Time to identify... “I see a bunch of posts from some new faces.... Where are the new guys from? How did you find this site? Welcome to all the new blood.” 10:13:33 PM 9/26/03 Oh,,,to keep this backpack related... “How long have you backpacked?” 10:15:02 PM 9/26/03 “Name: Peregrinus (Latin for Traveler) From: Carlisle, PA ( 20 miles west of Harrisburg) Found this site by surfing on the web. Experience: Started BPing in 1999. I have hike in VA on the AT and on the shore line in Virgina Beach (Back Bay) and I have hiked the AT from West Virginia to Harrisburg PA. The longest trip I have taken is 3 days, 4 nights. I am not an ultralite hiker and don't wish to convert to one either. I have tried that route and I found that I enjoy my experience more without going ultralite. Looking to take advantage of some hiking trips that I see go one at this site. Thank you for the warm welcome and I hope to see some of you on the trail.” 10:22:48 PM 9/26/03 “Welcome peregrinus! I look forward to meeting you.” 10:47:22 PM 9/26/03 “I just lurk here, but I'll answer yer questions. I live in northwest Alabama and I found this site while looking up some info on the Pinhoti Trail, which I'd still like to do. I chose this name because I get about 400 emails about it every day... And I've been backpacking off and on for about four years.” 11:03:14 PM 9/26/03 “Sildenafil,,,,check out the trip page on the trip to Sipsey and join us....right in your backyard.” 11:07:29 PM 9/26/03 “Hi, I'm Stick, you may have seen me post here once or twice. I don't really have a place to say I'm from. I moved around alot as a child. I've never backpacked, and didn't realize that was the focus of this forum.” 12:01:50 AM 9/27/03 “Hi I`m Paddles, I`m from Ontario ,Canada.Been backpacking since 96.I also love canoeing, you can go where packing won`t get yah!!!.Plus the canoe carries the load for yah.(definite bonus.Favourite hike Highland trail in Algonquin and Gunny`s point on the Bruce Peninsula.Favourite canoe trip The little Wakami.” 6:39:35 AM 9/27/03 “I am not an ultralite hiker and don't wish to convert to one either. Peregrinus - interesting newbie insight! paddles, Those sound like some nice canor trips, how from is Algonquin S.P. from Pennsylvania? Sildy, wellcum, Mr. Blue Little Pill. are you always UP for shagging some trail? SW... Don't I know you.. somewhere......” 7:25:25 AM 9/27/03 “hm, looks like a few didn't make here. Probably scared off by the idiots screaming "TROLL!" or offering to share a sleeping bag with them (don't you guys ever consider how spooky that could be to a female who doesn't know your sense of humor?) They may act like it's fun, but none of them ever stay....” 7:33:52 AM 9/27/03 “offering to share a sleeping bag with them What's scarier is that a small percentage of them are still hanging around and actually seem to enjoy that kind of attention.” 7:37:10 AM 9/27/03 Capn Bobo “I`d say probaly 10 to 11 hours good driving.Definitely worth it though.Though you do have some nice country yourself.” 9:00:18 AM 9/27/03 Hello I am here and not scared off. “Yet. I have already introduced myself on the topic I started the other night but I will add what I can to this topic. I am originally from Florence- Which is right on the coast of Oregon where the main sports are dune ridding and scubba-diving. I am 17 and have never backpacked but I have done some long day hikes and my longest was almost 20 miles in a day. How did I find the site? I was bored and went cruising the outdoor websites and found a link to here.” 9:02:16 AM 9/27/03 Intro “Galway boy raised in Boston. I'm 47 and I've been hiking since I was 14. I couldn't do any hikes this summer. That is how I came to this and the other forum. I get a two week vacation in October and see what I can do. I consider my self a troll until I get to do a hike with some of you.!” 9:53:21 AM 9/27/03 “Hi I'm viOliN. I'm from New Jersey and found this site when a troll posted a link on another backpacking board. I've been backpacking for 36 years. This seems like a pretty cool board and looking forward to sharing a sleeping bag with Sassafras ASAP.” 9:55:34 AM 9/27/03 “I live in Murfreesboro, TN. I've been BPing for about 15 or 16 years and just started posting here a little over 4 years ago. I'm looking foward to meeting some of you.” 10:04:23 AM 9/27/03 “newbies, oh how i love newbies....muhahahahaha! follow me into the woods...i'll look after ya” 10:06:02 AM 9/27/03 “newbies, oh how i love newbies....muhahahahaha! follow me into the woods...i'll look after ya” 10:06:06 AM 9/27/03 “Not to fan the fire at the welcome campfire. But I have tried ultralite, light sleeping bag, pepsi can stove, light backpack, tarp, lite beer (wink) .. ect. I was just not having the fun and comfort I enjoy at camp. Like the old addage goes.. your choice is simple, comfortable on the trail or in camp... My pack weighs about 35 lbs with food and water and I am pretty happy with that. I can hike 10- 14 miles a day with that weight. Thanks for the welcome and I too hope to meet some of you on some of these trips. Right now I am going for my Masters Degree in Business so I have find a way to balance that and hiking... But I need the BPing to stay sane! Peregrinus” 10:30:42 AM 9/27/03 “Do the woods start at the interstate rest stop? I'm kinda nervous about that!” 10:31:39 AM 9/27/03 Peregrinus “It just depends on your BPing style. If your thing is to hike in a little bit then hang in camp then take a few luxuries. If your thing is to do lots of miles then it's nice to have a lighter pack. Hike your on hike dude. Do what you like.” 10:44:45 AM 9/27/03 “Hey Tanglefoot, LadyHiker03 lives close to you. We visited her this summer. Beautiful place and a lovely person.” 10:46:43 AM 9/27/03 For the New people “Don't know if you know it yet but check out Phil's Photo Page. Most of the people here have their pictures on it. You can send Phil a shot of yourself and he'll put it up.” 10:53:19 AM 9/27/03 “oh oh...i dont have a photo up there....OMG I MUST BE A TROLL! :O” 10:55:09 AM 9/27/03 “I have only posted once before. Mostly I just lurk and thats good enough for me since I rarely have time to spend fooling around.” 11:53:51 AM 9/27/03 “I live in Southern California, but have not gotten out on the trails much this spring/summer/fall due to my wacky schedule as a consultant in this depressed economy. And I'm one of the few Californians who is NOT running for governor in the recall election/circus!. Have been hiking locally for over 25 years, including climbing trips in South America & to Mt. McKinley. Those trips were great fun but I've tired of all the travel and stay in the US west these days (Cascades to N. Arizona). You might say these days I eat too much, drink too much, but don't backpack enough (can you b-pack too much?).” 1:37:31 PM 9/27/03 “I'm from NW Florida. I started backpacking in 87' when I was in the BSA. Have not done much in the last few years, but I'm looking to change that. I found this site while googling for backpack information. I'm hoping to meet some new bping partners here. BTW I'll happily follow anyone into the woods.;)” 1:46:52 PM 9/27/03 Okay..so I'm late...have an excuse..went BP “Hi this is Mrs. Schufam Yeah, we jumped in uninvited a few months ago to TT. Met Sass, Birch, Q, Gonzo, Sunshine ... (we are very fortuante, they are great backpackers and great people & we appeciate their acceptance of us).. in Auguast. I began backpacking in middle school and continued thru college. I've missed it terribly (I spent my formative years on the AT mostly in GA, NC, VA, MD). Now I am city bound in Chicago. My husband decided he wanted the boys 12 & 8 to go camping...I took the oppurtuniy to push him towards backpacking...and I am so very happy. He still wont sit on the ground but w/ the Thermarest chair he is willing to go anywhere. He's a gadget kind of guy so watches your threads about gear with envy. And trust me, he want to try every contrivence you can think of (he is also the fishing person of the family). Our youngest still isn't ready for a big trip. And since hubby & I haven't planned a trip sans kids yet (although, I dream one day of tackling a trip similar to the White Mtns trip planned for next year) we are commited to making shorter trips. Next year we go to Yellowstone for backcountry camping then the Grand Tetons (not bad for us flatlanders?). I've never been W of Denver so I am very psyched & welcome your thoughts or experiences. So far we are staying flexible w/ our plans but if you have a must see...please let me know. NC, Linville area is are next small outing coming up...we are probably going to repeat it in March...think I should try to arrange a Family TT back packing trip for then???” 5:00:30 PM 9/27/03 “BTW: for those on the "it's all about the kids" trip...it is now safe to tell the car story. :-)” 5:09:49 PM 9/27/03 “Well I guess I somewhat managed sneak into TT unnoticed back in June. At lest I haven't been called a troll yet. I've been backpacking for 19 years, starting out with just one trip a year with my dad and friends. I live about 10 minutes from the southern border of the Adirondack Park so naturally they have become my playground. About three years ago I started hiking up mountains. After the first two years I only climbed two High Peaks (Dix and East Dix). Last year I have gotten a little more serious and have completed 18 as of today (hopefully 21 as of tomorrow). I discovered TT this June. I was trying to get information on the Northville - Placid Trail. A 122 mile trail cut through the heart of the Adirondacks. Since I have become a member of this community I have gone on one trip (SYAO in the Adirondacks). At the trip I met Adventurist, Mrs. Adventurist, and Pennsy.” 5:31:25 PM 9/27/03 “Salebored is a 60 year old vegetarian, libertarian that,s been BPing for 50 years.I live in a private community on the Mojave river near highway 66 where I build and sell spec. houses and windsurf on one of the two man made lakes. I build most of my gear and never carry over 25 lbs.I use a down quilt,G4,tarps,pepsi stove and lots of silk.Work has cut into my hike time this year, but that is going to change. I lurk about on this site almost every day so I can try to keep the pot strred up as much as I can.” 6:42:16 PM 9/27/03 “lol Violin, send it over by October 18th would you? Email for the address. I'm only car camping with the family, but I'll still use your sleeping bag. What have you got in the way of twenty degree models? Western Mountaineering? Feathered Friends? I bet it's fancy whatever it is! Hey Mrs Schufam! I wondered if you all were lurking. You should start a thread about yellowstone, etc. I bet you'll get loads of help.” 7:39:55 AM 9/28/03 “That’s the exact alibi I was going to use in case a former Ranger wanted to moider me.” 8:39:18 AM 9/28/03 “Welcome one and all. I hope, by now that you can identify the evil poster, Violin, (who will be banned soon), from the highest example of backpacking virtuosity, (that being the mighty Dunadan, Accumulator of Bag Nights). In conclusion; Haiku, Good. Yo-yo, Bad.” 10:50:18 AM 9/28/03 “Welcome all the new TT'ers!!!! I hope you all have a good time here! 8)” 4:26:35 PM 9/28/03
