Strangest person you met while hiking?
Who were the strangest people you didn't expect to find on a trail?

I'm going to be doing some solo hiking this fall in the Smokies. I'd have to say I would be a little on the paranoid side about running in to some freak in the woods with an ax. Lol

Is that foolish thinking or is it somewhat common for strange people to be wondering the trails?

Most of the people that I've met in the deep woods, I've liked. Some of the ones in the parks & campgrounds, I wouldn't mind avoiding.

If you’re going to run into a weirdo it’s probably going to be near a trailhead or somewhere near a road. As catshiker said the deeper into the woods you go the less likely you are to run into them, but do remember the most dangerous creature in the forest walks on two legs.

from the "best psycho" thread
This ain't backpacking but what the hey.

I once finished a 70 mile canoe trek on the St. Mary's river with my Scouts. (Georgia/Florida border if y'all are wondering)

Well, we have our gear piled up and are waiting for our pickup ride. This dude pulls up in a shiny new S10 pickup that has been completely ghettoed out. As I descibe this just keep in mind that the body and interior of this truck look like it left the dealer lot that morning. Still had all the plastic covering the interior even. The nice stock wheels were replaced with rusty old steel wheels wrapped in luggy tires that look like they came off a tractor in the back and pizza cutter tires up front on banged up centerline knock-offs. The rear bumper was replaced with a home welded rigup that looks like it was supposed to fit a full size truck. The bed was covered with a busted up looking fiberglass topper for a full size truck made to fit with a hammered together conglomeration of cast off lumber. Some pieces weren't even cut, just broken to fit....kinda.

Dude hops out and is only wearing a pair cut-offs made from a pair of yellow and green check sans-a-belt slacks but the sans-a-belt part was busted so he held them up a piece of frayed rope. Looks like he last shaved 20 years ago and hadn't bathed in longer. To top it off he's eating a gallon of ice cream with an old 8 inch lock blade buck knife.

I made the mistake of saying "Hi." and he launched into a friendly recital of his manifesto that the Jews were solely responsable for the defeat of the Confederacy and the rise of the Yankee controlled paper industry in the South and THAT was why the river level was so low.

45 minutes later our ride arrived and I was able to break free.

Pucker up!!!
CMB, while he might have played with blackened forks and toasted sockets in his youth, he really isn't not that crazy or cracked up like others wouldn't like you not to believe.

Its a good thing there aren't any corners in the woods and he hikes fast.

I honestly look forward to hiking w/CMB again. He is kewl dude..

on my first hike with the arkansas TT'ers...
we ran across bacpac...he was mighty strange as he just stood, back to us and stared straight into the woods...weird man.

and to argue against mike...take a 6 hour car ride with him...then you'll have SOMETHING to talk about...until then, you all have NO IDEA what your talking about...LOL
