bailing on Friday was pushing it for me, now that Tahoe can't come on Friday I probaly will only take the afternoon off, just so I can beat the traffic.

I guess I shouldn't b!tch if I get to at least chase trout in Desolation, though.

Tahoe, thanks for the permit offer. I won't know our group size until Monday, but 4 are confirmed and 3 not likely's may come. The back of my environmentally friendly Honda Pilot makes out into a comfy bed, so we'll be fine sleeping at the permit office.

Does anyone in this group fall into the "dogs belong in the backyard, not the wilderness" clan? It would make my life much easier if one or two could come with me.

Pepper, I don't mind if your dog or dogs come. I assume they don't jump up on tents or anything problematic. I don't really know about the rest of my group, but I expect they will just go along with whatever is happening. Everyone is just focused on being able to have a weekend trip in a beautiful place.

I hope Chevy's has drinks as stiff as John Ritter.

I'm going to be in the Mt Shasta area that weekend... How long are you folks gonna be drinking? I might be back in town by 2 pm. That will be fun! Me sober. You been drinking hard for 2 hours.

It would be good to meet up with more folks from the board in the Sac area.

I'd imagine us non-hikers would be there around noonish. The "hikers" around 2 or 3ish. I'm just pulling times out of my arse, though.

Phaedy, wanna get together and watch some ball before everyone arrives? I'll bring the face paint and giant foam fingers!

Rockman, Landscaper and I are going again Oct 10 - 12.

This will be only the second bp trip for my co-worker who is coming, but I figure there are a lot of cross country options so people can spread out and do their own thing on Sat, depending on their energy/ability level.

You're welcome to join us then if you want. Sorry about your relative.
