my bike's name is...
Gurthang...the name that was given by Turin Turumbar, to the sword Anglachel, that was made by Eol, the dark Elf, after its reforging in Nargothrond.

"Hail Gurthang! No lord or loyalty dost thou know, save the hand that wieldeth thee. From no blood wilt thou shrink."

From the last words of Túrin
Quenta Silmarillion 21 Of Túrin Turambar.

An awsome tale!

Does that mean your bike crashes

Stikmon - Thanks for the insights. I only scratched the surface in my readings.

When I worked for GM I used a LOR planner. It had Hildebrandt(sp?) Bros. pictures on the pages. It rocked. I liked their renditions and it helped form how I envisioned things.

yeah...
that was some amazing stuff. Even in "the Fellowship" Legolas was rippin off arrows faster than I could watch. and how bout that 2 arrow shot he did...now that was fun...but my favorite scene was the fight scene with Boromir and the Uraik Hai and then with Aragorn...thats what you call "slice and dice". man, when he knocked the head off...I yelled out in the Theatre. That is one of the greatest fight scenes that I have ever seen on film.

Stikmon, I would venture a bet that I can find the spelling, "Dunadan" in the LOTR. As I recall "Dunadain" is plural, no?
Besides, after being Ranger D on this site, and having sacrificed that name to defer to Ranger, I was given the name by, of all people, Radagast.
Do you see the lineage working here?

As I recall, many fairy tales were actually politcal rants in the form of hidden stories, suitable for kids.

I think I can remember from high school -- but am not sure -- isn't that also the case with LOTR?

Grimm's Fairey Tales
I bet life was pretty tough when
those stories were written. Probably where we got the description "Grim" from.

Lizs, ye shall NOT defile the canon...
with simple political analysis, if ye try, then ye shall be sent to the dark void, from whence all things came, and in the end, all things shall return...

Thanks Phil, its nice to have some credit from someone with your stature. There are some who would try and make small the efforts of JRRT. Those people just don't get it. Must be a smalltown newspaper editorial thing.

Tolkein refuted the idea that the Trilogy was inspired by what was happening with Nazi Germany and the world. However, there are just too many parallels to say that world conflict in Tolkein's time did not have an influence on his writings. I don't see them as any less ingenious, no matter where the inspiration came from. Instead of Hitler, Tolkein saw the internal combustion engine as the most evil influence in his time.

Can somebody explain the Lord of the Rings Trilogy to me in 200 words or less? What significance does it have for you, personally?

Lord of the Rings
Biz, I enjoy Lord of the Rings because it is a great fantasy story which is very well written and personally enjoyable to me. Tolkien wrote the story as an excuse to create languages (he was by profession a linguist). The short answer is that the story is about the struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. Good triumphs in the end because the least likely of the good forces comes through in a critical situation, sort of like the third string quarterback coming of the bench with his team behind by several touchdowns and leading them to an unlikely upset victory. Try reading them sometime, you might like them.

Actually, what struck me about the books - which I many many years ago - was the portrayal of the seductions of evil. Tolkein offered a powerful vision of evil as something that could exert a pull on any human being, that was attractive to us all - even the most innocent... and of good as a light that was almost impossible to extinguish in any of us.

On top of that, he connocted a damn good yarn - full of adventure, thrills and chills.

I think you hit the sword on the head. YES YES. I personally hate violence (and can rarely watch it in movies) but LOTR is seductive...Evil, beautiful (precious), cunning...

call me...
1800 I am stikmon...

I can explain it totally...but, you must surrender yourself to the tale...

It is more than what the others have said...Tolkien was out to create a "truely" british history. His belief was that the invaders of England, over the years, had interspersed and influenced their own mythological ideas onto the canvass of england. He wanted to create something new and uniquely british. And to do so, he needed to be true to past mythologies. Histories, languages, maps, names...etc...he used his interests and talents in linguistics to research and develope the Twengar and the Cirth. It is an evolotion that continues today, through many different Tolkien scholars.

I;d love to continue to educate you, but, I must get back to my final marketing Plan. seriously though...anytime you wanna talk tolkien, give me a shout. Its a subject that inhabits a large part of my life and walks with me whenever I am in the woods.

Namarie!

He was also inspired by WWI, which he fought in - and the enthusiasm with which countries prepared and waged for war. This is part of the power of LOTR, I think, that it works on many levels. I think it can be seen as story about the horrible urge towards war and domination and the hope that there could be a war.

But what I said before is the core of the significance it has for me personally.

Man, this next LOTR movie is gonna ROCK! Too bad the last part of the book will not be in the movie. That's where the Hobbits return to the Shire after the ring stuff is over and kick a$$ when they find the Shire in trouble.
The extended DVD version of The Two Towers did include the part of Merry and Pipin drinking the water that made them grow much bigger than the average hobbits. Merry and Pipin kicked some major a$$ on their return to the Shire.
