“Tryng to figure out the number 2 trip option. On my maps and the WY topo software, there's no trail from Indian Pass to Alpine Lakes Pass. Is it my eyes, my map, or my lack of imagination?”

“When I mapped it, there was a trail. I will print out exactly the trails for that. Give me a day.”

“No hurry. I'm off to Phoenix for a conference for a week.”

“We all have our own pace and reasons for being out there. I like to crunch miles and view it while I am walking. While I do appreciate the idea of stopping and "smelling the roses", I can not stop for too long a time or I get bored.

We will have to find a happy meduim. I will look into the idea of mapping out a 6 - 8 mile a day trip and then having an alternative route for mile crunchers like myself. Let me look at the map again.”

I am very iffy on the maybe list, but prefer the 6-8 mile life. Maybe with my new boots, lighter pack, and better conditioning I will be able to hike faster.”

“I'd rather do 6-8 miles and enjoy myself as I go along. 10 miles or more would leave me too exhausted at the end of the day to do anything but crash and burn.”

Bigpoppa - what is the general elevation out there anyway?”

“you go in at aprox 8-9k then up to 11-12. i am now an iffy. we at least need to stay somewhat together. weak link. many side hikes once you get into camp!”

“I checked my maps last night an the Route is all on trail. You're right on Bigpoppa.

I'm a mile cruncher too but I'll go along with whatever the group decides.”

“We start out at 9500 and then stay at about 11,000.

This group seems to large enough that if we do split up during the day and meet up at campsite, it won't make a difference.

I figure that we invest in two way radios. Maybe we have about four of the same kind and then we have one diffent route that we all agree on.

When I went to Serria last year, one of more interesting parts for me was when Aussi and I went off trail. That was the first time that I went off trail in a park I have never been in before. I navigated it pretty darn good. Kept my fence posts in site and came out right where I thought we would. I have read that the Winds is a great place to go off trail. There are plenty of fence posts to keep you on track.

(Change of subject)I will be goning over all the threads one more time. If I don't see a trend that the date is a bad date, then I am going to confirm by next week that the date is the 7 - 14 of August.”

“I'm assuming fencepost is Ohio slang for easily identifiable terrain. ie, the topo corresponds to the present geography.”

“Rockman...I agree, that's what the handrail means in orienteering speak. Something like a ridge, lake, creek that you can use to keep pointed in the right direction. Come on Poppa are we right? Are we right?”

“One of my favorite phrases "there is never a good fence post when you need one". I learned from my cows that a fence post is good for scratching. Another favorite phrase is "dumber than a fence post", usually saved for drivers or airheads,,,,,occasionaly for myself but not to often.”

Anyway - the week of the 7 - 14th looks fine to me. I gotta get a copy of one of the trail books and start getting a feel for this trip.

As for Bear's remarks. We used radio's in the Seirras with some limited success. I just assumed we would have the same limited success with some of those newer two-way radios.

Can someone post the names of the quads that are most appropriate? or some other map name from Earthwalk or something like that. Maybe the name of a good trail book as well.

I'm down in South Carolina and know nothing about this area, but I'm really really hoping to pull off this trip.

“Earthlink press go to Latta Outdoors. There's some discussion at the beginning of this thread. For the route being discussed you only need the Wind River South. (some one confirm, that's from memory)”

“The 6-8 mi a day sounds okay to me. I could go with the flow on that one, but I have no objection to keeping the daily milage down a bit, at those elevations.

The side trip and off-trail sounds good for those into the bonus miles.

I'm booking the Aug 8-14 week for vacation. If that changes I guess I'll have to try and make an adjustment later.”

“Is August 8-14 firm? I thought that was stil "tentative"!?”

“I agree, I can't commit until the exact dates are known. I have the vacation time but it may interfere with other plans. I won't have to know for sure for another month or so but the quicker the faster or the better.”

“I confirmed the date for August 7 - 14. I hope for the two or three people that this date is difficult for, that you can rearrange your schedule.

I will be looking a route this week when I get my new map. I had a lot of discrepencies in the two trail books I was using. I have a new map on order and it should be here this week.

I will try and let everyone know what the game plan is next week or the first week of Jan.”

“I may not make it until late on the 7th. I will have to fly in from the west coast unless I can change some things. Would I be able to catch up it I started out early on the 8th?”

“Yeah just saddle up one o them hamsters.”

“I think so. The first and second day are heading northeast. You could hook up with the group I think easily on that Sunday if you got an early start. It would be some power hiking, but doable.

You could also not push yourself and just start out that Monday with the 5 day group.”

“You do NOT need permits for the Winds, however, your group may be over the limit in size, yo better check in to it.

At least we didn't when we went in 1999, from Dickinson Park Trailhead.”
