Goat CurryView Messages“At the risk of starting a "what I had for lunch" thread, three of the guys I work with are from India, and took me out for lunch yesterday. I'd never had goat before. It tastes like lamb, but a little sweeter.” 9:10:37 AM 9/12/03 “We've got some Indian people here for a couple of months, but they're all strict lacto-vegans. No goat curry for them. The only Indian restaurant we have in town is mediocre, apparently. But hey, I love it!” 9:12:19 AM 9/12/03 “Yeah, all of them are veggies too, but it was a buffet, and I figured I needed to try something a little different.” 9:14:34 AM 9/12/03 “I don't think the place here has ever had goat on the menu. Lamb, though, and that's really good. Tastes a lot like beef, but richer somehow.” 9:15:54 AM 9/12/03 “I disagree. Goat tastes like goat. I can't really compare it to any other meat I've had. I love Indian food.” 9:17:14 AM 9/12/03 “Gabrito. BBQ goat. Best I've had was in a small Texas Hill Country town, Cotton Spring or something like that. With Lone Star Longnecks buried elbow deep in ice.” 9:28:24 AM 9/12/03 “This may have been the first, but it won't be the last time. Goat's gooood.” 9:32:17 AM 9/12/03 “MMMMM Goat! Phaedrus (et al.), if you get a chance, don't miss Jamaican jerked goat, it's fabulous. Also, a méchoui of goat - goat (or lamb) roasted over an open fire and served with vegetable couscous is also out of this world. So much variety to munch on and so little time!” 9:32:35 AM 9/12/03 Jamaican hamburger “Curried goat in a corn wafer. Pretty tasty. Haven't had one in years.” 9:36:31 AM 9/12/03 “never had indian food yet. Always wanted to try though. No one in my family is brave enough. Now that we moved to SC I don't even know if we have a indian restaurant here.” 9:38:00 AM 9/12/03 “Gem, it's pretty good. Some stuff seems bland until you learn to recognize the tastes. I know that sounds strange, but it's true.” 9:39:28 AM 9/12/03 “I love jerk pork, gremlin. I'd imagine jerk goat is good too... Gemini, you need indian food. You just don't know how much.” 9:39:38 AM 9/12/03 “Indian food is the absolute BREAST!! i love it, i love it. my friend Cheryl is Guyanese, and her dad makes this awesome dish out of butternut squash, lots of spices, and a few shrimp (for flavor). sounds weird, but it is DA BOMB.” 9:52:41 AM 9/12/03 “You can do a lot with squash because it tends to absorb flavors. I've used acorn squash in spaghetti sauce, sauteed with some butter and garlic...yum...” 9:54:40 AM 9/12/03 try... “acorn squash with buter, cumin, curry, salt and pepper...steam the the squash, then melt the and mix the other ingrediants and then pour of the squash...yummy. I cook indian food all the time...and dehydrate the leftovers...nothing like curried chicken with peanuts on the trail...can't wait for backpacking season, to start my dehydration program again. Gonna make beef stroganoff this weekend, and dehydrate some.” 9:58:53 AM 9/12/03 “Goat is good stuff indeed. Love, love, love Indian food. Loved it so much I went and took a class. I make a mean curry. Now look what you've started. I must cook Indian tonight! Who wants to come?” 9:59:27 AM 9/12/03 “3 more hours to lunch! Where's that donut?” 9:59:52 AM 9/12/03 “ ”10:03:14 AM 9/12/03 “My preference in Indian food is lamb. Currently I'va had a thing for Saag Gosht. Highly spiced lamb cooked in creamed spinach. Don't forget the aloo paratha (Potato Filled Flat Bread)” 10:03:24 AM 9/12/03 “that reminds me, Pamster...i haven't seen any references by Artex lately to a "party in his mouth." LOL!!” 10:03:29 AM 9/12/03 “Gem, it's pretty good. Some stuff seems bland until you learn to recognize the tastes. I know that sounds strange, but it's true bitpusher 09:39:28 AM 09/12/03 You've been eating at the wrong curry house Bit :o)” 10:05:39 AM 9/12/03 “Wow, am I getting hungry. Lyra, can you post the recipe? I love squash and that sounds great. I've also been eating a lot of Greek cuisine. It's simple and delicious. Unfortuantely the 'Mediterranean Diet' is becoming a fad. I'm having marinated chicken kebobs, grilled vegetables and almond pilaf leftovers for lunch. I have this thing for imported olive oil because I know it's not genetically modified, unlike North American vegetable oils. (I hope I didn't start something there.)” 10:16:36 AM 9/12/03 “Agreed, I have never had bland Indian food.” 10:16:37 AM 9/12/03 “sure, i'll try to get her to send it to me, Gremlin! i've actually made it with her before, but can't remember how we did it. and that or the curry we make never tastes as good as her Dad's, no matter how hard we try to do it like he does!” 10:17:55 AM 9/12/03 “What can I say, some of the stuff is a little bland. None of what I've had at this place is hot like a good curry should be. Maybe that's why all the Indians say it's not that good. It's the only place in town, sigh...all the other Indians in town own Subways...” 10:23:09 AM 9/12/03 “No, I agree, Bit, some of the dals and yoghurt sauces are bland on purpose. They're supposed to be a contrast to the hot curries.” 10:36:42 AM 9/12/03 “I have a feeling some of this stuff is supposed to be hotter, but the owners don't want to kill the non-Indians who come into the place to eat.” 10:40:08 AM 9/12/03 bit, I picked up some awsome curry.. “at a vietnamese supply house in Memphis...it will knock your socks off!!! I love chicken & potatoe curry with onions. I toss in a little cumin too.” 10:47:17 AM 9/12/03 “You talking the spice? Or a prepared meal? There's a Korean grocery just down the street from me. Never been in there, but I bet they have a lot of good Asian stuff.” 10:49:00 AM 9/12/03 Just an aside, “For most of the peole at work, I am from another planet. Even my girlfriend sometimes does not understand a thing I say. There is the cultural thing, of course, I am an English as a second language teacher in a rural, French language high school. There are other things too, of course. Most of the people at work cannot imaging what my week-ends are like - they don't know rugby, can't understand things like FYAO and don't even know there are hungry trout in the streams around the school. Anyhoo, I was driving home (home is an old [1830],country school house with orchards and forest all aroung - just outside of the tiny hamlet of Rockburn with its wonderful pub that my colleagues don't even know exitsts)from my buddy's farm and passed a farm with (goat) kids, lambs, quail eggs, ducks etc. for sale and remarked to my girlfriend that I'd be buying two lambs and a kid in the spring. Her eyes got as big as her head and she started telling my I was crazy and how would I find the time to take care of them given my lifestyle. 'You don't understand,' I answered, 'I'm not going to take care of them, I'm going to butcher them and put them in the freezer.' She just shook her head. I was having a beer at my buddy's yesterday and we watched the fog roll slowly over his front fields. 'Time to kill something.' we both said. Last year he was five minutes late for snow goose hunting. 'Where ya been?' I asked him. 'Got road kill.' he answered. Back from goose hunting, he was cutting up the deer on the tailgate while I plucked the geese (snows are a bit¢h to pluck). 'You know,' I said, 'I'm thinking of changing into an eccentric old hermit.' After a moment, 'Watcha gonna change?' he asked. Just wanted to share and lighten up the board. God bless. Doug” 10:49:24 AM 9/12/03 “Hey bit, next time you go in ask them to prepare your food like they would serve it in India. I did that once and it was a huge difference.” 10:59:37 AM 9/12/03 “I was once told that they won't do it for Europeans. I insisted and they dood it. Wow, even the kitchen people came out to watch. I had tears rolling down my face and my lips were numb for days. It was a great experience.” 11:13:45 AM 9/12/03 “I was once told that they won't do it for Europeans. I insisted and they dood it. Wow, even the kitchen people came out to watch. I had tears rolling down my face and my lips were numb for days. It was a great experience.” 11:13:46 AM 9/12/03 “Y'all did it, I'm going Indian today!” 11:17:03 AM 9/12/03 “Don't jerk your pork, you'll go blind” 11:36:41 AM 9/12/03 “We need a trip report bit.” 11:38:03 AM 9/12/03 “OK I just got back. First, I had some of the green stuff, some of the yellow-ish orange stuff (that has potatoes in it) and some red stuff. That was all pretty good. Then, I went back and got some red stuff with chicken in it, some of the lamb with peas, and some of the brown stuff that has chickpeas in it. Both times with the plain white basmati rice. It was delicious, but none of it was very hot.” 12:43:50 PM 9/12/03 “Hrmmm... The place they took me pretty much catered to Indians, and the food was nice and hot.” 12:52:14 PM 9/12/03 “Well, I do live in the Deep South, Phaed. They have to make it more palatable for us poor white boys! It's a buffet, too, so the stuff is all pretty middle-of-the-road. I'm guessing, although I have never been there in the evening, that it's much better then.” 12:59:29 PM 9/12/03 “Nonetheless, good food is good food, and you can always ask for a side of hot lime teeka.” 1:02:56 PM 9/12/03 “Hot lime teeka, huh? I'll have to ask for it next time.” 1:04:13 PM 9/12/03 “I had barbequed goat once, I wasn't very impressed. It was pretty dry and bland. And bit's right about India House, it really blows. There was this really outstanding Indian restaurant in Costa Mesa...” 1:06:41 PM 9/12/03 “Didja take any pictures?” 1:07:42 PM 9/12/03 “My town has a large Indian population and dozens of restaurants but my wife doesn’t like spicy food. 8( No goat dish is as good as a goat head taco.” 1:09:37 PM 9/12/03 “goat HEAD taco?” 1:11:08 PM 9/12/03 Pheaddy “I'm sorry I had you pegged all wrong, 1st your a guy and secondly you're not the sheep connoisseur I thought you were.” 1:29:22 PM 9/12/03 “We're even, then, rabbit. I had originally thought you were a guy, too.” 1:33:06 PM 9/12/03 goat HEAD taco? “I don't know if they sell them in the tourist areas, but in central Mexico (Michoacan anyway) they sell tacos made from goat's heads - specifically face meat I think. The markets had stands with cow and goat heads for sale - many with their tongues hanging out. I could post some photos on webshots.” 1:40:30 PM 9/12/03 “Ahhh. I've heard of that. Never tried, it, but you say it's good?” 1:44:44 PM 9/12/03 “Si!” 1:48:25 PM 9/12/03
