U.S. putting 'French' back in fries?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- To get international help to rebuild Iraq, Congress may have to eat some French fries and French toast, according to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

Saying it is time to put aside differences with France, the Texas Democrat circulated a letter on Monday urging the U.S. House of Representatives to put back the word "French" in fries and toast on House cafeteria and dining hall menus.

Lawmakers ordered them renamed "Freedom" fries and "Freedom" toast last spring, reflecting anger at France for its opposition to the U.S.-led war to topple Saddam Hussein as Iraq's president.

But times have changed, Jackson Lee said, and now the Washington is trying to get France and other members of the United Nations to contribute money and troops to help stabilize Iraq and rebuild its devastated infrastructure.

"President Bush is now urging that all parties put aside 'past bickering,'" she said in her letter.

"A symbolic start to that effort" would be reinstating foods on the House menus "with their traditional 'American' names -- French toast and French fries."

Rep. Bob Ney, head of the House Administration Committee, ordered the changes in March.

The Ohio Republican took the action at the suggestion of Rep. Walter Jones, a North Carolina Republican.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas
and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we
shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we
shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall
fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,,,,

Churchill wasn't Texan just like you're not American.

Briar, I'll put my record on my duty and responsibility toward my county side by side with anyone's.

Just because you're an idealogue without a lick of common sense doesn't mean anyone who disagrees with you isn't an American.

There is no such thing as common sense,,
Thats your,,, error. That vain attempt at trying to belittle, a common frenchy debate tactic, really makes you shine like the pumpous frenchy assmuncher,, you really are. No need to put your words in my mouth.

BTW,,,,, war is war. I see no diff when my fellow Americans are or have gone off to fight for the freedom of others, neither back then or now,,, no matter the oppressive force. Its ugly and necessary at times. Is France or the U.N. to carry the torch??

Well,,,, you're not American are you??

Yes, Briar - if you were just mistaken - I AM American, and your pathetic attempt at debate wouldn't pass muster in a junior high special ed class for English as a second language.

I honestly don't think you can talk to anyone that disagrees with you without trying to belittle them. You're a POW, pheaddy.

So military experience is your dividing factor like you assume my " idealogue without a lick of common sense doesn't mean anyone who disagrees with you(me) isn't an American."

See its easy to put words in anothers mouth.

If I went on the offensive, it's because you told me I wasn't an American. Judging from some of your past posts, I'd say it's not a far stretch to assume that you were speaking from an idealogical standpoint rather than just being ignorant about my actual status.

Either way, though.

Point of information: England had the support of their allies.

Inspite of the "Patriot Act" I still have some Constitutional Freedoms, like the Freedom of Speech. So, if I critcize this administration it doesn't mean I gave up my rights as an American.

WHO DO YOU KNOW ...
that is French? I know plenty of them and none are what you people describe in the past posts. Anyone who would stereotype others like you people have done in this thread certainly don't deserve to live in our great country. Every leader and government has its flaws, French gov. decided not to take our side on this as did several other nations. Bush and his croonies pushed for this and they got it, I however support Bush so don't go thinking I don't. I am just very interested in seeing how we come out of this. If you want to curse the French go some place else. My wife is French and I will send her to kick your ass if need be.

Hey, Shep, this has all been pointed out to the French-bashers. Some people just can't help themselves, I am convinced. It probably feels so good to them to write off an entire country. I would bet that not many of them either know any French citizens or have been to France.
And, in all fairness, some of the jokes are funny.

The French have a long history of collaboration with tyrants.
One would think their association with Hitler in WW II would have
prompted some reforms -- but no! Jacques Ch-Iraq's allegiance
to Saddam Hussein and his Ba'athist henchmen continues even
after Saddam's deposition, which is to say, the French continue
to support attacks by Saddam's loyalists against American and
allied liberators in Iraq. We encourage you to avoid purchasing
any consumer goods labeled "Product of France," thus avoiding
any support for those who would provide aid and comfort enemy.

Some companies listed below are American-based with American
employees. To avoid French products without compromising American
family incomes, we ask you to target only consumer goods labeled
"Product of France" -- products actually made on French soil.
