“dang things are too hard to predict which adds to their scariness. Few years back, i evaced for a storm that came onshore as a Cat 2, declining from a 3 in doing so. Then a few weeks later stayed for one that was starting out as a 2, but strenghened to a 3 surprising everyone. Not fun. I wouldn't wanna do it again.

down in Mobile we wear as little as possible...power goes out...90 degrees + outside....after Katrina & without power for 6 days ( we were blessed it wasn't longer) I wore my nylon kayaking shorts, a bikini top & tank top...& sprayed myself with the water hose periodicly...

“I'll be spending the night at the office, but tomorrow I am taking my daughters and friends to a one day anime convention in Fayetteville (as long as its still on).

“Everything turned out ok around my neck of the woods. Had a few tree limbs down, loss of power for about 4 hours and some minor fence damage but nothing serious.”

we were going to a concert at a friends house but they had to change the location because of Hanna, then while we were getting lost in the area (dodging freaking falling trees) we get a call. the concert has been moved due to LARGE TREE falling on the club house and just missing the lead Singer, and it pulled the wires down and landed on the guys new truck!




the couple lost a lot of money. but the band played on in a small pub!

“So Ike came through my area and was still packing 70+ mph winds. The place is a mess. I've been standing on my roof with a bed sheet sign saying, "Help me!" for a day and half. When the fukc is FEMA gonna get here to pick up all these sticks from yard?”

They have predicted the end of the world the last couple of years and gotten little if anything...so I am worried the opposite is true.

A 1004 mb surface low is located near 30n89w...or about 75 nm South of Mobile Alabama. A surface trough extends from the surface low to the NW Yucatan Peninsula near 21N90W. Low level convergence near the surface low... along with diffluence associated with a middle to upper level trough axis across the central Gulf are supporting numerous showers and scattered tstms across the Gulf N of 26N E of 90W.... including the NE Gulf coast. The surface low is forecast to move NNW during the next 24 hours and locate inland over swrn Mississippi. However... Additional development of this system is possible... and a tropical depression could form before the low moves inland over the nrn Gulf coast later today. Regardless of development... Heavy rains and occasionally gusty winds are expected along portions of the nrn Gulf coast through the remainder of Saturday. Interests in this area should monitor the progress of the system.”

I've heard 'tropical low' used before they become a 'tropical depression'.... and a tropical depression will get a number designation like 'TD2', 'TD4' etc.

But then again, we're like 150 miles from the coast so we don't follow these things as closely.

A weather system for which a tropical cyclone forecast center (NHC, CPHC, or JTWC) is interested in collecting specialized data sets (e.g., microwave imagery) and/or running model guidance. Once a system has been designated as an invest, data collection and processing is initiated on a number of government and academic web sites, including the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (UW-CIMSS). What is an "Invest?
When a National Hurricane Center forecaster sees a tropical disturbance that may be a threat to develop into a tropical depression, the forecaster may label the disturbance an "Invest" and give it a tracking identification number. There is no formal definition of what qualifies as an "Invest". Declaring an "Invest" is merely done so that a set of forecasting aids like computer model track forecasts can be generated for the disturbance. The "Invest" is given a number 90-99, followed by a single letter corresponding to the ocean basin--"L" for the Atlantic, or "E" for the Eastern Pacific. Other warning agencies assign "Invests" for the other ocean basins--"W" for the Western Pacific, "A" for the Arabian Sea, etc.


They still don't give an etymology ---- I'm thinking it's 'short' for some form of 'Investigate' or 'Investigation'. The 90-number designation is still a mystery, perhaps a random choice.”

This year they are predicting...NEAR NORMAL. Meaning, of course...we are most likely going to be assaulted by hurricanes all year (LOL).

Just get ready.

TD 1 the first monster of the season is out there...off the coast of the North East..packing winds of 30 mph it is expected to...oh die...sorry never mind.
