"Urban" Camping

“...since I'm out of a car as of present, I'm bicycling to city parks for overnight camping adventures. Along the Cuyahoga River is real nice. Anyone else do that likewise???”

“Go for it. Look for surbaban/exurban parks that were formed around undeveloped drainage systems. Should give you more privacy than the typical mid-town grassy park.”

“I live on a gravel road,abut three miles from the nearest town.Only eight houses in a mile and a quarter.We get six cars on our road in a day,that`s heavy traffic.I just plunk my tent in the backyard or under the maple in the side yard complete with firepit and life is good!!!.More privacy out here then in most Provincial campgrounds..”

WTF??? You live near me. MrsChili and I live so far out in the country that they pipe in daylight. Three cars passed the other night and I thought there must have been a fire somewhere. We have about 3 acres of lawn and from our backporch, we can't see anything but about 500 acres of cotton.

“When my wife and first got married we bought a house on a 3/4 acre lot with fruit trees in a small villiage of 200.We moved withina 2 years ,couldn`t handle it.Nosey neighbors, Lack of privacy...etc.. Had to move back into the country.Don`t know how you guys manage.Honestly!!!!!”

“I manage fine, Paddles. You probably get nosier neighbors in a town of 200 than I get in a city of 8 million. I think it's just the 'nature of the beast' in towns like that. Seems everyone knows what the other is doing and such...”

“We had 12 cars come down our road a few weeks ago and it was a fire!!We don`t pipe in daylight here,Taxes are too high.We make our own.”

“From the back of our house, the closest streetlight you can see is over 1/2 mile. And even at that there are only about a half dozen scattered out along a couple mile stretch of road.

No shortage of stars. It feels good to be able to see them again on a regular basis.”

“the noises of the city do not bother me. As a matter of fact, crickets give me more insomnia than sirens do. But, hey, it's all what we are used to...”

“Well its a house on a 1/4 acre (largest in the neighboorhood) but it is on a very busy intersection and I have a strip mall right behind my backyard, bleh!”

“well its a city :) was made a city a few years ago and there are a lot of people (not sure on the numbers but its in the tens of thousands i am sure) everything is paved over and it makes my eyes hurt to see it.”

“That's cool, Free. I guess to me, that would seem suburban. But again, it's all what you like and what you are used to. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, lived 9 years in Tampa and outlying parts of the Bay area, moved back to Brooklyn for a year, then took a radio job in the Pocono Mtns in Pa., lived there for 6 years, picked Maple up on the way and moved back to Brooklyn and now heading to Staten Island. That's the history of this tree in an utshell. If you don't believe me, you can cut me open and count the rings!”

“...I do have both a job and place to live, thankyou. I'm talking about camping FOR recreation, not out of nesessity. I never make fun of people less fortunate than myself. I always ask myself how I would feel IF I were in that horrible position and people made "light" of my situation. That's just plain wrong.

Chili, it must be great living out in rural Arkansas! My uncle lived "out" in the country when we were teenagers back in the early "80's. We had bonfires every night and we had a blast! I never forgot that!”

Fall is one great season to go camping! I hate the heat and humidity of the Summer months. Now I actually can USE my sleeping bag, if you get my point. And by the way, it always performs wonderfully! I can't find no fault with Hollofil II!”

“Spent 4 years in the Gary area supplying chemicals to steel mills. That post-apocalyptic landscape really makes one appreciate unspoilt areas, that's for sure.”

“I live in the Catskills & presently have to drive 10+ miles for a handystop, fast food or a supermarket. However they are presently building (what I believe to be) a handy stop aprx 3mi away. I sold a 35 acre lot in a nearby town & wish I kept it. I only have 2 secluded acres now, a bigger home & it's 40 minutes closer to work. Cheaper taxes. Of course being adjacent to the Catskill Mtns is a plus.”
