He's the only one who volunteered kinda anyway. Show of hands for wanderer? I'll help paint the bus too. I'm from the 70's era!” 3:18:43 PM 10/07/03 “I forgot to add--farout and groovy man!” 3:19:10 PM 10/07/03 “So is this trip going to end up being "California invades Wyoming" or is anyone from any other state thinking of showing up? Really, we won't make too many Arnold jokes or make you hike in Birkinstocks.” 3:53:22 PM 10/07/03 “But you have to put wire around your cars at trailhead or tarp them to keep the invaders from painting flowers on them.8)” 4:05:58 PM 10/07/03 “I plan on joining this one - but I'm in Wyoming - so it's still an invasion.” 4:08:38 PM 10/07/03 “Reading my CSAA Tour book tonight..... The area north of Rock Springs is a desert, second only to the Sahara Desert. I want to spend a month in Wyoming looking at everything.” 10:51:25 PM 10/07/03 “I'm from the seventys too:) 1979!!! I will go, someone has to keep all you old scoundrals alive and in trouble :)” 12:01:37 AM 10/08/03 “Hey Paloozers !! I'm watchin' this one for sure. Can we do this for mid-July like the Beartooths? I'll be setting up next year's vacation schedule before long” 12:04:46 AM 10/08/03 “Any of the summer months is good for me. If Hodgeman wants July, I am all for it, we need his level head and maturity on this trip. Plus he was always good for carrying extra snacks.” 8:53:06 AM 10/08/03 “Mid-July would work for me.” 9:41:24 AM 10/08/03 “You're better off in late July, or early August. We went in mid July our 2nd time and encountered some snow in the trail still, and the bugs were as bad as I've ever seen them. We did have head nets though. July 24 to August 1 would be about perfect. Or the week before.” 9:56:23 AM 10/08/03 “Hey Big Poppa - You must be thinkin' of some other Hodgeman .... He He He I like July 18 - 24 okay” 10:13:24 AM 10/08/03 “Actually, come to think of it 11-17 would be perfect at this end, or is that too early” 10:15:51 AM 10/08/03 “When does this go on the trips page? I'll start doing the research now and the area was on my "to hike" list so I'm a maybe.” 11:41:30 AM 10/08/03 “Hodgman, I sure I have the right Hodgeman. The guy who needs two bear canister for all his food. As I remember it was all good eats from your store.” 12:49:14 PM 10/08/03 “Oh ya !!... Let's go somewhere I can just hang my food as usual ;-)” 2:51:07 PM 10/08/03 “I did a search for Washakie and Hailey passes and read a couple trip reports. Mosquitoes were a dominant theme for the early July trip -- and the people had to glissade down from Washakie Pass. Are we looking at a 7-day trip? Can we have a show of hands for dates so we can move it to the trips page?” 9:53:02 AM 10/09/03 “I would prefer the first or second week of August. I was up there the second week of August this year and there was hardly any bugs.” 10:13:06 AM 10/09/03 “We were there in July and the first 1/2 of the trip we had bugs. Then they disappeared. Aug would probably be better if you want bug free.” 10:21:14 AM 10/09/03 “Any possibility of the Snows coming? You guys set a fantastic pace. I feel 20 years younger just remembering the Sierrapalooza.” 10:33:42 AM 10/09/03 “I vote for 5 -7 days and early August.” 10:55:09 AM 10/09/03 “Late July early August” 1:31:57 PM 10/09/03 “I can do 2nd week of August, but I've got trips to put together for my beloved Cdn Rockies as well” 4:08:52 PM 10/09/03 “I'm told late August/early Sept when the bugs and kids are gone is best. I know that conflicts with school and other things though.” 4:53:21 PM 10/09/03 “Shawn, could you live with early August?” 8:36:40 PM 10/09/03 “Early August would be great. Free of bugs and less people sounds great to me! Hi ya hodge! :)Haven't seen you post lately. bigpoppa, hodge did have a lot food didn't he? wannabp, you go girl on reading those maps and books! Do we need to carry canisters for this trip? pepper, glad to see that you'll be making this trip!” 9:50:36 PM 10/09/03 “Canisters are not required in that area. Regular bear bag hanging is still effective.” 10:08:52 PM 10/09/03 “If we do early August, maybe Wind Walker and kids and Fritz and kid could come. Landscaper and I might even talk our kid into coming -- at least as far as the Cirque of Towers. I'm assuming "....when the bugs and kids are gone is best...." means less crowded and not kid aversion.” 10:19:09 PM 10/09/03 “I think you need to figure out how much distance people want to cover and then split into two groups or find a trip that allows for side trips for those who want to cover a bit more distance.” 6:36:49 AM 10/10/03 “I know this doesn't help but you schedule it, I'll be there. Ordered books and maps from Latta outdoors to study. 6-10 miles per day sounds good. With a big group there may be varying paces but it'd be nice to have plenty of time to socialize around the cook-stoves.” 12:09:23 PM 10/10/03 “I promise to buy poles but still lets try to avoid the snow(white stuff not "the snows"). And bugs.Any August sounds good. Thank you researchers!” 12:39:29 PM 10/10/03 “I also like the two-group plan. I like to hike long days.” 12:19:32 AM 10/13/03 “6 miles is a little short for me unless it is up hill. I would like to push for a little more. I like to get out camp around 8 or 9 and get to camp around 4 or 5 with a few breaks in the middle. That does not have to be every day, but more majority then not. I am flexable and will go with the group, but if you are asking...” 8:37:11 AM 10/13/03 “I Agree! If'n imgonna go all that way I wanna hike. 6 miles seems a little short. -Free24-” 9:25:58 AM 10/13/03 “It sounds short to me for MI also but last year at Teton National Park, the group I was with did 6 miles a day due to terrain. I like a full day of hiking too, but guess that a better understanding of the route would help determine the mileage. CMB - why is your signature line Free24???” 9:47:52 AM 10/13/03 “I am Free24 at CMB's pad :)” 9:51:13 AM 10/13/03 “Aaaaaah!” 9:52:19 AM 10/13/03 “6 miles sounds great to me.” 11:31:26 AM 10/13/03 “I'm also interested in this trip and would prefer longer rather than shorter mileage. Since its going to take some effort to get to the area I'd like to see as much as possible.” 11:31:50 AM 10/13/03 “Sign me back up, but for the longer mileage version of the trip.” 12:17:25 PM 10/13/03 Hours on the trail “Whenever I'm planning a trip I usually like to calculate hours on the trail vs. number of miles. 10 or 12 miles on flat terrain & on a good trail isn't bad, but 10 or 12 miles with 4,000 ft. elevation change is a whole different thing! Maybe we should ask how many hours / day everyone likes to hike, like dhutch mentioned. Just a thought...” 12:39:02 PM 10/13/03 “Alternative North A 7 day, 70+/- mile loop out of New Forks Lake (NFL) Campground featuring Titcomb Basin, Peak Lake, Square Top Mountain, Green River Lakes, Porcupine Pass. I'm not trying to throw a wrencdh into any plans already in the works, but several people have expressed a desire for a more challenging trip, I offer this as an option to see if there is interest. September 6 is Labor Day, so if we can work that into the trip it saves a day of vacation time for many of us. Exact dates are not critical yet, but perhaps plan it so we are driving home on the day after? Open here to whatever, and including Labor Day is not critical. Day 0 Arrive in Pinedale, final provisions, camp at NFL Campground Day 1 New Forks Trail, Lowline Trail, Doubletop Trail, to Palmer Lake 9 miles Day 2 Doubletop Trail past No-name lakes, Summit Lake, Gunsight Pass to just below (s) of Brimstone Mtn 9.5 Day 3 Highline Tr. South to Fremont Crossing, detour Big Water Slide, Traverse Titcomb Basin, camp at upper Titcomb lake 10+ Day 4 Over Knapsack Col, head of Green River, CO River system, camp @ Peak Lake or Dale Lake (possibly push farther and camp streamside) 7 +/- Day 5 Descend Highline Trail to below Square Top Mtn. Decide whether to go up STM (5+/- miles RT, 3K) today or in the morning. 7 (or 12) Day 6 Sq Top is 23 miles from the car, 2 days if we went up the mtn on day 5, 2.5 if we go up Sq. Top today. Continue North on the Highline trail to the cross over between the GRL, head south on Porcupine Trail. Camp stream side 10-12 Day 7 Out via New Fork Trail, beat feet to Pinedale for prime rib at the Stockman’s bar and restaurant. 11-13* mostly downhill, if you’ve made it this far, piece ‘o cake $.02” 7:42:16 PM 10/13/03 Just some ramblings “BigPoppa and aussie are really buff hikers (as are many others). 10 miles for them is no big deal and I don't blame them for wanting that. How about a compromise. 7-8 miles per day with lots of side trip options for those that can handle it? Having two separate groups is OK, but I like to spend time with people in camp. Just my $.02. If it is in September I probably couldn't make it anyway. Still sizing up options and what I can get away with. Did we say late July is out of the picture?” 8:47:43 PM 10/13/03 “Our trip report from last year is on the webpage, and includes the elevation (start, high, low, end) for each day, including the miles we did. I think the southern section of the trip we did was more like what Wingding likes. The north part was all in trees and flat. The Green River was pretty, but after leaving Cube Pass and walking through trees for hours, I wanted to get higher and hike around alpine lakes and passes. But that's just me.” 10:02:01 PM 10/13/03 “Thanks for the input Snow Nymph - I really don't want to be stuck in the trees for any length.” 11:50:54 PM 10/13/03 “Shawn: I'll check out that route.” 12:21:27 AM 10/14/03 “My preference is longer days, high mountain passes, alpine lakes, and sweeping vistas. The southern part of the Snow's trip looks good to me and could be adapted to go from Dickinson TH.” 12:47:48 AM 10/14/03 “I'm only opposed to a Labor Day time frame if it excludes any of those originally planning to attend. We had been working with Late July or August. I can attend any time as long as we decide before next June. I'm for the mountain passes, sweeping vistas and alpine lakes also.” 9:03:11 AM 10/14/03 “Labour Day's no good for me, but the following week (12-18) is okay” 9:26:11 AM 10/14/03 “I am for the mountains. I get enough trees here on the east coast.” 11:51:33 AM 10/14/03 Jump to Page << prev
