“How should I dry my soggy down sleeping bag? It stinks too.” 1:18:40 PM 9/28/03 “I just washed and dried mine this morning in machines. Used the Warm setting on both machines. I had some nylon items included with the sleeping bag.” 2:05:46 PM 9/28/03 “Hey tea, for real pain, read my thread on washing the bags. UGH!!” 8:26:31 PM 9/28/03 Tea “I spent all last weekend washing my smelly a$$ed down bag. It's a major pain, but it sounds like ya have to do it. Lizs's thread helped me alot!” 9:26:02 PM 9/28/03 “So how did it go for you, Buddha Bear? Did you have to manually unclump the down a lot? Or what?” 9:47:33 PM 9/28/03 “Hey Try wahing it in a machine but to dry it turn it inside out and put a fan on it. Once it is dry to the touch turn it around and put a fan on it again. Once it is dry put baby powder in it. works every time. (if you have a high power fan blow it it side)” 10:47:24 PM 9/28/03 “dry up your wet down...” 10:50:29 PM 9/28/03 “That's cute Stratdewd.” 1:30:24 AM 9/29/03 “Sounds like too much trouble. I think I'll just buy a new bag. LOL!! The great thing about having no sense of smell is that smelly gear don't bother me.” 6:30:34 AM 9/29/03 “Buy synthetic.” 9:56:07 AM 9/29/03 “So Tea, How did you get it soggy, and stinky ? Is the stinky related to the soggy ? or are they 2 separate problems ?. Now that it is wet anyway, you might as well wash it to get rid of the stinky. Woolite and a little disinfectant (Pinesol or equivalent) in the bathtub seemes to be the safest way to avoid damaging baffles while washing. Baffles are internal panels sewn to the outside at one end and the inside at the other end to section the inside. Each section then has down put in so the down can move around within the section but cannot go to other sections. This is to get an even down distribution throughout the bag. To avoid damage to the baffles never lift the bag when wet. Drain the bath leaving the bag in the tub. Refill and squeeze gently to rinse, repeat. Roll the bag onto a big towel in the tub and lift the towel so the bag is always fully supported. Some rope to make a clove hitch on either end of the towel and hang like a hammock to let it drain for several hours before using the dryer on real low heat. 2 Tennis shoes put inside clean socks (Tie the sock closed) work better than tennis balls. If the bag is heavy with water weight you will rip the baffles. Now the first question, how did it get soggy ? I always get up at night, do not trust those pee bottles. Use something other than the sleeping bag to remove skunks from the tent. Do not store in the trunk of pink tercels in rainy weather. or basements.” 11:36:02 AM 9/29/03
