I heard somewhere that Bush went to Camp Comfortable for the weekend. You mean he just went up there to get away from the storm? Jeez Louise!

No. It was already planned. They just moved it up a day or two.

We just had leaves and small branches down, though some of our neighbors lost big branches. We have been hearing chainsaws all day. We went for a walk on a nearby bike path and did quite a bit of clearing as we went. We sawed through about 4 trees with a hand saw and moved a lot of small branches. A lot of the area has no power, but we got lucky this time. Fairfax County has no water (treatment plant lost power) and Alexandria and parts of Baltimore are completely flooded. So it wasn't a complete no show, just not as bad as they hyped it. I did enjoy the unexpected holiday. Can't go to work if there's no transportation, and given the state of some of the roads, I wouldn't drive downtown for anything. Better leave it to the police and power companies.

"Mutt does have somewhat of a point about Federal (not private) insurance programs which cover BEACH FRONT homes, often for big bucks. We are subsidizing some rich cat's vacation home/business property, and we (the little guy) has to buy beach tags to take our kids to frolic in the ocean.

(Where the he|| is Strathmere?)"
flyguy6x

There is an element of truth in that Limpy, but that was not what Mutt said. He said what he said in response to my post about Creek Dancer, who lives in Richmond, not on the oceanfront. And I don't think CD's insurance policy is of the type that would be subsidized by the feds anyway. It would not be flood insurance for a tree falling onto cars and a sailboat her kid saved up money for by cutting lawns. As usual, Mutt was trying to make me look bad and he shot himself in the foot. He's got dead aim that way.

As for beachfront properties, yes, we know only pay through flood insurance subsidies, but then they charge us outrageous rates to rent them. But the neat thing is, on barrier islands, it's all just temporary. They're all on a one-way trip into the ocean.

I stayed at a place on the OBX in 99 that had been a block away from the ocean before Floyd, but post Floyd it was one beach house removed from the surf. By now it must be flotsam.

Space Weather News for Sept. 19, 2003

HURRICANE HALOS: As Hurricane Isabel advanced on North America yesterday sky watchers in New England saw some unusually vivid "halos and dogs" around the Sun. Clouds on the leading edge of storm fronts often produce
such effects--and they were much in evidence ahead of Isabel. Visit
SpaceWeather.com for photos.

up here there were heavy winds, fallen branches, lots of debris on the roads, passing showers. power has been going on and off.

it was really cool seeing the clouds move so quickly through the air.

MSNBC is reporting that Jennette's Pier is gone, as it Route 12 on Hatteras, along with scads of homes and motels. Isabel wiped out much of the OBX, which was long overdue to happen. It will all be rebuilt though, I'm sure.

Virginia-West Virginia hiking spots
Just checking through some Virginia and West Virginia newspapers. There is a lot of flooding in the mountains of western Virginia and eastern West Virginia, particularly in the areas of Shenandoah National Park and the Lee Ranger District of the GW National Forest. Trees are down over a wide area, bridges are out, roads closed, etc.

I suspect the damage assessments are nowhere near complete. It does not sound like a good idea to travel there for the next couple of weeks.

Unless you want to help clean up? There will be a need for a lot of willing arms to bend down and move branches off the trails. We took out four trees with a hand saw in a three mile stretch of bike trail this afternoon, and countless smaller branches that didn't need a saw. If you can, plan to do a short walk where you help clear as you go. The assistance will be needed.

Wilmington, NC dodged the bullet. We got some light winds and the power went out for about 3 hours. A couple trees came down, some shingles were lost and the obligatory gas station overhang was damaged.

Of course, if you were watching our local idiot newscasters you would have thought Andrew had come ashore here.

ahhh, only 50 hours with no electricity. no damage to our house or any of our immediate neighbors, but there was plenty in this area. we got our power back last night. there are 21 trees of notable size down in my woods. all between 1 - 3 feet in diameter. i've had my chainsaw out helping the neighbor get his yard cleaned up. i'll sart on the trees in my woods today. our stoves and headlamps sure made things nice. we stashed plenty of drinking water before it all started so we didn't have any problems.

Thankfully, we are all fine. As Geo mentioned, we had a 75 foot oak tree fall which damaged the hoods of three cars, smashed my son’s 9 foot Sailfish sailboat, tore out a section of the fence and clipped the corner of the garage. Compared to our neighbors, our damage was minimal. Some homes were nearly completely destroyed by one or more fallen trees. My daughter wept as we drove through the neighborhood.

A crane company down the street is moving from home to home lifting massive oak trees out of homes. We just got back power yesterday. Schools are still closed.

We had one fatality in our neighborhood. He went outside during the worst part of the storm to look at a tree that was about to fall. The tree fell on him and killed him instantly.

Midlothian??? Hey Baume, are you that crazy backpacking nut who lives at the end of my street? We should pull together the Richmond TT chapter for a hike or drinks or something.

Yeah, first a hurricane, then a tornado. Enuf!!!!!!! I heard on the news that it touched down in Brandermill, which is what, 5 miles from us. Yikes. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

That was yesterday mapleleaf. Neither was near LyndyS (or me, thanks for asking). It did get pretty wild near us for a while - just when we'd put everything back out after Isabel.

An electrical wire was down on a school bus full of kids but they were rescued. Some property damage but no fatalities that I'm aware of.

They were just F1 tornadoes but we’re not used to these things likes folks in Kansas who get them every day.
