TT Trip for 2004
Because of the success of Sierrapalooza, discussion of another TT trip was strarted on that thread.
Discussion has progressed to the point that the TT trip for 2004 will be in the Wind River Mts. or the Tetons. Date have not been settled yet.

Shawn was kind enough to suggest some reading material:

References
"Book suggestions for the Winds are easy:

"Climbing and Hiking Wind River Mountains"--Joe Kelsy
This one has lots of climbing stuff mixed into it which is comfusing until you figure it out.

"Walking the Winds"--Rebecca Woods
Does not seem as complete but maybe it's just because I used Kelsey's book first.

Earth Walk Press Hiking Map and Guide, Northern (and Southern) Wind River Range

Both maps are essential.

"Wind River Trails" by Finis Mitchell
Mitchell opened the Winds up to recreation. Lived until not to long ago, and it something of the local legend. His book is pretty scant, he refers to a 2-3 day trips as a "walk."

Also, check out the Big Sandy Lodge website. I would do some checking prior to committing to stay there again. Seemed like they were not very "viable" when we were there last. Looked like some $$ problems, but that may have changed by now.

Pinedale Online is another website for local information.

This is starting to feel "real." I am certainly game for this, it is a trip of a (my) lifetime. I know of one hiking buddy here that talks pretty seriously of doing it, so I would be bring one or two, and can probably fit one or two in the Explorer at SLC. I'm thinking a minimum of a week in the backcountry. You can also fly into Rock Springs, WY, but its a commuter out of SLC or Denver. Haven't checked fares."

I won't be doing the Wonderland Trail. I thought about it once, all these ridges like spokes on a wheel, and you get to go up then down each one. And they're BIG!

I tried looking for the Joe Kelsey book on Lattaoutdoors. When I didn't find it, I called their phone number and left a message for Matt to check out the books suggested on this thread and post if he plans to stock them. Might as well keep the money in the family, so to speak, if it's possible.

Karen, I'd love to but it is way too early to ask the boss about another major trip away from home without the family. :(

Sure would be great to see you and everyone else again.

What would be the logistics of getting people from SLC to the trailhead? I guess we could try to get to the airport at about the same time then rent a van or something like that.

I really wanna do another long TT backpack!!! I will do all I can to come along on this one.

Hey, thanks, Matt. And on a Sunday, too.

Somehow, I got too many Northern Wind Range maps in my shopping cart and I can't remove them. I just want one Southern and one Northern. Can you talk sweetly to the computer program for me?

Navi, I'm with ya! This will probably be one of those trips of a lifetime. Will be nice to go on another trip with you. Hope to go on one with you before this one though.

Ok, I know that Shawn is not Rockman. Rockman's real name is Bill. What did Shawn change his name from?

I'm going to order a book and a topo of the areas too. This should be another great trip! Glad to see several of the sierrapaloozers are going on this trip!

Next step, go by CSAA and pick up a map of Wyoming and points in between here and there and continue to read trip reports about the area.

mapquest says it takes 15 hours to drive to Jackson Hole from Sacto. When you figure in the time driving to the airport and the 6 hour drive from SLC and the money you would save, carpooling sounds more doable.

Yea my DD's comming but I'll be the DD. Can't get that girl close to a Margarita watering hole without trouble Ha ha.
Shot...oh never mind Rockman beat me. I'm all for carpooling. Don't think I can do little planes(not crazy 'bout big ones either).
If there's snow I'll sneak out of camp early with "someones" hiking poles =8). Not that they did ladyhiker any good either though.

I took a look at the Wyoming map. It looks a lot more difficult to get to the Wind River Range than it does to get to the Tetons.
I reread the Tetons trips in Backpacker Mag. They sound pretty good. Plus, a few years back, I took a look across Jenny Lake into Cascade Canyon(?) and wanted to start walking right then.

Anyone else think the Tetons sound good?

tetons sound good - not too far of a drive from where i'll be in MT. of course, i don't know when exactly i'll be in MT so this may all be dreaming for me...
