Maybe not gear, but it's food...
err... except in Crazy Mike's case...

Anyhoo, I see Oscar Mayer is now putting out a package of 15 slices of bacon, pre-cooked. Can be kept without refrigeration (although you should refrigerate after opening, it says, FWIW)

Just put in a skillet for 4-5 minutes, the package says.

So while I don't cook at all -- and maybe there are huge drawbacks to this I don't begin to understand as related to backpacking -- it seemed about as great as the "tuna in a package" revelation!! lol

In some *super*markets yu can get vegan-bacon that is made of soycrap and looks and tastes like bacon...and keeps much better than bacon.

Sass, you trouble-maker!!! LOL!

So, when taking this pre-cooked bacon do you re-package it into what you need for each meal? Or only take enough for the first meal? OR, is it not that picky about refrigeration?

Once the sealed bag is open it's supposed to be refridgerated. When I've taken it I share so I don't have to worry about spoilage. There's usually a few people who want to try it. I wouldn't take it if it was just me. Rancid bacon scares me.

Serious about those bacon rings! I busted out laughing in the grocery store...

The pre-cooked bacon is okay, but I'd rather have a good thick bacon, which, as bacpac pointed out, can be precooked, ... if you can cook, that is.

Lizs: recipe for cooking bacon:

Spray skillet with Pam or similar cooking spray. Heat skillet on medium high.

Lay bacon strips in skillet. Turn with tongs or fork as it cooks.

Take out of skillet and place in plate on paper towels to absorb excess grease. Pat tops of bacon with another paper towel.

Enjoy.

Addendum 1 to Geo's fine directions:

Don't try this naked.

LMAO @ lizs!!

Geo...basically what we're cooking here is a pan full of fat. is the cooking spray really necessary? hee hee! actually, maybe it is, i don't cook bacon either.

Bit's addendum is important to people who might think cooking bacon naked is smart ... a six of 'em.

I use it because the bacon fat sticks to the skillet if I don't use the spray. The spray is non-fat, so it doesn't add anything.

Doesn't stick to well seasoned cast iron.

I’ve never tried backpacking with raw bacon, but isn’t the whole purpose of salting meats to act as a preservative? Didn’t they use to ship it across the Atlantic in colonial days? What about wagon trains? Is our modern bacon too low in salt to keep without refrigeration? Could you get away with packing raw bacon in weather under say 50 degrees (assuming you wanted to carry a lot of fat just to cook it off)?
viOLin

yeah, i need to get me some cast iron. i hear non-stick pans are bad for you...release chemicals into your food, and whatnot. then again, if you're cooking bacon, it might improve it. LOL!
lyra

Yes, that was salt-cured pork. Much saltier than modern bacon every thought about being.

Have you ever had country ham? It was probably saltier than that stuff.

Well, lyra, if you come down to visit us here in the south, I will make sure to take you to one of the places that serves fat back.

It makes bacon look lean.

you can still buy slab bacon and ham at most grocery stores around here that doesn't need refrigerating.

I love the pre-cooked bacon. It's great cold but toss a few strips in a Enertia bag (if you have any) and stick the bag in boiling water for a few minutes. Yummy!

Anyone know how long it will last after the pouch has been opened?
