It can't be any harder to drive to than Mineral King.” 1:12:05 AM 9/24/03 “LMFAO! i think snow nymph spilled a nalgene bottle on her keyboard! i'll try my best to make this trip. it would be a great excuse for me to see my bestest friend, garfum the grizzly bear hater. seriously garfy, keep me posted on this one. oh...... and it's your turn to call me!” 1:22:09 AM 9/24/03 “The Winds would be way less polpulated than the Tetons, IMHO. Pepper, you need to add another 3 hours to get to the Dickinson Park TH, at least. Other places you can fly into would be Cody, Rock Springs, and Riverton (closest). I recommend Dickinson Park TH on the east side of the Winds because it is also less crowded that the west side, i.e. Big Sandy. It is relatively easy to get into the Indian Reservation from there too. Just turn to the right when on top of Bears' Ears Pass (11,800'). And, don't forget to spend a night in Lander at the end of the trip so you can drive over to Hudson for the BEST steaks in Wyoming!!!!” 10:32:51 AM 9/24/03 “To legally hike in the Wind River Indian Reservation, you need a fishing permit and a recreation stamp from the Tribal Fish and Game Office in Fort Washakie. Varying according to age, duration and residency, permits prices range from as little as $10 for an annual resident youth pass to a high of $85 for a non-resident annual permit with a recreation stamp. Children 14 and under are free. Call the Tribal Fish and Game Office at 307-332-7207 for details.” 11:26:43 AM 9/24/03 I'm in! “I need a reason to force myself back into the gym.” 12:32:57 PM 9/24/03 “Wow! More tt'rs to meet! LOL at Snownymph's keyboard. I shouldn't even talk. I had the worst keyboard ever! Almost all the letters had worn off. Hodge can attest to that. I'm sure it drove him nuts. You'll be glad to know that I have a new one. :) I attached a recent trip report with pics from another site I'm on. According to this guy, he got several days of rain in Aug. So, it might be a little soggy for us! Oh well! We'll be singing in the rain...la la la . http://home.apu.edu/~elulofs/bp/Wind.html” 4:28:43 PM 9/24/03 I forgot... “Did pepper mention carpooling? I'm in for that. I think it'd be much less of a hassle than flying. I'll drive to Sac and meet up with the rest if that will be the meeting and starting point. We'll first have to see where everyone is coming from I guess. I'm in Stockton and you are......” 4:32:53 PM 9/24/03 “I was in the Winds Aug-14 thru the 17 this year. We had several late afternoon rainshowers. Nothing to make it soggy though.” 4:34:37 PM 9/24/03 Hey that's Ed's page “Hikerchic...do you know Ed?” 4:40:20 PM 9/24/03 “hi windwalker! No, I don't know Ed. On the yosemitehikes website he mentioned that he just got back from there so I asked him if he had some pics. He posted his website because another guy wanted to see them as well. Are you going on this trip?” 5:03:55 PM 9/24/03 “I know Ed - he was one of the first people I hiked with when I started a little over 3-years ago.” 5:23:37 PM 9/24/03 “Ooops, another place to fly into would be garfums's town of Casper. Probably the cheapest to get to and not too far from the Winds.” 5:35:26 PM 9/24/03 “If I can arrange it! I've been on a couple of trips with Ed. I didn't know he went to the Winds though.” 5:42:28 PM 9/24/03 “Wingding, you've only been backpacking 3 years?????!!!!! I would have guessed 3 decades.” 7:49:22 PM 9/24/03 Getting there “I got the Wyoming state map today. I can't see any particular difficulty getting to Pinedale. Navi, is the problem getting to the trailhead? Landscaper and I can join the list of drivers.” 7:52:30 PM 9/24/03 “I assumed we would be using the east side of the Winds. And Chief says so too. :-) I'm in So. Cal. so for me to get there I'd have to drive through the Tetons or go way east and hook back northwest. Likewise for anyone else driving through or flying into Salt Lake City. Also to quote Backpacker Magazine, re. the Tetons: "SEASON - After Labor Day is prime time, with drier weather, no thunderstorms, and virtually no one in the backcountry."” 8:14:44 PM 9/24/03 “I ordered the Winds maps, not the Tetons maps.” 10:32:13 PM 9/24/03 “Yes, just 3-years. It's all new to me.” 10:35:14 PM 9/24/03 “Rockman & JVZ.. If Bigpoppa carpools with you, you lose the shotgun position... It could even be dangerous to have him in the back... And JVZ - You thought I was slipping on that snowfield? I was actually honing my avalanche skills.. yeah.. that's it.. avalanche... yeah...That's it.... Trekkngirl - glad you have the right state! I'll look forward to hiking with you again... Are you coming out for Winterfest 2004? Navi - Wonderland Trail.. You can do it.. I did it.. Bring Tommy & Phil, we'll carpool.. Pepper - We can share tent, stove, stuff, etc.. Lighten your load.. (Not to mention mine!) You deserve this trip after having to pass on Sierrapalooza! (Can I still come back and trash the kitchen?)” 10:49:45 PM 9/24/03 California, Wyoming,Where ever..LOL “Geeze,Gosh Ladyhiker..Just point me in the right direction and I'll be there..” 11:02:19 PM 9/24/03 ladyhiker “I e-mailed you(crying..lol..)about how cold if it would be at Winterfest.Did you get it?” 11:07:12 PM 9/24/03 “Nope, not the Wonderland Trail. Not going to do it, no way.” 12:27:44 AM 9/25/03 “Navi, did you look at following 80 out of SLC to 191 north (Rock Springs), then northeast on 28 to 287 to Lander? I think the Dickinson TH is west of Lander. CSAA driving time from SLC to Rock Springs is 3 hours, then there's another almost 120 miles to go -- figure 5 hours total. CSAA driving time from SLC to Jackson is 6 hours.” 1:19:56 AM 9/25/03 “It looks like there are flights into Cody from Ontarion, CA if I change planes in Salt Lake City.” 1:57:51 AM 9/25/03 “If I am still in Sac then I would like to participate in teh car-pooling. :) Hey, what are the open container laws in wyoming?” 11:07:05 AM 9/25/03 “Open container Law: It used to be that as long as you weren't in a municipality (City, Town, etc) and were on the highway, EVERYONE could be drinking, as long as the driver was under the legal limit (0.10). Now, only the passengers can be drinking. At least that's how I think it is now? Legal limit today, 0.08. You might want to consider flying into somewhere other than Cody, unless you're coming to see me. It's a good 5 or 6 hours to Dickinson from my house. Rock Springs or Riverton are way closer, especially if you are planning on having someone pick you up for a shuttle. I'd love to go and play tour guide, but only if I can get two more weeks vacation. Right now 1 week to go to in-laws 50th wedding anniversary in Colorado Springs, and if I don't get back to MN to see my folks, they'll probably disown me!!” 11:17:29 AM 9/25/03 “Chief, this trip sounds like it could be the answer to your problems. Backpacking is better than relatives. Wannabp, the 1st map (no detail) I looked at took me all the way to Rawlings then back. The cut off at Rock Springs makes it look better if we are going into the southern Winds. Has that been decided already?” 7:44:00 PM 9/25/03 “Got my maps! Chief suggested the Dickinson TH, which appears to be out of Lander. Wing, wouldn't it be cheaper to fly to SLC and car pool or rent a car from there? We could all lodge in Lander (yes, a decidedly nice ring) the night before.” 9:56:18 PM 9/25/03 “Maybe it would be wannabp - we'll have to figure it out if this trip gets off the ground. My maps came today, so I know what I'll be looknig at for a while.” 10:59:17 PM 9/25/03 Sacramento area carpool “I'm in for carpooling too so as the time and route become clear we can go from there. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a '65 VW bus so we can all go. Hey wannabp I'll bet your area has a bunch of em. Not for sale though I'm sure. Pepperdog: there should be enough stuff out there to double you up just fine. Talk Obi into comming and we know he already owes you a tent(and leggings but we don't want to say that or people will think we Californians are weird). So we're all driving to Cheifs relatives party first. Whats our total mileage lookin to be? These trips start out so difficult!” 4:40:44 PM 9/26/03 “A VW Bus!? Far out! Can I hitch with you? It'll be a groovy time! Maybe we should paint it first, you know like with flowers and pychodelic colors and rainbows and peace signs and you know kinda like Wow we could do this giant reefer and just and go wow this would we so coool that like we could .... wow what were we talking about?” 5:25:58 PM 9/26/03 “I'm all for that!!!!!!” 8:52:10 PM 9/26/03 “I don't think a VW will be big enough - we will need the old converted school bus thing, ya know, like the Merry Pranksters had (didn't that bus have a name?).” 10:40:00 AM 9/27/03 “I'll start growing a pony tail.” 10:42:41 AM 9/27/03 “i'll need some armpit hair...” 10:45:15 AM 9/27/03 “Like, no, it was just, like, you know, "THE BUS". The bus on the Further Trip. Oh my Gawd, I feel so old.... yet so young.” 3:21:08 PM 9/27/03 “Phil,,,in Alabama we call that a mullet.” 3:23:48 PM 9/27/03 “LOL Chili.... Oh yea definately have to paint the bus. I'll swear on my random drug test I got a contact high. Can we say Tetons on trail talk? Anybody seen the Turtle Bus around lately?http://www.greentortoise.com/” 7:35:00 PM 9/27/03 Phil “You'll look real cute with a ponytail.. Navi you are young!” 10:40:51 PM 9/27/03 “jvz - I actually had the thought of chartering the green tortoise for this trip! Great minds think alike (or minds from a similar generation).” 11:11:16 PM 9/27/03 “I'm old. But I refuse to grow up!” 11:13:44 PM 9/27/03 “Hi navi - how are you doing, old guy. Actually you aren't that much older than I am - your constant harping on how old you are makes me think I should start thinking of myself as old!” 11:19:59 PM 9/27/03 “hey granny, did you go up to Desolation today? :)” 11:59:33 PM 9/27/03 “I thought a mullet was a fish.” 8:49:28 AM 9/28/03 “Rockman - yeah, had a great hike. I went with my friends Olive Oyl (she's been on one TT trip) and hear boyfriend, tripod guy. I had planned to get an early start but since I wasn't meeting anyone and had been to a party the night before we didn't make it out of Sacramento until 9:30 ish. It was a perfect day for a perfect hike, enough climbing to make you feel like you were working but not enough to hurt. I had all 3 dogs along and they had a blast, although there was less water along the trail than I expected so I had to give them one of my bottles of water. We hung out at Twin Lakes for a while then pushed on to Island Lake. We found 3 tents which I think were probably wannabp and co's so I left them a note, we had a late lunch and headed back down the hill. I really understand why they call it Desolation - pretty darn stark. If it had been just a little hotter it would have been uncomfortable but there was a nice breeze and I actually got chilly sitting in the shade. The dogs are still crashed out, I guess they don't need their walkie this morning. I suppose I will be seeing you in a few hours. I know I earned a margarita!” 9:49:44 AM 9/28/03 “Silly me - I thought this was the "Sacramento - time for a drink" thread. I guess I will copy and paste it onto there.” 9:52:08 AM 9/28/03 “Pepper, the point, and I think you get it, is attitude!” 4:16:55 PM 9/28/03 I might be able to make if I can ride. . . “on 'The Short Yellow Bus!'” 4:24:23 PM 9/28/03 “ha ha ha! Yeah we need a short yellow school bus...I think we can fit kegs in there :)” 8:13:28 PM 9/28/03 Jump to Page << prev
