Thanks for the route planning Bigpoppa - it's really nice of you to take on the job.

are you talking about "ability" compared to others or are you talking about a "disability" physically?

om--I am talking about a disability. Two years ago I developed a thing of misbehaving nerves in my side and feet. This can get really painful but I have drugs now that help. I also have some arthritis in one hip but ibuprofen usually takes care of that. Anyway, the days of 15 or 20 miles seem to have passed and i would say 8 is about the max I can do now--sigh.

The 5-7 miles sounds fine. I have 2 small radios we can use. I will look and see which brand i have. Waiting to get my new wood stove in the mail. Going to order some books. Any suggestions as to which books about Wind River are the best?

sounds great!
Bigpoppa! Thank you sooooo much for all your efforts. I'll show my appreciation on the trail. Maybe some homemade chocolate chip cookies or homemade toffee? Which do you prefer? None of those "fake" Oreos for sure! Phil?

Anyway 5-8 sounds good to me! No basecamp! I like going to a different place each day.

Om, it will be so nice to see you again! Navi and jvz, hope you two can make it!

Lightpacker, on page one of this thread is a list of books and maps with links to get them from Matt's bookstore. I think people are preferring the Kelsey one.

I'm looking forward to seeing the decided route. Good effort Poppa.

I think I've solved my scheduling problem as well. Although getting down there in time to hike Saturday might be a trick, if I want to drive.

Om, if you go in from Dickinson (east side), you won'y have to cross any logs.

And..I can tell you where some pretty cool campsites are at.

And...you won't hardly see anybody from that side.

I ordered the Joe kelsy book yesterday--found it used. Does it have good maps in it?

The pictures from last year's trip were awsome--need to see it for myself.

I am not much for a basecamp either--are we doing a loop or a shuttle?

Route looks fine to me. Of course i have never been to the winds so i will go with what others decide. Ordered books on the area today. Also got my new wood stove yesterday and am trying it out today in my backyard. Better to try it here than on a trip.

Route looks great! can anyone tell me where to find info on the unmaintained trail from peak lake to Titcomb basin. It's shown in the Kelsey book but the only info is a short description of knapsack col.

Bison...
this from Finis Mitchell's book in the square top mountain route description..last paragraph:
"Titcomb canyon can also be reached from Peak Lake, from where you can go on up to Gannet Peak. Going east up the creek entering Peak lake, you pass a series of long slender lakes and continue right on up the stream staying on its left side all the way (no trail). In the upper end of the canyon you climb almost straight east, aiming for the pass between Twin Peaks and Winifred Peak. You pass through onto Knapsack Col on the upper end of Twins Glacier, Stay high (heh) as you can as you continue due east where in about a mile and a half you'll join the Titcomb Canyon trail going up to dinwoody Pass. This is one of the two main trails to Gannett Peak."

i like this lightweight little book...maybe Matt has it for sale, check it out.

The Climbing and Hiking book mentioned earlier has info on the unofficial routes. Finis Mitchel's book is great, nothing superflous in it tho, just the basics. A "walk" may be three hours or three days.

and WHAM!! Everyone forgets you!! Hey Big Poppa, my email is lapb24@yahoo and I need to see the trip route. I still have this trip on my radar for the "Big Trip of 2004".

I've just read the last several threads and like the information on the book that Om provided...now I can do some arm chair quarterbacking I guess!!

Om, any chance you can blow thru Texas and pick me up?? ;-)

Jerber, you crusty critter, how the hell are you??

Ocala 3 is just round the bend, co I'll see some of Y'all there!!
