“Does anyone here think that backpacking gear is mostly unnecessary? To me, gear heads universally come across as elitist ding dongs with no sense of the natural world.

Give me natural fabrics, leather boots, a hickory walking staff, a burlap sack, some hemp rope, a couple wool blankets, and I'm set! I always use only flint and steel (my knife) to start fires, and I only use fire to purify water.

I out-hike nearly every gear head I come across, so the advantage of modern gear doesn't make a squirt of pi$$ worth of a difference!

And I don't pay $$$$ for dorky hi-tech gear - and as such, I'm not as hard on the environment.

There's God's way of hiking, and then there's the gearhead way of hiking. I know I'm going with God. What about you?”

from now on, i will use rocks as my TP, leaves for my insulation, and disregard all fire regulations, cooking my dinners in a coffee can hung under a wooden tripod. i feel so liberated!”
