“I heard from Creek Dancer in Richmond this morning. She and her kids got through the storm fine, although shaken by the power of it. A tree fell across three of their cars and her son's sailboat, but insurance will cover the damage. Trees are down all over her neighborhood, streets blocked, power out, but the main thing is that nobody got hurt.

She has her camping gear and plenty of food and water to weather this. We are still hoping to get together for either a fossil or camping trip next weekend, depending on cleanup and other factors.

The eye passed 35 miles to her west, which put her in the windiest part of the storm. It was down to Cat I by that time, and she commented that she does not want to see a Cat II.

She said it made her understand what mothers went through when Iraq was bombed - wondering where the safest part of the house was and what to do to protect her kids.

Here in Philly there is light wind damage - a few trees down, some localized power outages, and lots of small branches and leaves blown all over the place. There was some flooding out in Chester County to the west of Philly, otherwise the worst rain fell after 10 p.m. from a feeder band on the northeast side of the storm. The winds gusted to about 45-50, I would estimate. Trees and wires are down all around, but power outages seem pretty localized in my neck of the woods.

I hope we hear lots of stories about people being safe. Apparently loss of life was not too great from such a storm as Isabel was.”

“We got lucky here. Nothing to speak of but some rain and high winds. Storm took an inland course, it seems...”

“The course took it 35 miles west of Richmond to just north of Charlottesville where my friend Bluetick lives (I have not heard from him yet) to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia and on to 25 miles east of Pittsburgh.

It's now down to a tropical storm and weakening more as it moves north.”

Great, higher insurance rates for the rest of us. People should not be allowed to build new structures or rebuild their million dollar homes within 50 miles of the Atlantic. The rest of the country is tired of bailing out your sorry selfish asses.”

“Virtually nothing, few Branches down and the was a big tree down in a park on Penn. Talk about an over-reaction. The only real problem was cuased by them shutting Metro at 11am, that's what shut the city down. Few people at work had power outages, but stuff was back first thing this morning.”

But you are so intent on putting $hit on me that your reading skills left a lot to be desired. You would have flipped if somebody had failed to read a part of your posts. “And FYI, within 50 miles of the Atlantic includes the entire Eastern Seaboard, including a lot of major cities. But Richmond, if you had any sense at all, is 75-80 miles away from the ocean.

“My division is managing about 85 facilities in the area. Our call center is swamped this morning. Every provider in my system has been dispatched.

Our disaster recovery department is transferring all available crews to the area. It is a hectic morning.”

Ynami, there's an article on the Washington Post about the hurricane hype by the media. The networks, notably FAUX News are, are trotting out their reporters and fretting over the whole thing. The hurricane sounds serious, but it's apparently being hyped to the max.”

“Central Jersey got pretty high winds but pretty minor rain. Mostly just a lot of leaves scattered around and a few tree limbs. Some folks had large trees come down and a few areas are without power. Hope everyone south of us is OK.

I'm with mutt - we should really level all eastern cities and let the area return to nature.”

CreekDancer, I am sorry about the cars and boat. That is always a problem at my home, trying to figure where is the safest place to stash the cars. We were very lucky last night, but my neighbor had a large tree land on her house at 3 in the morning. My husband and I heard it and went outside to investigate. Scared the neighbor enough for her whole family to move to the basement for the rest of the night.”

“I was OK just north of Charlottesville - a lot of noise but no damage to anything of mine. Rivers are rather high and there are a fair number of trees down. I hope to get out to St. Mary's WA this weekend to see how bad it got whacked - this storm just might have brought down the rest of the gypsy moth killed oaks.

Couldn't sleep very well due to the noise - noticed a calm in the middle of the night and I guess it was the eye passing over but I am not real sure. One thing I am glad about is that it was fast moving - already cleared out this morning - I didlike those storms that hang around for 5 or 6 days dumping rain - give me one like this - fast moving.”

“HOI, you apparently live very near my friend Bluetick, who lives just off Rte 20. I lived in Madison County for a few years back in the late 70s, and then in Waynesboro for five more years. I wrote the stories about St. Mary's becoming a wilderness area when it happened. It's still among my favorite places. Ain't much that storm could do to St. Mary's that earlier storms haven't already done!”

“I’d be one of those out at the beach. Years back, when I lived down the shore, the fire dept. came through about 5 am and told everyone to evacuate from the approaching hurricane. Before we left, we stopped at the beach to check it out. Nature is truly awesome! We had to leave after a couple of minutes because we were getting sandblasted – it hurt!”

“Yeah, that sandblasting can make ya into a believer in a big hurry. Makes you understand why it does what it does to rock!”

“Lyra are you sure that tree didn't hit an electrical line and catch on fire before falling on your car, catching it on fire, and cause it to roll into a secluded field where the fire wouldn't burn your house up? After removing all your personal stuff. I've seen tree limbs do that before!

“Mutt does have somewhat of a point about Federal (not private) insurance programs which cover BEACH FRONT homes, often for big bucks. We are subsidizing some rich cat's vacation home/business property, and we (the little guy) has to buy beach tags to take our kids to frolic in the ocean.
