We may not have much "culture" but...
...as I left campus on our circle drive last evening, I stopped on the s-curve between the welding/firefighting lab building and the childcare center to let an 8-point buck cross.

A magnificent counterbalance to a day spent indoors being very task oriented.

I think a major side benefit to most peoples jobs on this board is that our bosses haven't taken our internet priveleges away!

No kidding switchback.

We all get busted at once and Matt will be left here alone.

Well,,,,maybe Ice Tea will still be here.

Pekka, I would expect you to call the ancillary benefits... But perhaps I'm being pedantic ;)

pekka - cool.

Once many years ago I saw a doe on the grass just outside the entrance to the engineering building. Kind of surprising for Pomona, California, but I guess we are on a wildlife corridor of some sort.

Wow Phaed, great use of the word pedantic. Don't hear that word much. U r a smarty, aren't ya? 8)

Lol, Phaedrus; it's likely the image of that buck -- standing at the road edge in his prime, antlers polished clean of summer's velvet -- overrode my pedantic tendencies as I wrote about it. Very primal creature -- helps me get my verbal feet back on the ground.

Nigal, Mutt used the word erudition in a post directed at me yesterday.

Of course, it was wrapped in an insult. :)

Very good, Pekka. That's the Pekka we all know and love.

Phil, my image of Pomona comes from Kem Nunn's novel, Pomona Queen (I think I have the title right).

I'm very fortunate to be on a campus that's set in the forest at the edge of a northwoods lake. Excellent habitat made even better by no hunting pressure -- however, I have seen deer hit and killed at the very spot the buck was crossing. Once I was in a meeting in the conference room in my building -- one whole wall is glass panels looking out into the woods between the building and the lake. As others were following the agenda, I was watching a 6-point buck sniffing scent trails among the trees.

We haven't had a bear on campus in awhile (that we know of), though I have seen two while driving in the nearby region this summer.

gotcha phaedrus!

I resigned from Lovelace and took a couple of days off before I start at UNM. :-D

On Monday I have to go to the brand new SUB to get my Lobo card. Maybe I'll go by way of the Duck Pond. I'm not going to ride my bike to work to start, but I think I'll keep one at my office. Gym, pool, Popejoy, two for one football and basketball tickets, libraries, Maxwell, 8 credit hours a year...

I saw a deer once at the place I last worked. It was in a little green area the ran along a stream.

My work perk is that I've toured the Taos Overlook Acquisition Project for each of the 4 phases. Pathman might know of this one, ~2800 acres saved from the golf courses and wave of red tile roofs. Also, Ute Mountain acquisition ~14K acres with an elk herd. And this week I walk back and forth to work past the White House.

Ho Hum, another day at the mill.
