Mammoth Cave-Green River Float
It was a beautiful weekend for my last overnight before the baby.

The 8 of us arrived at Mammoth Cave Saturday morning and shoved off from Green River Ferry at around 11 a.m. It was a beautiful day, blue sky, about 75 degrees and the leaves are just starting to turn.

The Green River is nice because it's deep and you don't have worry about portaging, but the water is almost dead still in some places. If you want to go anywhere, you're going to have to paddle.

With only 13 miles to do in two days, we kicked back with some tasty beverages and just soaked up the day.

We saw lots of turtles, blue heron, ducks and a stranded dear. The fawn was stuck in the mud on a steep river bank and looked pretty sick. We thought about trying to help it out, but there was no good way to get to it and it didn't look to healthy. We decided to let nature take its course.

After about 9 miles on the water, we pulled out at Crump island and then decided to camp on the bank just across from the island because the island was pretty rocky.

We set up camp and enjoyed the afternoon and evening. I had two wisdom teeth out the day before, so my meal consisted of some chicken noodle soup, while everyone else feasted on Ribeye and T-Bone steaks :-(

We heard some owls and coyotes that night and saw another small group go by in canoes in the darkness. They were the only people we saw other than a few bass fishermen.

On Sunday, we woke up with the sun, had coffee and breakfast and packed up the site. The fog was still lifting from the water as we shoved off.

Just as we rounded the first corner we spotted a bald eagle in a tree overhaning the water . We got pretty close and snapped some pics before he took off. I has some 800 film in the camera from the night before, so my pics came out grainy. Hope someone else got some good ones. I'll post mine later.

We pulled out at Houchin's Ferry at around 9:30 a.m. and headed for breakfast at the Ohio River Overlook Restaurant at Hawesville.

It was a great relaxing trip.

When you go to a stream with stickmon, it would be advisable to take a set of skids for your boat.
