“Totally agreed. Outside Magazine kicks Anna Nicole Smith-sized arse. I love it, and think it's the best mag in the world. I have a 3-year subcription, and don't ever plan on letting it run out. The articles are fantastic and very inspiring. Backpacker mag sucks IMO, unless you're new to the sport. Otherwise, it's very redundant.

My other mag subscriptions:
Sea Kayaker (also a great mag)
National Geographic Adventurer (pretty good, but too many pictures and not enough articles)
PC Gamer (video games are my guilty pleasure)”

The NG Adveture mag is good too. I had to buy backpacker mag. because my nieces plan didn't sell stuff, maxim or playboy! Go figure!”

“That is a killer game. I'm overcoming my addiction to Star Wars Galaxies for the moment. I've actually been in a video gaming lull right now, but perhaps that's a good thing.

And another point about Outside Magazine, I really like how it covers not just backpacking, but ALL adventure-related sports and expeditions. Any serious backpacker can usually relate to pretty much everything they cover in one way or another.”

“True! I especially like the fitness articles. I actually did the workout plan that they published last year.... It worked really well, and got me in shape for my failed adventure race.

“I love Outside Magazine. Other subscriptions have come and gone, including Backpacker, but Outside has stayed a mainstay of my reading.

I love the mix of non-USA cultural stories and the stuff like the kid who has devoted his career to pulling trash out of the Mississippi. How about the story of bog races over in GB.....yuck, but cool.

And how about the story about the Kashmir conflict where 9 out of 10 (IIRC) deaths are the result of mountaineering accidents and not bullets, mortars, etc. Crazy stuff.”

“I like NG Adventure. After a year of BP, I'm starting to agree with Artex on the redundancy. There's rarely an article in there on techniques, just the little 3 sentence tip things occasionally. And while a magazine of all gear all the time would get boring, I wish they'd focus a little more on that and a little less on Alaska every other issue.

“The best things I like about NG Adventure are the book reviews and the Robert Young Pelton articles and his traveler section. I also like the trip on a shoe string feature. Sea kayaking in the Bahamas for a grand? Cool!”

“My dad got me a subscription to Outside Magazine for Christmas. I have been enjoying it.”

“Highlights is an awesome mag. I especially dig the drawings where you have to find the hidden items.”

“I have a subscription to Backpacker and end up buying NGA and Outside off the newstand. I also get Climbing and Rock&Ice about once every 3 months.

Although they tout expensive gear and the articles are fairly limited in scope - I do still very much look forward to getting it in the mail. I usually read through it the first day I have it.”

I used to get Backpacker but never bothered to renew after one year. I pick it up at the newstand when I remember to.I also used to hate Outside. Now I've come around and am enjoying it and NGE.

I agree with Stickman Walking, whats up with BPers constant woody over Alaska? I'd love to go there and all but I'm starting to think they are just justifing the company paying for trips to an expensive destination for there writers own self gratificaion.”

“Well, all I can tell you is that it's on the rack at REI, the cover looks great but everytime I look at the table of contents it seems more like a fashion mag.

I think there's another one called Dandelion or something too.

Next time I go I'll buy a copy and give a review.”

“The September issue of 'Outside' is awesome, particularly Maria Coffey's article, 'The Survivors'. The mag. is sometimes a little uneven, but then only Kraft cheese and its equivalents are always the same.

I buy 'Climbing' when it has stuff on alpinism and 'Scirntific American' or 'The Sciences' when there's an article that intersts me. I used to buy 'Harper's' and 'Atlantic' regularly and will pick one up once in a while.”

The quality of writing goes up and down depending on who they attract as contributors . . .but generally some of the best stuff on the market.

I read every issue cover to cover and look forward to the next.

Follow the exercise programs with some consistency just to lend structure to what I am doing.

“Outside mag...I saw it for the first time the other day when I was on my lunch break at work. Someone had left an old mag on the table. Well I started reading about unsolved mysteries in the wilderness and was HOOKED. I stole the mag and read it all day when the bosses wern't looking! :)”

“my mom gets "Real Simple," laqtis. the thing i've noticed about that magazine, is that it makes up all these high-maintenance things that no one i know ever does, and then figures out slightly-less-fussy ways to do them. LOL!”

“Opie - I think Galaxies is pretty cool. They're supposed to add-on vehicles soon, and an expansion pack will add space flight. There have been a good amount of complaints about the current version because all you can do is walk around, but that will soon change. It costs 10 bucks a month to play though. But interacting with others is very cool, and overall it's about as addicting as crack.”

“Vice City is the coolest game I have ever played. I have pretty much figured out all of the levels (I think) I am stuck in one part but there is so many fun things you can do. I like getting my wanted level up as high as possible and then see how long I can survive.”

“I like Backpacker just for the destinations. I would not know about places to hike if it was not for that Mag. Outsider seems to take you to places that are just way to expensive and not very primitive. I get them both and read them both. I did not liek National Geographic Adventure.”
