Watched the "Morotcycle Diaries" Saturday. It was really good. I had no idea what I was watching. I just thought it was a story about a road trip, in our era. Very good but I'll warn you, there are subtitles and it's long.

Finally saw Panic Room. Not too thrilled, maybe a 2.5 out of 5.

I watched the Day after Tomorrow, Saturday night - that was a terrible movie, kind of along the lines of AvP but not quite as bad.

watchd "american splendor" the other day. what a sweet little movie. defineite geek chic. if you liked "ghost world", youll like this movie. i liked how they blended the real harvey pekar and friends with the actors portraying them. john wayne doesnt come in and save everyone from the commies, there are no giant asteroids hurtling to earth, and nobody is killed by a roundhouse kick to the head, and its still a great movie

I have several of the American Splendor comics. The movie was quite good in intergrating the comic stories into a 'real life' movie. Enjoyed it a lot.

Saw Sideways this weekend. Kinda slow to get into but once in, laughed my a$$ off.
Great movie!

if anybody is familiar with the comic book series "strangers in paradise", paul giamatti would be the ideal actor to play francines schmuck boyfriend (whose name i cant think of at the moment)

closer: unrealistic in that everyone was brutally honest about their emotions. very downbeat movie. natalie portman has a nice butt, tho. worth it if you like serious, introspective talky pieces, but dont look for uplifting. as a matter of fact, dont watch it with a loaded gun in the house. very fine acting, especially clive owen. he plays a seething prick to perfection.

Sideways is not a comedy per say, but there are some very funny parts to it. It's a slice of life out of this guys days before he gets married. It's a drama, it's a comedy, it's just life with everything in it.

I recommend it!

rented Friday Night Lights and Ocean's twelve last night.

Oceans 12 I didn't really understand... I watched it once through and tried to watch it again to catch what I missed, but I couldn't make it through the second time, maybe I'm just slow, but I liked the first one much better.

and Friday Night Lights didn't hold my attention at all, I expected more from it. Just another football movie as far as I could tell, not much plot besides the game, some good field footage, but I couldn't stand how the "announcing" for the game happened exactly as the action did, I've watched enough games in my life to know that the announcers have to see the action before they can announceh what happened. The ending is the only thing that made it a decent movie...

What I got from Friday Nights Lights was how big High School Football is in small towns.
If you won the championship you would always be a winner in that town. If you lost...

I've known that High School Football, not college, not pro, is a big deal in small towns, but I hope it's not really THAT important.

just saw finding neverland. ive seen all of the movies nominated for best picture, except for aviator, and i liked neverland the best, but im biased towards fantasy and imagination pictures. i guess thats only fair as the academy is biased against fantasy and imagination. how else does one explain annie hall beating star wars for best picture and fight club not even being nominated?

I watched Sideways the other day as well. And I couldn't help but think of Stikmon in the Paul Giamatti character. It was totally him. :D

Oh, yeah. I laughed my butt off for most of it.

I've not seen Friday Night Lights, but I did grow up in a small Midwestern town that definitely placed the highest importance on the high school football and basketball teams/seasons. The year our b-ball team took state in '83 is (no lie here) still talked about. Absolutely nothing was more important to the townspeople than the high school sports.

im torn about spanglish. i think i might enjoy it, but there are so many other movies out there i want to see more. i generally hate adam sandler films, not so much for him, i just think he picks bad movies (see little nicky and 12 crazy nights if you think im wrong)

small town sports
Ruby.... what town did you grow up in? I grew up in Anderson, Indiana. It wasn't really classified as a "small town" but living in California now, it would fit into one by my criteria. High School Basketball was everything.

I watched Swimming Pool last night. I'm not even sure what the movie was about, I think the whole thing was just an excuse to show off Ludivine Sagnier's body, and believe me that was worth the whole thing. Some of it was bordering on porn, ahhh... see for yourself

I watched Lemoni Snicket, Blade Trinity and The Hebrew Hammer this weekend.

Lemoni Snicket was good. I like these kind of dark gothic types of movies. Jim Carry has grown too predictable for me I think. The little baby was the funniest part.

Blade- Old worn out storyline but still a great ride.

Hebrew Hammer- This was hilarious. It’s a parody of the black cop exploitation movies like Shaft only it’s an orthodox Jew as the baddass cop. It was very campy. I don’t think there was a single stereotype they didn’t hit in this movie. Like when Hammer’s breaking into the enemy’s evil headquarters they had a Jew detector alarm and all he had to do was not act Jewish to slip in. He saw a penny on the floor and said, “Hey, a penny.” and picked it up setting off the alarm.

And I'm sad to say that I watched the last DVD available for Curb Your Enthusiasm. What am I going to do now?

local rental place has good thing going: all rentals are 7-day rentals, rent 3 and 4th one is free, every movie returned by midnite the following day is good for a 1 dollar credit. so i usually get 4 when i go.

rented lemony snickets asoue, anchorman: the legend of ron burgundy, the hebrew hammer, and birth

lemony snickets was darker than what i expected (alot of implied violence towards children), still good. wouldve been better if it was longer so the plot couldve come together better. jim carrey makes an excellent villain and the character is perfect for his usual hammy acting. emily browning (violet)is a beautiful young woman. she is going to be turning heads in hollywood in a few years. yes, the baby was hilarious ("shes the mayor of crazytown")

anchorman was fricking hilarious. christina applegate, however was the star. she was by far the most skilled comedic actor on the set. but shell never be a superstar cuz she doesnt play ridiculous characters.
however, despite being one of the best movies ive seen in awhile, it had the worst commentary. they talked about everything but the movie. if youre interested in random stream-of-consciousness babbling of hollywood b-listers, listen to the commentary. if not, your time is better spent going on to the next movie. also, if you want to read the pointless random babble of a frustrated english major with an unfulfilling day job, continue reading my posts. thank you.

looking forward to hebrew hammer and birth. im betting hh is very funny, dont have a clue about birth. its got a weird premise. i like weird. it better not suck

Hebrew Hammer is funny, but you have to be reasonably conversant with Jewishness to get a lot of the jokes. My wife and I watched a little of it once, and she thought it was hilarious, but I had to explain some of the humor to her.

I loved his "Jew Canoe" Caddy. there was so much funny stuff in that movie. Surprisingly the funniest thing in the whole movie was the subway sign that read "The Chood". The origanal short where he goes in and shoots up a Jews for Jesus center was hillarious too.

One Thumb Down
Saw 'Closer' last night.

One of the more depressing movies I've seem in a while.
Julia Roberts needs to fire the people that got her into this, she looks old and does not compare well with the much younger Natalie Portman.
This is one of the few adult roles I have seen Natalie in. Her 'acting' in this one stunk.
Speaking of adult roles, she plays a stripper, and can be seen in a very small g string in this movie, lots of 'bunage', still not enough to save this chunker of a movie.
None of the charactors are likeable and all are unhappy at the end, as was I.
