Best DVD Rentals

One night I was watching TV, and Turner Classic Movies was showing "Forbidden Planet", while on Sci-Fi Channel they were showing one of their original "sci-fi" movies which was some detective story with a psychic woman as the protagonist or some such crap.

“The Day After--
I saw about 3 minutes of it (towards the end of the film) at my my friends' house.) it was enough for me not to bother to rent it. (unfortunately for her, she bought it sight unseen...)

The 2 lead actors popped out of their snow-bound tents BAREHANDED-- put their hands in the snow and then stand up. Their hats aren't even snugly buttoned or anything... in fact the guy who stood up-- his hands were DRY.....

Okay, that's realistic..... NOT!!!
Isn't this supposed to be about the worst storm ever over NYC? I mean-- it was supposed to have so much snow that the Empire State bldg starts to frost up visibly and the Statue of Liberty is buried?

AND... you would get out of a tent without gloves and not be screaming in pain?

I'd rather eat dirt than watch this movie....

I love watching shows on dvd. My wife and I got into Kingdom Hospital but they moved it around so much we didn't get to the see the last half of the series. We watched the whole season in one weekend. And I HAD to own Dave Chapelle's first season. Classic. One of the best shows I've watched on dvd though is Dead Like Me Season 1.”

And that's the reason we dropped Blockbuster and started with Wal-Mart's DVD rental service (they really need a catchy name like Netflix). I figure I'm paying about the same as I used to in rental/late fees, but no hassles. Check it out, or one of the competitors.”

It's okay if you like to watch LOTS of movies (or if you're late all of the time!)

Problem is that if you dont' watch a lot of movies (1-5 movies a month) then you are paying more per movie.... you might as well buy 'em if you don't rent a lot!...

“I do actually watch the cable channels I get. Movies these days are pumped out so fast, most main stream movies don't have a lot of thought put into them. Lot's of times when I rent the "hot new release" I return it after only watching the first 10 minutes or half hour. Plus, they'll all be on TV someday...

“I like watching the PBS stations-- at least you learn something! I watch some other sitcoms and series, but usually, I have other things to do with my time... :-) working on artwork, spending time with Thinkbubelz or my friends, posting on TT..... LOL....

You're right though-- a lot of the new releases are pretty bad! That's why I usually wait for the DVD to come out, too....

At least when you go to the movie theatre, it's more about going to dinner and hanging with your friends and eatting the movie popcorn vs. just watching the movie. :-)”

“You're right there...I'm not a movie theatre going person, but a few years ago a friend talked me into going to the local movie house that shows independent/foreign films. We usually have dinner/drinks as well...we've seen some good stuff and some strange stuff, but always interesting...

“No dayhiker...this is the real deal. The stores in Chinatowns of any major cities, will probably have it (Hero). "Hero"'s been out earlier in China and Hong Kong.

Similar to alot of Jackie Chan movies...when we get to see some of his movies in the cinema....it's already 5 or 6 years old...and usually some stores carry the DVD.”

“i thought it was a bit over-rated but i still liked it for the performances of the lead actors. murray and johannsen (sp?) had remarkable chemistry. i think, as american audiences, we're too used to a movie having to have big action and/or major revelations, so if there isnt a 180 degree turnaround in someones character, then its perceived as no character development. the character development was there, but it was more of a nudge in a slightly different direction than life-shattering events causing a sharp turn. the tension was sharpened by real-world things that we take for granted in the movies: will they or wont they consummate their feelings? in the movies, the two characters jump into bed by the second act or earlier, but in real life, its not always like that

i just picked up fellowship of the ring extended edition from the library. sweet! anyone interested in science, especially astrophysics, should check out the nova miniseries the elegant universe. its a mindblowing presentation of string theory for us mathematic non-super-geniuses. saved! is a good teen comedy set in a christian high school. i love the library!”

Dayhiker I like HP3 more than the other two movies much the same I don't see how they can capture all that happens in books 4 and 5 in film.
