We always hear "TT is not what it used to be", "there are too many off topic threads", etc., etc. So, in the spirit of research, I am conducting a dialy thread topic experiment, so we can have hard core mathimatical data to back up any arguements waged here.

The criteria is as follows:

BP Related Threads
Non-BP Related Threads

Here is the count for 9/26/03:

BP-Related: 23
Non-BP Related: 60

For Pete's sake, I love (and start) a non-bp related topic here every once in a while.... but this nearly 3:1 ratio is INSANE.

I'll bet if we axed:

we could reduce this factor to a 1:1 ratio.

BTW - no offense to those on my list, just try to understand what your non-topic posts are doing to this board. It's kinda like pollution, if ya know what I mean. Mix in a few actual bp related threads for pete's sake.

I do. I give a rats a$$ becuase many of the folks who used to frequebt this site, laugh at our antics, and hike with us, no longer come here. Why? Because of the stupid BS that takes place here from day to day. You and I contribute Chili, but to a point. We realize that this is a board to discuss backpacking related topics, and, at the same time, allows individuals to develop freindships and add personal touches to the site. But 60:23..... it's gone to far, and I can now understand whay a Buamee66 & running girl don't enhance this site as frequently as they did in the past.

There is something to be said for sanctity (this coming from the founder of the HMWH Club)

Good idea, BB. I've contributed to my share of off-topic threads, but like to think I've started a lot of worthwhile on-topic ones as well. But really I don't mind off-topic threads at all, UNLESS they're the useless political threads or the ones that tell someone they have email. I think those really just clutter up the board, and bring it down.

Why is a political thread any more useless than "45 year old cross dresser gets hit by Oscar Meyer wienermobile" or some other 8th grade level thread?
I realize I'm the new guy around here, but I thought this was a forum for backpackers to get together and "hang out" so to speak, not necessarily talk backpacking all the time. I kind of figured backpacking was just the common thread that tied us all together. Of course I'll agree that some stuff gets ridiculous, but I guess since it's about the same as it was 6 months ago when I showed up here, I don't realize what it was like back in the day.

bbs got a point, thats why i dont post every random thought that comes into my head like some ppl (you know who you are). i mean, come on, really, do you have nothing better to do than start a thread about what robert palmers death means to you. nobody was talking about him before he died why are we talking about this schmuck now?

man, i wanna go start an off-topic thread, now.

I agree stikmanwalking, with the part that this was a forum to "hang out". Do you want to hang out listening to someone tell you how often they urinate during the day, and never really contribute ANYTHING to hiking or backipacking? I don't, and niether do 2 others.

I'll go along with that sentiment.

But, like I said, I have no idea what this place was like 2 years ago. I just think it's funny that everyone wants to gripe about the political threads, but the ones about what color to paint your toenails don't even get mentioned.
I wasn't singling you out Artex, I just noticed several comments about the politics lately. Of course, if Alaska quit posting, you'd lose about 79% of your political threads right there.

I hate it when a thread that's got a good backpacking question or idea or t.r drops off the page w/in half a day because of all the junk posts, before most TTers have a chance to even see the title.

Perhaps all of the "off-topic" chatter is a reflection of the increased popularity of a site such as this.

BB- you were wrong to name individuals, Noone here should be singled out. IMO The majority of active users here DO post off-topic" and probably did in the past as well. It would be hypocritical to point fingers (and downright ungentlemanly).

I do agree with the spirit of your research BB, in that perhaps it's a wakeup call to post more efficiently, but perhaps Matt could help out and somehow refine the topics list so you could for instance, ignore entire threads from individuals, or create a more stratified topic list...
(help me out here...)

when i ignore someone, i want to really ignore someone. i DONT want to see their thread titles, and i DONT want to see "message from _______ is being ignored". i think the simplest solution would be to remove the chatter option to a separate forum so theyre not mixed with backpacking threads. because i like both, but i would like to see unrelated things unmixed.

Things haven`t changed that much......
I hung around this site a fair bit back in 98 to 2000.Seems to me back then there was alot of non-bp threads back then.We had Gentle Ben bragging about growing pot and mugging hikers in National Forests in Tennesse. We has wind dragon talking about druidism. We discussed Nigals love of motor sports, your favourite beer etc..We discussed religion, and many other things.Things really haven`t changed that much.Maybe a seperation would help. One area for serious bp talk, one for chatter andone for politics.??????
