Does anyone here think that backpacking gear is mostly unnecessary? To me, gear heads universally come across as elitist ding dongs with no sense of the natural world.

Give me natural fabrics, leather boots, a hickory walking staff, a burlap sack, some hemp rope, a couple wool blankets, and I'm set! I always use only flint and steel (my knife) to start fires, and I only use fire to purify water.

I out-hike nearly every gear head I come across, so the advantage of modern gear doesn't make a squirt of pi$$ worth of a difference!

And I don't pay $$$$ for dorky hi-tech gear - and as such, I'm not as hard on the environment.

There's God's way of hiking, and then there's the gearhead way of hiking. I know I'm going with God. What about you?

I'm going with gear, and so are you, except yours isn't as cool as mine, so I must look down on you.

Quite frankly, it's the ability of people like me, to be able to tolerate people like you, that makes this world run smoothly.

Free24, wool is every bit as good as synthetic fleece! Better even.

Troll?!?!? HAHAHAHAHA! That's the first and only line of defense used by an ignorant gear head. You're the poseur going out there in all your high tech garbage.

Hike your own hike. What matters is the enjoyment that you get out of it. Not the gear you use or don’t use.

Now BB, we shouldn't look down on the more unfortunate people out there (even if he prolly has lice and fleas). He's prolly just begging and hoping we'll throw some free gear his way.

stoopy, i have seen the light. why carry a jacket when i can cut a hole in my wool blanket and use it as a poncho? why carry a tent or a therm-a-rest when i can cut soft, fragrant switches of pine for my bower and my bed? why wear comfy shoes when i can stride along in rawhide, hobnail boots?

from now on, i will use rocks as my TP, leaves for my insulation, and disregard all fire regulations, cooking my dinners in a coffee can hung under a wooden tripod. i feel so liberated!
