“The Winds would be way less polpulated than the Tetons, IMHO.

Pepper, you need to add another 3 hours to get to the Dickinson Park TH, at least. Other places you can fly into would be Cody, Rock Springs, and Riverton (closest).

I recommend Dickinson Park TH on the east side of the Winds because it is also less crowded that the west side, i.e. Big Sandy.

It is relatively easy to get into the Indian Reservation from there too. Just turn to the right when on top of Bears' Ears Pass (11,800').

And, don't forget to spend a night in Lander at the end of the trip so you can drive over to Hudson for the BEST steaks in Wyoming!!!!”

“I was in the Winds Aug-14 thru the 17 this year. We had several late afternoon rainshowers. Nothing to make it soggy though.”

“I assumed we would be using the east side of the Winds. And Chief says so too. :-)
I'm in So. Cal. so for me to get there I'd have to drive through the Tetons or go way east and hook back northwest. Likewise for anyone else driving through or flying into Salt Lake City.
Also to quote Backpacker Magazine, re. the Tetons: "SEASON - After Labor Day is prime time, with drier weather, no thunderstorms, and virtually no one in the backcountry."”

“Navi, did you look at following 80 out of SLC to 191 north (Rock Springs), then northeast on 28 to 287 to Lander? I think the Dickinson TH is west of Lander.

CSAA driving time from SLC to Rock Springs is 3 hours, then there's another almost 120 miles to go -- figure 5 hours total. CSAA driving time from SLC to Jackson is 6 hours.”

It used to be that as long as you weren't in a municipality (City, Town, etc) and were on the highway, EVERYONE could be drinking, as long as the driver was under the legal limit (0.10). Now, only the passengers can be drinking. At least that's how I think it is now? Legal limit today, 0.08.

You might want to consider flying into somewhere other than Cody, unless you're coming to see me. It's a good 5 or 6 hours to Dickinson from my house. Rock Springs or Riverton are way closer, especially if you are planning on having someone pick you up for a shuttle.

I'd love to go and play tour guide, but only if I can get two more weeks vacation. Right now 1 week to go to in-laws 50th wedding anniversary in Colorado Springs, and if I don't get back to MN to see my folks, they'll probably disown me!!”

“Rockman - yeah, had a great hike. I went with my friends Olive Oyl (she's been on one TT trip) and hear boyfriend, tripod guy. I had planned to get an early start but since I wasn't meeting anyone and had been to a party the night before we didn't make it out of Sacramento until 9:30 ish.

It was a perfect day for a perfect hike, enough climbing to make you feel like you were working but not enough to hurt. I had all 3 dogs along and they had a blast, although there was less water along the trail than I expected so I had to give them one of my bottles of water. We hung out at Twin Lakes for a while then pushed on to Island Lake. We found 3 tents which I think were probably wannabp and co's so I left them a note, we had a late lunch and headed back down the hill.

I really understand why they call it Desolation - pretty darn stark. If it had been just a little hotter it would have been uncomfortable but there was a nice breeze and I actually got chilly sitting in the shade.

The dogs are still crashed out, I guess they don't need their walkie this morning. I suppose I will be seeing you in a few hours. I know I earned a margarita!”
