Mother of All Weekends
Once again, me and some friends are planning something crazy. We want to hike the entire Quehanna Trail in 2 days. We've done it before at a much slower pace and know the terrain is difficult, But it's worth a try. Anyone have any tips for speed and endurance or wanna join us?

sounds like fun. i'd like to try that sometime.
tips?
eat lots of food, lots of times throughout the day.
and start a couple hours before daylight. it's better to walk in the dark fresh than tired.
if you can walk 3 miles an hour and hold tha pace all day, you're in business.
just watch out for too many breaks.
btw, are you for real? or am i a victim here?

man, I thought I am pretty good, but there is no way I could do 40 miles per day! I am really curious how many actual hours it will take ya.

I did 17 miles once in 6 hours. or was it 7? I think it was 7 hours. (grayson highland)

40 miles per day?? yeeeehaawwww!!! No way...I am too old for that too!

Man, we're for real. We've done 40 miles a day with full packs on the Laurel highlands trail. We also have a lot more experience including backpacking in: Virginia, New Mexico, and New York. Hostess chocolate Pies are great. 530 calories in one small delicious pie, you can't go wrong.

Remember, the later in the year you do it, the shorter the days. When you did the LHT, it was summer and didn't get dark until 9:00, so you had 16 hours or so of daylight. Right now it is getting dark at 7:00 or so. In a month it will be dark at 4:30 and you'll have 11 hours of daylight. Much harder to do the long miles when you are stumbling in the dark.

What do you do about electrolyte depletion? I burned out Sunday and am still half sick.

Everybody Has Their Own Idea Of Hiking, I Guess
Do it while you're young, because those extreme miles won't come easy as you get older. And remember to take pictures so you can show folks what you missed seeing. And hopefully, someday, you'll come to the conclusion that hiking isn't getting from A to B...it's what's between and the quality time you spend between them that really matters.

pick a time where the moon is approaching full then night hiking is not so tough. If you have to use a light to hike with use a head lamp strapped to your leg - the angle highlights the rocks and dips in the trail better than wearing the light on your head.

Start by hiking less than 40 miles in one day!
