What do you think?
Ok I really want a 0* bag but I can't do it this month and I have a trip to Maine in October.
My question is this do you all think it will work to put my 30* Mountainsmith Wisp with a 60" girth inside my 30* Marmot Never Winter with a 62" girth?

I am going to try this tonight and see if I can fit it all together. Both bags will combined will still be lighter than a cheap 0* bag. I just wonder if the down will compress too much?

Sounds like a good fit to me.

How cold it will go is simple, just add the temps of the two bags together, 30 + 30 = 60. You should be good down to 60 degrees.

I sandwiched a 20* slumberjack polarguard and a 20* campmor down together at TC2 and was very comfy in a tarp down to about 12*. I was sleeping on a cheap foam mat and a thermarest 3/4 guidelight.

Cool I am just nervous that it is going to get really cold the first weekend in October. The average low for the area is high 30's, with my luck it will go down in the negative numbers.

It sounds like you'll be fine. Though the bags I used were rated lower than yours, your bags are higher quality and will probably have similar results.

I had the Marmot bag down to 19* but i was wearing a down vest, fleece jacket and fleece pants. I can't say I was comfortable, but I stayed warm enough.

How long will the bag(s) be in use in Maine?

Is your worst case scenario one long cold miserable night, or a ruined 5 day trip?

Can you watch the weather for an expected low temp night and test in the Catskills, or somewhere close to home?

It is a 4 day trip, even a record low would only be in the 20's according to weather.com. We are going to be north of there in Baxter. I think I will be fine. I could always boils some water for a hot water bottle. Or just wear everything in my pack.

The bags seem to be lofting just fine, and I still have plenty of wiggle room.

We are staying in shelters so I do not have to worry about carrying a tent, although I am still going to bring my 8x10 silnylon tarp just in case. Two sleeping bags will not be a big deal.

Shelters ? as in lean-to's, this is at least 10*F colder than a tent.

Probably want to rig the tarp inside the shelter.

hmmm, ok, what about if I add a -12 celcius bag and a 38 degree bag?

12*C is about a +10*F.

a 38*F is really a minimalist bag for summer use, but the 2 together should be at least as warm as the 2 30*F bags mated.

:o) - yeah, I would have thought that the 38* bag would prolly add at least 10 degrees F to the rating of the other bag. Putting me down near zero in an emergency.

Yeah I need to make one for my bag- its down 15 degrees but I still freeze even on summer nights cause I sleep cold...brrrrrr.

Free if you are freezing in a 15* bag in the summer time in California I think you need something more than a liner.
