Landfall
"The eye of Hurricane Katrina makes landfall near the Miami-Dade-Broward county line, the National Hurricane Center says."

"The storm's winds at landfall were between 75 mph and 80 mph, with a 92-mph gust reported at Port Everglades, Mayfield told CNN. A Category 1 hurricane is capable of damaging mobile homes and downing tree branches. The storm is moving so slowly that forecasters said it could dump as much as 15 inches of rain."
In Melbourne I found it difficult to pedal my bicycle eastward, against the wind. We've received a few short showers and lots of cloud bands.

My brother lives in Pembroke Pines and I haven't heard from him yet. This isn't his first rodeo, so I am sure he was pretty squared away.

NPR reported 1,000,000 customers are without power.

Also said its supposed to make another FL landfall on the panhandle - possibly as a Cat 3 storm.

Hold on tight!

I think my parents friends who live in Pearl river, La., are coming for a visit today. Joe works at the Stennis Space center, usgs-hif department if you can call it that. It's going to take quite a bit of damage, I think. Be careful everyone.

Nope, they went west yesterday. They had to drag Joe's mother physically from her house to evacuate. Her words were "I survived Camille and I'll survive this!"

Be safe StoveStomper. You too, Steppenwolf, and Alabama folks -- Andrew was big on tornado spin-offs a long way from the eyewall -- don't get surprised.

End of Sahel drought may mean more U.S. hurricanes
DAKAR (Reuters) - Signs a three-decade long drought in Africa's arid Sahel belt may be ending could herald an increase in hurricanes battering the eastern seaboard of the United States, a leading climatologist in West Africa said.

snip

"Many of the hurricanes which reach Florida or the United States are formed here," said Amadou Gaye, head of Dakar University's Atmospheric Physics Laboratory.

"Squalls from the Sahel reach the African coast, where some of them become whirlwinds and perhaps 10 days later they become cyclones in the Atlantic," he told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.

The Sahel, a semi-desert zone which separates the Sahara from Africa's more tropical regions around the Equator, has been gripped by the worst drought in modern history since the 1970s.

But that appears to be changing. The heaviest rainfall in some thirty years in mainland Africa's most westerly country, Senegal, coincided with a record hurricane season this year -- including Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans.

"Since 2000, there has been an upward tendency in rainfall," Gaye said. "Statistically, when there is a very rainy year in the Sahel there are a lot of Atlantic hurricanes."

MIAMI (AFP) - Yet another tropical storm formed in the Atlantic, one month after the official end of the year's record-smashing hurricane season, forecasters said.

Tropical Storm Zeta developed in the eastern Atlantic, about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) south-southwest of the Azores, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center reported.

The extended hurricane season in the Atlantic has broken several records, with 27 tropical storms, 14 of which became hurricanes.
