Few years back, i evaced for a storm that came onshore as a Cat 2, declining from a 3 in doing so. Then a few weeks later stayed for one that was starting out as a 2, but strenghened to a 3 surprising everyone. Not fun. I wouldn't wanna do it again. Yall all stay safe down there.” 12:54:07 PM 9/05/08 “so what does one wear to a hurrican party?” The Dutchess of Road Kill 1:39:20 PM 9/05/08 down in Mobile we wear as little as possible...power goes out...90 degrees + outside....after Katrina & without power for 6 days ( we were blessed it wasn't longer) I wore my nylon kayaking shorts, a bikini top & tank top...& sprayed myself with the water hose periodicly... ...ya'll stay safe!!!!” 2:01:48 PM 9/05/08 2:03:04 PM 9/05/08 “I'll be spending the night at the office, but tomorrow I am taking my daughters and friends to a one day anime convention in Fayetteville (as long as its still on). I love hurricanes. They are an awesome thing to stand in the middle of and just let mother earth speak to you.” 3:08:20 PM 9/05/08 “thats true hyway, going out and standing directly in the eye and looking up to crystal clear starry skies was an awesome experience. experienceing the fierceness of a storm like that is awe inspiring, but still i don't think i wanna do it more than once.” 3:23:29 PM 9/05/08 “Breezey and raining in Dur-ham. We'll see what Hanna has in store overnight. I've got the grand and almost grand kids tomorrow so I stocked up on modeling clay and finger paint to keep the little boogers entertained if the power goes. The almost grand's name is Hanna, age seven, she thinks it's great that there is a hurricane named after her.” 3:31:05 PM 9/05/08 “http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200809_model.html#a_topad ....today they show Ike coming into the gulf...I am as pepared as I was 2 storms ago.... ...hold on East Coasters!!!!!” 5:07:19 AM 9/06/08 “I don't like Ike... I really hoped Hanna would give us some much needed rain. THe edge of the rain systems passed just along the eastern border of Mecklenberg county. I live near the western edge. Nary a drop, darnit.” 5:29:41 AM 9/06/08 “wish I could say that treebait - its been pouring here for the last few hours” 6:03:28 AM 9/06/08 “Western NC is still in a very bad drought.” 6:14:19 AM 9/06/08 “Raining for the last 24 and WINDY here in Dur-ham. Yep, Hanna has pumped more Dur into the air.” 6:28:52 AM 9/06/08 “YIKES.... trying to find a way to keep my little new water pond with baby fish safe :( 40 to 60 winds 4 to 6 inch rain :( hold on tight little ones...” 7:18:47 AM 9/06/08 “Everything turned out ok around my neck of the woods. Had a few tree limbs down, loss of power for about 4 hours and some minor fence damage but nothing serious.” 7:54:28 AM 9/06/08 “Where are you located Dutchess and mildbill? My lil garden pond has overflowed. At least it got rid of the skeeters. No fish fatalities yet.” 7:59:46 AM 9/06/08 “I am about 35 miles south of Wilmington and about 35 miles north of Myrtle Beach.” 8:25:56 AM 9/06/08 “Cripes, a gallon of paint and a pound of scrap paper, cup cake paper and tongue depessors later the kids are bored and whinney and it's only 1:00! Valume anyone? Not for me, for the kids (just kidding). Okay, We'll make cupcakes now...” 10:11:57 AM 9/06/08 “two words, Duck tape.” 11:31:38 AM 9/06/08 “Great thought!!! An hour in the mud puddles and the flooded sand box took care of the whinnies. Filthy tired kids are a good thing. We're doing Sponge Bob and cupcakes now. Their Moms are going to kill me. God, it's good to be the grandparent! Mooohaaaaa! Send em home filthy and sugared up!” 12:31:42 PM 9/06/08 “Pamster! Glad you made it through OK. NH is supposed to get some heavy rain, but that's about it. I love living in New Hamster!” 3:25:49 PM 9/06/08 “Hey Ski. We miss you in NC. Send some snow our way this winter. We haven't had a good one since you moved north!!” 5:44:10 PM 9/07/08 “we survied~! we were going to a concert at a friends house but they had to change the location because of Hanna, then while we were getting lost in the area (dodging freaking falling trees) we get a call. the concert has been moved due to LARGE TREE falling on the club house and just missing the lead Singer, and it pulled the wires down and landed on the guys new truck! the couple lost a lot of money. but the band played on in a small pub! fish are doing fine! now for Ike.....” 6:26:59 AM 9/08/08 “no word from my brother and his cell phone still does not work. regardless, i am still not worried. his wife and kids are in mississippi (or were) and would have called if something was wrong.” 6:29:17 AM 9/08/08 “Ike heading to Texas....” 2:57:28 AM 9/09/08 “http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200809_sat.html#a_topad ...looks like we will get a bunch of storms out of Ike here on the coast...!!!! ...look out Texas!!!!!!” 2:41:21 AM 9/11/08 “ ![]() Be careful Y2. It's been several years since a storm has hit Austin and lots of trees will be downed if Ike hits, even as far inland as you. I hope y'all are not without power for long.” 2:25:28 PM 9/11/08 “we have had high surf all day.” 6:06:29 PM 9/11/08 “http://www.myfoxgulfcoast.com/myfox/ Ike is causing trouble already!!! ..I hope my trip to Destin this weekend isn't ruined!!!!” 2:44:22 AM 9/12/08 “So Ike came through my area and was still packing 70+ mph winds. The place is a mess. I've been standing on my roof with a bed sheet sign saying, "Help me!" for a day and half. When the fukc is FEMA gonna get here to pick up all these sticks from yard?” 9:00:21 AM 9/15/08 “LOL, 100 mph winds were recorded at the indianapolis airport...many of my coworkers are with out power, at least that's what they said when they crawled in late this morning ;)” 9:31:19 AM 9/15/08 “Anyone heard from SC?” 6:57:14 PM 9/15/08 1:24:11 PM 9/17/08 “wow...very sad.....I love this site..I visit it everyday!!!” 4:24:48 PM 9/17/08 “its official...we are Scre#ed this year. Hurricane center is predicting only 6 so this should be a crappy year (LOL). They have predicted the end of the world the last couple of years and gotten little if anything...so I am worried the opposite is true. STOVE, the farm has spare room.” 1:58:19 PM 4/07/09 “This is why I like living inland. 8D” 2:02:08 PM 4/07/09 10:19:09 PM 5/22/09 “I knew something was squirrely when the radar began showing rainclouds coming from the East instead of the West a few days ago. And what's up with that designation.... "Invest 90"? Based on 0600 utc surface analysis and satellite imagery through 1015 UTC. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATWDAT+shtml/231144.shtml? ...special feature... A 1004 mb surface low is located near 30n89w...or about 75 nm South of Mobile Alabama. A surface trough extends from the surface low to the NW Yucatan Peninsula near 21N90W. Low level convergence near the surface low... along with diffluence associated with a middle to upper level trough axis across the central Gulf are supporting numerous showers and scattered tstms across the Gulf N of 26N E of 90W.... including the NE Gulf coast. The surface low is forecast to move NNW during the next 24 hours and locate inland over swrn Mississippi. However... Additional development of this system is possible... and a tropical depression could form before the low moves inland over the nrn Gulf coast later today. Regardless of development... Heavy rains and occasionally gusty winds are expected along portions of the nrn Gulf coast through the remainder of Saturday. Interests in this area should monitor the progress of the system.” 5:57:06 AM 5/23/09 “they call them "Invest" & a # before they become a tropical depression..... ...it rained all night * & most of morning...just sprinkles now....not too much wind!!!” 11:45:33 AM 5/23/09 “Never heard that one before.... and 'invest' already has a meaning which is about as far from meteorology as you can get, LOL I've heard 'tropical low' used before they become a 'tropical depression'.... and a tropical depression will get a number designation like 'TD2', 'TD4' etc. But then again, we're like 150 miles from the coast so we don't follow these things as closely. a-Ha ---- http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutgloss.shtml Invest: A weather system for which a tropical cyclone forecast center (NHC, CPHC, or JTWC) is interested in collecting specialized data sets (e.g., microwave imagery) and/or running model guidance. Once a system has been designated as an invest, data collection and processing is initiated on a number of government and academic web sites, including the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (UW-CIMSS). The designation of a system as an invest does not correspond to any particular likelihood of development of the system into a tropical cyclone; operational products such as the Tropical Weather Outlook or the JTWC/TCFA should be consulted for this purpose. http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=745&tstamp=200708 What is an "Invest? When a National Hurricane Center forecaster sees a tropical disturbance that may be a threat to develop into a tropical depression, the forecaster may label the disturbance an "Invest" and give it a tracking identification number. There is no formal definition of what qualifies as an "Invest". Declaring an "Invest" is merely done so that a set of forecasting aids like computer model track forecasts can be generated for the disturbance. The "Invest" is given a number 90-99, followed by a single letter corresponding to the ocean basin--"L" for the Atlantic, or "E" for the Eastern Pacific. Other warning agencies assign "Invests" for the other ocean basins--"W" for the Western Pacific, "A" for the Arabian Sea, etc. They still don't give an etymology ---- I'm thinking it's 'short' for some form of 'Investigate' or 'Investigation'. The 90-number designation is still a mystery, perhaps a random choice.” 12:19:31 PM 5/23/09 “I noticed that various weather websites started using the "invest" last year. Whatever.” 1:32:25 PM 5/23/09 “I upped my flood insurance, so I'm all set for the 'season'.” 2:27:56 PM 5/23/09 “Ladies and gentlemen....in the past few years the hurricane predictions have been for an almost Apocolyptical overrun (following inline to the Envirowacko theories) in reality most have been a miserable bust. This year they are predicting...NEAR NORMAL. Meaning, of course...we are most likely going to be assaulted by hurricanes all year (LOL). Just get ready. TD 1 the first monster of the season is out there...off the coast of the North East..packing winds of 30 mph it is expected to...oh die...sorry never mind. last edited: 5/29/09 7:59:15 AM” 7:57:14 AM 5/29/09 “TS Andres has fired up.” 10:37:22 AM 6/22/09 “Treebait, it's not nice to gloat. ;-)” 10:38:53 AM 6/22/09 “I'm not gloating. Honest. Anyways, Andres is in the Pacific. last edited: 6/22/09 10:31:51 AM” 10:39:35 AM 6/22/09 “You are late Treebeard, I accurately predicted a disasterous year (LOL) based soley on the fact that the dweebs at NHS predictd a mild year (LOL).” 12:15:26 PM 6/22/09 “drinking again already XL?” 12:19:51 PM 6/22/09 “Roam...think about it....(I know this is hard for you) but the past three or four years since Katrina they have predicted DISASTER on a biblical level (each year I predicted pupfkah...who was right? AHEM....” 1:42:19 PM 6/22/09 “nothing to think about #&%!$ - maybe you should re-read (i know this is hard for you)who your post was addressed to.” 1:49:09 PM 6/22/09 “Hey XL, learn to read.” 7:23:07 AM 6/23/09 “He loves the smell of burning crack in the morning.” 7:34:57 AM 6/23/09 Jump to Page << prev
